Gary has been an active member of the TXCPA (both the local chapter & state organization) since 1997 and continues to be recognized for his outstanding accomplishments within the CPA community. In 2020, he received two acclaimed awards, the TXCPA–Fort Worth – CPA of the Year Award and the state TXCPA Outstanding Committee Chairman Award Business & Industry (B&I) Issues.

Gary is the current Vice President, previously serving as treasurer and committee chair of the Business & Industry Committee. He is also on the Board of Directors for the state Texas Society of CPAs and is former state committee chair for the B&I committee. 

Gary graduated from Texas A&M in 1992 with a degree in accounting. In 2005, he completed his Executive MBA from TCU at the Neeley School of Business. He began his career in January 1993 at a local Fort Worth accounting firm as an accounting generalist. He loved the partners and the ethics of a CPA firm, but in his free time explored his growing interest in technology. In the early 90’s, servers, and the idea of “networking” the computers together, was just beginning to be recognized as a business essential. Outsourcing the technical aspects to a computer company, the partners became frustrated when “Frick and Frack” (as the partners called the technicians) always said “Oh, the gremlins gotcha” to any computer issue.

This was NOT how a CPA firm treated its clients. And Gary had seen enough, watching “Frick and Frack” hold his firm’s productivity captive. Because he now had some computer expertise, he jumped at the chance to go after these “gremlins.” 

 “I had read about computers while trying to get my new home PC to play a game called Wing Commander and I discovered how much I loved learning about technology. I decided to become an expert in systems and networks. Before long, the partners replaced Frick and Frack, telling me to get rid of the gremlins once and for all,” remarked Gary.  

With that, Gary left accounting work behind. He’d reached his goal of becoming a CPA, but now discovered a dream to integrate the business acumen and integrity of the CPA profession with technology management. He was reassigned to oversee the accounting firm’s computers and network. Realizing their clients needed help too, the savvy partners put him in charge of a new technology services group, with full Profit & Loss responsibilities. 

But after five years, Gary felt a new calling: 

“I wanted my own company but wasn’t sure how to make the transition. My wife and I were backpacking the Maroon Bells 26-mile loop outside Aspen, Colorado. After a very steep ascension on the first day, we awoke alongside a crystal-clear lake… That’s when I told my wife I’d decided to start my own business. She was totally on board. And after getting the partners’ blessing to leave, the adventure began.”  

Gary left the firm to form TriQuest Technologies with the goal of creating a professional services firm that would consistently deliver reliable IT and high-quality technical services within an environment of trust and support– so, even if it came time to separate, both team members and customers would be better off than before TriQuest. On October 13, 2023, TriQuest Technologies celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Gary has a unique ability to understand and relate to business executives as a CPA, an MBA, a Technology Network Architect, and a business owner. He understands business strategy, business financials, AND technology. Gary enjoys working with business executives, specifically CFOs and Controllers, who oversee their company’s IT because they want technology to work, and CFOs understand why technology should work as a resource rather than a hurdle or strictly a cost-center.
