Jackie Zoeller, owner and chief photographer of Denver Headshot Co, always wondered why that was. What makes an objectively good photo bad? Denver Headshots has discovered something unexpected as the result of an internal experiment, and it’s been powering a surge in customer satisfaction.

Armed with her camera and remote control, Zoeller started tackling a question many people have, including herself. ‘Why don’t I like my own photographs?’ Despite preaching the value of a photo for many years, Zoeller struggled to get a photo that she felt confident in. According to her, she never knew what other people were thinking about this photo, and all she could focus on was her physical appearance. “Not liking my hair or my smile, …was that shirt the right one to wear?“ she said, expressing a former spiral of doubt.

Trying several different smiles, poses, and outfits, she took numerous photos, and despite misgivings, she was still able to objectively determine the good photos among them and took them to her staff. What happened next, she couldn’t have expected.

Photos that were not loved by the person being photographed gave a whole different impression to someone else. Where Zoeller saw what she didn’t like about the photo, a subordinate saw something completely different. Where Zoeller saw just herself, a coworker perceived confidence, approachability, and warmth, in one photo, and saw fun, amiability, and cheer in another. The resulting talk and discovery led to recognition; it’s incredibly difficult to be objective about something personal like a portrait, or in this case, self-portrait. Most everyone is faced with subjective feelings about their own photographs and seldom look for other perspectives.

Any person is liable to look at an image of themself, and be critical and subjective. They often are blinded only by flaws, flaws that may only exist in their mind. We all know someone who doesn’t like something about themselves, but it turns out that extends into their opinion of photos too. And that led Jackie Zoeller and her team to try something new in customer sessions.

Knowing that people go into photography sessions expecting to not like the outcome, a new process was introduced that led to big results. It’s no longer just about the light, outfit, and background, or even the pose. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. More than ten million Americans are symptom-less carriers of the defective CF gene. Sixty years ago, children with CF usually did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, because of foundation-supported research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is about 40. This is remarkable progress, but it’s not enough and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation continues to fund raise for more research as precious lives are lost to CF every day.

The Founder of Laus Consulting Services LLC in Orlando took time out from her busy schedule to dispel several myths about accountants and how these wrongly held assumptions could be holding back the potential of a business.

Ho said that one widely held myth in the business community was that accountants were only ever commissioned to deal with taxes. “Taxes are not the be-all and end-all of an accountant. They have a number of responsibilities to fulfill in a business from auditing to payroll issues, business planning, and keeping an owner abreast of changing financial regulations.”

Another misconception is that accountants aren’t relevant or essential to a small business owner. Yet that couldn’t be further from the truth as they are often influential or pivotal in a business’s future success.

“That myth may contribute to business owners believing they can handle the financial side of the business themselves. But it can take them away from the very thing of running the business,” Ho commented.

“Business owners often find that they can do much more, and their company is much better run with an accountant on board. Accountants have the knowledge and training to address tax and other financial issues and provide business owners with vital information on their business performance.”

Ho said accountants could often ‘see’ where financial problems may lie in a failing business and can review expenses and overheads to provide owners with a better insight into their company’s performance and cost management.

Another commonly-held but misleading claim is that small businesses don’t need an accountant as it is an added expense. Often hiring an accountant is the best thing that could happen to a business, and the cost of one is outweighed by the expertise they bring in guiding a company to a more significant turnover.

“An accountant can often guide a business owner on budget projection, collecting invoices, project accounting, expense analysis, helping to improve the financial health of a business.”

Another misconception is that accounting is nothing more than bookkeeping, bookkeeping is keeping a record of revenue and expenses and is just one critical element of accounting. However, accountancy is analyzing financial data, understanding the bookkeeping element, and projecting what those finances will look like.

Ho concluded: “Rather than believe the myths and struggle alone, business owners should seek out accountants and find out what they can do. They may be surprised to learn that accountants can do far more good for a business than an owner may give them credit for.”
