“What is perhaps the greatest threat to a leader’s decisiveness is decision paralysis, or the inability to make any decision due to fear of the residual effects,” Deepak “Dee” Agarwal points out. “To overcome decision paralysis and propel decisiveness, leaders must leverage and lean into the power of critical thinking, emotional intelligence, time management, and data gathering.” 

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is the ability to objectively analyze and evaluate a situation, issue, or problem in order to reach a decision. It requires going beyond the face-value facts and truly understanding short and long-term implications, motives of various parties, and impacts on people, places, and processes.

“Great leaders practice critical thinking by evaluating pros and cons, looking at an issue from different angles, taking in differing perspectives, and weighing the outcomes of various decisions before acting,” Dee Agarwal says.

Critical thinking requires an ample amount of logic and visualization techniques, and in a company or team setting, identifying, analyzing and solving problems systematically can help leaders determine and set realistic and achievable organizational goals. Visualization techniques are a tool for critical thinking that helps to move the problem or situation out of the mind of the decision-maker and present it in a formatted and digestible way. One visualization technique is argument mapping, which brings information into a visual format, providing a logical structure outlining the reasoning, evidence, and solutions. 

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence, or the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions, is an often overlooked skill that is pivotal to a leader’s decision-making and ultimately, success. The ability of leaders to be aware of and gain control of their emotions is paramount in making decisions. This is especially true in emotionally charged situations, where the outcome of the decision-making process may profoundly impact many. Mastering emotions to benefit decision-making for an organization can be practiced by exercising active listening and empathy.

“Emotions can cloud our ability to make good decisions. This is why learning to take control of one’s emotions can help leaders make decisions that benefit the whole rather than a select few in the short term,” Deepak Agarwal explains. 

Additionally, it’s important to take into consideration how emotions drive others’ actions when assessing a situation. People are emotional creatures, and how they  feel often dictates their  behaviors. By developing emotional intelligence, leaders can be better equipped to read through the lines and gain a deeper understanding of the context in which the situation is occurring, leading to more informed decision-making.

Time Management

Decisive leaders are masters of time management. Time is the equivalent of gold, and wasting it in fruitless decision-making is what separates great leaders from those they lead. In an organizational setting, strong leaders use time as a tool to push the decision process along, collecting the information needed to properly analyze and support critical thinking on the scenario. Leaders must be aware of the broader timeline of their organization, and how this decision will not only impact future plans but how it will be perceived in the context of other recent notable events or decisions that have altered the business.  

“Failing to make a decision is a decision not to act. Leaders need to balance the timeline in which the decision will be most impactful while taking the time to thoroughly walk through the decision-making process,” Deepak Agarwal says.

Data Gathering

Research is another essential step involved in decision-making, allowing business leaders to gather details about key business areas from internal and external sources. For example, if the organization is planning to make an operational shift such as implementing a new CRM (Customer Relationship Management) platform, it would be beneficial for leadership not only to assess case studies from other companies that have transitioned to a new system but also conduct internal research by surveying employees for the feedback on the current system.  

“Gathering data both internally and externally prior to making decisions is good practice. In workplaces, it leads to formulating better policies and helps leaders chart the direction of the organization and income-generating activities,” Dee Agarwal says.

With so many factors affecting the decisiveness of leaders, they must learn how to harness important leadership skills that aid decision-making to best make choices that benefit their organizations as a whole.

The Founder of Price Law Firm, APC, of Redlands, revealed the importance of estate planning for a couple, especially if one partner is suspected of having or has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

“In my experience, the couple should have a well thought out and professionally drafted plan built around a living trust,” he said. “The healthy spouse will then have powers of attorney to ensure correct financial and healthcare decisions are taken for their loved one.”

While the ideal time to plan is before any illness is diagnosed, a living trust can still be prepared if their spouse has dementia. 

Mr Price said: “Many assets can be placed in this trust, allowing the healthy spouse to take control of assets and keep everything functioning normally. This means that as the spouse with dementia declines, they will not be taken advantage of or misappropriate assets.”

As dementia renders sufferers unable to understand financial documents and their assets or even recognize family members, a living trust is an excellent counterpoint to help their spouse manage their existing environment.

Mr Price added that living trusts also allow room for further planning. “If the healthy spouse falls ill or passes away, with a trust, a successor trustee can be appointed to take over the trust’s management.”

While a living trust is highly recommended, he said that if one has not been put in place, then an update of your will, powers of attorney and healthcare directives is essential. 

He said: “A will that reflects your most recent wishes ensures your assets land in the right hands. If you don’t have a will, the state will decide what happens to your assets after death.’’

“A financial power of attorney and advanced healthcare directives allow you to choose a person to make financial and medical decisions for you when you can no longer do so for yourself.”

Mr Price concluded: “If there is a spouse with dementia who could fall prey to predatory behavior, this can be avoided with an irrevocable trust. This will protect your spouse while they’re ill and their assets after you both have passed on.”

In a recent interview, the founder of The Elderlaw Firm, in Greensboro, NC, explained: “Probate through the courts is required to authenticate a last will and testament after someone has passed away.”

If you’re nominated as executor in a will, there are several steps to complete the process through the courts.

The first is to file a petition to open probate of the estate in question. “In North Carolina you’ll need to file the will with the probate court and file the petition as soon as you can after that person has died,” said Toman. “There is a form for doing this but it can be confusing to use. The Court is not allowed to provide anything more than basic instructions, and so it is a good idea to get help to get everything off to a good start.”

Early in the process, an executor must locate and take possession of the deceased’s assets so they can be protected throughout probate. 

Toman added: “Generally assets are not listed in a will. That’s why it is so important to work with an estate planning lawyer who helps get an asset listing in place during lifetime. In other situations, the executor must find hidden assets by combing through tax forms, insurance policies, and bank statements.”

When the deceased had outstanding debt, the executor must identify and contact the deceased’s creditors. “You must notify creditors of the person’s death. Additionally, in most states, the executor must publish a notice in a local newspaper to notify potential and unknown creditors,” he added.

Following this, an executor uses estate funds to pay for the deceased’s bills and debts and prepare and file tax returns for the year the decedent passed away. Toman said: “After these steps, the executor will need to petition the court to approve all bill payments and distributions or remaining assets to beneficiaries specified in the will.”

He advised executors to retain an experienced probate attorney’s guidance for a comprehensive checklist to complete the process.

Newborn spoke out after a team of University of Arizona experts in artificial intelligence, law and computer science came together to build software to create and execute wills easier. The project is being funded with $750,000 from the National Science Foundation’s Designing Accountable Software Systems program.

“Rather than let a computer reduce a will to software and algorithms, anyone can seek professional Estate Planning advice from an attorney skilled in that sector. They offer the advice and experience that a computer cannot.”

Creating a robust, regularly updated Estate Plan, with the aid of a skilled attorney, supported by documents and with clear guidelines on who the executor is, the beneficiaries and allocation of assets can offer exceptional peace of mind in the long run – without the need for a computer’s help.

He added that one of the University’s premises for the project in counteracting an attorney’s fees – one of the supposed barriers to making a Will – “didn’t make sense”. 

Newborn emphasized: “If someone doesn’t have the financial resources to hire an attorney for a simple Will, then perhaps use of an artificial intelligence program can be effective, because in that situation there likely aren’t a lot of assets to distribute to someone’s heirs and so there are less things to consider in creating someone’s estate plan.”  

“However, if someone has enough money and assets, such as cars, real estate, investments, and/or jewelry that they want to distribute to beneficiaries after they die, then that person likely has the resources to pay a lawyer to draft an effective and robust estate plan.”

He added: “A qualified Estate Planning attorney will ensure that all the angles of your estate are covered, can cast an expert eye over your plans and suggest improvements that could make the whole process more efficient – and less stressful for your grieving relatives.”

Spalding University Preparing Students to Make Social Changes

According to the Harvard Youth Poll, females are now 67% scared about America, up from 57% hopeful in the spring of 2021. This represents a significant shift in just one year. Males shifted from 56% hopeful to 58% apprehensive within the same time period.

Social justice and helping facilitate social changes is a growing aspiration for the youth of the country, born mostly out of increased anxiety and tension about the culture around them.

According to the Harvard Youth Poll, females have gone from 57% hopeful about America in the spring of 2021 to 67% fearful about America this year. This is a dramatic shift over the course of just one year. Males also flipped during the same timeframe from 56% hopeful to 58% fearful.

A poll by Blue Shield of California of youth across the US has had racism and social justice the most common concern for the past two years. The next highest issues of concern were jobs and the economy, the environment and climate change, and education.

With so many areas of concern, there are also a lot of opportunities for making social change. But, it is difficult to envision a way of actually making a difference – especially in a way that is part of a career instead of just volunteering.

One such path is with a career in social work – and especially with the specific training provided at the graduate level that can be focused on leadership and practices that can lead to social change.

Along with providing direct services and making an impact, a social worker is connected to a community and can be an advocate for populations of people through political lobbying or participation in local government affairs.

Spalding University offers this type of difference making training with their Master of Social Work program and recently expanded to offer the degree program online. Students with a Bachelor of Social Work degree can complete the program in eight months full-time or sixteen months part-time. Students with a different Bachelor’s degree can finish the graduate program in 16 months full-time or 32 months part-time.

The programs from Spalding University are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and the Southern Association of Colleges of Schools Commission on Colleges.
