The focus of the project is social-emotional learning at home for children aged 0 to 6. Less verbal communication in families negatively impacts academic performance, healthy relationships, and mental wellness.  Early family relationships are essential for children’s social and emotional learning (SEL). The partnership will promote SEL to families with preschool children by motivating them to share family stories through innovative playful digital and non-digital tools. The mission is to empower children to experience higher levels of self-awareness, interpersonal skills, self-management, social awareness, and empathy.

The new solution includes digital and non-digital tools, community and family outreach, SEL expertise, and advocacy for SEL policies that will transform and impact the well-being and holistic development of children aged 0-6. The team has strong evidence that the approach will work in the context described and has solid and proven mechanisms for learning and assessment in place.

Families are children’s first teachers and are essential to promoting social and emotional learning (SEL). Billings, Montana – Most local residents can recall the storm damage in Billings that happened in 2019. There was hail the size of baseballs plummeting through roofs, siding, and gutters. We had broken glass everywhere, and all our homes and vehicles were a mess. The cars got dented and beaten up, and the streets were flooded with debris. Some of the trees were pulled out from their roots and standing trees stood leafless like a Charlie Brown tree.

Storm season is here no matter what part of the country you live in. Somewhere in the US, we always get hail or a storm causing damage this time of year. We all need to be cautious and have a plan to stay safe. Our valuables will get damaged and can be replaced, but everyone needs a good plan for their safety and to take cover when disaster strikes.

One of our exterior repair customers in Billings, remembers clearly what happened on that horrific day. They were sitting down as a family watching TV when suddenly, a loud pounding was on their roof. The young children and their family dog were terrified, crying and trying to seek cover. The storm felt like it was going to last forever with everyone’s emotions flowing high. When the storm was over they went into their yard and picked up the children’s toys, the plastic dog house, and the neighbors’ shingles off the lawn. For the most part, their house was intact except for some broken windows, a few shingles missing from their roof and dented siding. At least, that was the only noticeable thing they could see. Not knowing what to do, they called the insurance company to file a claim.

To recap; The American Dental Association’s National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards (NCRDSCB) announced in March of 2020 the dental field of Orofacial Pain (OFP). At that time, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) wrote how this was recognized as the newest dental specialty to help patients with related facial pain conditions.

The AAOP defines OFP as “the specialty of dentistry that encompasses the diagnosis, management, and treatment of pain disorders of the jaw, mouth, face, and associated regions.”

Approximately 400 attended this 46th Scientific Meeting, including several global participants.

Dr. Jeff Okeson, founder of the University of Kentucky’s Orofacial Pain Program, was the keynote speaker. With orofacial pain being a new specialty, he summarized this 40 year journey: challenges, letdowns, and finally recognition of the specialty. Okeson highlighted James Fricton, DDS MS of the MN Head & Neck Pain Clinic as a driving force of persistence to attain this. 

“It was nice to see Dr. Paul Durham, Missouri State University Center director for Biomedical and Life Sciences, share research on the importance of how proper nutrition and a healthy digestive system supports a healthy nervous system. His research shows this bidirectional relationship as he discussed the importance of a balanced diet to support both the cells in our gut and the bacteria residing there. He showed how chronic unmanaged stress and anxiety, and poor dietary choices have a negative effect on both the digestive and nervous systems. Dr. Durham’s research supports what we’ve seen in clinical practice and gives credence to the holistic “mind-body” philosophy we’ve incorporated for 40 years at MHNPC – using integrated multidisciplinary treatment.” – Dr. Cory Herman

The field of Orofacial Pain continues to grow. Yet, the numbers are startling with escalating needs for access to care for chronic pain treatment and only approximately 400 board certified orofacial pain specialists attending.

It’s recognized that for most complex pain conditions only a specialist can best serve patient needs. This is also true for people suffering from orofacial pain symptoms; and yet broadly, consumers don’t know about the specialty. Physicians currently often send patients to ear/nose/throat doctors as that aligns with the information they are familiar with. The AAOP’s work helps more dentists become aware of OFP and to send referrals for related facial pain conditions.

The Abop.net, the governing specialty board, provides a directory of Certified Orofacial Pain Specialist by state. Minnesota lists 19 individuals but no Certified Orofacial Pain Specialist is listed in either North or South Dakota!

“Management of the Symptomatic TMJ Post-Surgical Patient”, “Dry Needling and Pain Neuroscience Education in Orofacial Pain”, and “Clinical Insights for The Treatment Planning of The Patient with TMD and Orofacial” sessions discussed creating positive change for TMD/Orofacial Pain patients.
