Wooden slatted walls and acoustic timber specialist BCL Timber has officially commenced work on a new external PEFC Thermowood cladding installation at Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre. 

A Modern Design For A Modern Facility 

The Edenbridge Memorial Health Centre is set to bring seamless healthcare access to the residents of Edenbridge by delivering a number of health services under one roof. BCL Timber has been tasked with designing, developing, and delivering the external timber cladding to deliver a beautiful prefabricated panel system solution for the town’s newest facility. 

Having kickstarted the project in 2022, the Memorial Health Centre is approaching its final stages of development and remains on track to open in late autumn as expected. 

Following strategic planning and design phases, the award-winning BCL team are now onsite at the new Edenbridge Medical Centre in Kent, installing 1,000m2 of external timber cladding panels in a full external envelope solution, including all membranes, insulation and fire barriers, for main contractor Galliford Try. 

Areas of the building will shortly be clad in PEFC Thermowood (European Redwood or Scandinavian Pine which has been heat-treated to increase durability to ‘Class 2’ in accordance with BS EN 350-2:1994). The wood cladding panels have been designed and pre-fabricated at the company’s factory in Berkshire and are now being installed using secret-rear fixings to all timber slatted panels, removing face fixings allowing the timber to age better and any refurb coatings, last longer. 

Once the wood cladding has been installed, the centre will provide 2,180 square metres of clinical and community space including a GP practice, outpatient services, minor injury unit, x-ray services, and more. The facility’s partners are Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust, Edenbridge Medical Practice and Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group. 

BCL Timber’s cladding panels and external wood soffits include typically around 15% recycled material & 70% organic – while they simultaneously offer significantly lower embedded carbon than other MDF, composite or veneered panels. They are additionally free of surface weaknesses for increased durability, resulting in stunning aesthetics that are set to last. 

The tailored solution will provide an aesthetically pleasing, fully tested and certified, financially effective solution, thus making it the perfect match for the Edenbridge Medical Centre’s requirements and its partners.

Recently, more than 20’000 South Africans have graduated from an impactful Skills Development program called Tools for Life delivered by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers for free; they do this to empower communities for a flourishing and prosperous South Africa.

An exceptional 20’000 South Africans have graduated from a skills development program called Tools for Life delivered by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers for free in order to empower communities for sustainable livelihoods. All wanting to improve their own lives, thousands of South Africans from all sectors of society across the country have been attending the well-known ‘Tools for Life’ workshops by the dozens all in an effort to create a better South Africa with new practical tools they got from the Scientology Volunteer Ministers.

The beneficiaries of the program come from all backgrounds: unemployed graduates, youth, elderly, educators from all levels, government officials, municipal leaders, community developers, early childhood practitioners, university professors, business leaders, pastors, social workers, nurses, police officers and agri-preneurs from all over South Africa- all of them were trained very hard to learn these very effective and practical skills. Those skills included how to resolve conflicts, poverty alleviation, youth empowerment, tackling learning barriers, improving the quality of education, communication, business ethics, improving self-confidence, how to achieve goals, successful relations, public relations, financial ethics, overcoming drug abuse and many more needed to be successful in improving the current conditions that plague our country. 

Noticing the devastating impact of Covid-19 on the country, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers decided to contribute in rebuilding South Africa by empowering individuals with practical life skills they can use to rebuild their lives and the country. “This program has produced a breed of South Africans who are go-getters and equipped to make life happen,” said Sandile Hlayisi, Chairperson of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who conducted a majority of these training sessions. 

With over 20’000 trained, the testimonials flood in daily giving a picture of the successes achieved by the graduates as they implement these tools in their daily lives. Coach Mandy, who overcame many hurdles in life, is using these skills in her career as a life coach to make a positive impact.

Reverend Phampha William Ramodike, Deputy Principal from Limpopo, used the skills learned in the program to improve the quality of education in his school and succeeded in getting the highest passing school in his district. “I had the privilege of attending a seminar where I was introduced to a free life skills community development programme called ‘Tools for Life’, It became clear to me that God had led me to the right place”.

“The programme trained me on skills to handle study difficulties, communication, conflict resolution, achieving goals, ethics and many more. After the seminar, I knew exactly how to improve my community, starting with my learners and it brought fantastic results,” said Ramodike.

Irene Moemise used the same tools to change her life by opening her own business. Moemise, like many South Africans, lost her employment due to the covid-19 impact. Despite being highly qualified for most jobs, even a Master’s degree in her field, she could win against retrenchment and struggled to find employment, but it wasn’t until she dedicated herself to this community skills development programme that her fate changed.

“I got introduced to the Tools for Life programme and that was exactly what I needed. It gave me a sense of direction on what to do next,” said Moemise.

Moemise used the skills she learned through the programme to change her status from employee to employer by opening a growing bakery in the community of Meadowlands that has proven to be a hit with locals. Through her bakery known as Le’Bakery, she turned her passion to survive and achieve sustainability as a new entrepreneur.

Nonhlanhla Mthembu used the skills from this programme to open her own successful poultry farm. “This programme and what it taught me is the sole reason I am where I am today. I am a powerful individual today because of the Tools For Life,” remarked Mthembu.

Many more share weekly how this training has enabled them to finally achieve their dreams and finally be able to bring solutions to their families and communities, said Hlayisi. “We make this training available to people from all walks of life. It is applicable to everyone, it doesn’t matter what religion, profession, race, color or area people are from. Everyone can benefit from this practical skills training,” added Hlayisi. 

“Real empowerment begins with getting an individual to believe that they can control life and achieve their dreams. This program is called Tools for Life because it equips individuals with tools to handle life. That is exactly what the creator of these skills, L. Ron Hubbard wanted when he authored this powerful program,” concluded Hlayisi. 

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers also vowed that they are open to bringing this to everyone in the country and are looking forward to the many more people that are going to benefit from this skills training. They consider it to be part of their role in improving the conditions many face in life.

The Church of Scientology South Africa in Castle Kyalami reports its activities in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day. The “International Overdose Awareness Day” is a global event held in August of each year since 2001. Its purpose is to raise awareness of overdoses, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends. Turning this day into a full month of awareness activities, the Church of Scientology got very busy and now reports on Drug-Free World lectures, seminars, presentations and booklet distributions done thus far and counting, by a large variety of groups all throughout South Africa and other African countries, to educate youths and adults on the seriously harmful effects of drugs. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit, international drug education program and is proudly sponsored by the Church of Scientology and Scientologists all over the world. 

Disturbed by the continental-wide scourge and rampage of drug abuse, overdoses and drug-related crimes such as trafficking, sexual assault and murder to name a few, South African and African volunteers aggressively hit the streets running reaching over 7,000 youths and adults with drug education lectures and distributing over 4,000 Truth About Drugs booklets, just within the first few weeks of August.

“It’s very easy to get our groups and volunteers active with the Drug-Free World movement, not just for International Overdose Awareness Day, but for the overall cause of ‘reaching kids before the drug dealers do’”, says Asthra Maximov Director of Social Reform for Africa. “Our founder L. Ron Hubbard inspires me to take a leading role in preventing illicit and mind-altering drugs from taking over our society and getting into the hands of the more vulnerable, such as our youths”, Maximov added. “This is why I take great pride in what I do in advocating education about the harmful effects of drugs, so we can build a better tomorrow”. 

With over 1,000 hours passionately expended thus far for anti-drug activities in the community, South African and African Drug-Free World volunteers are ever-so-proud of their work and continue to encourage others in living drug-free lives.

I have since formed multiple Drug-Free World groups throughout Southern Africa such as in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Swaziland”, said Pastor B. Radebe, active Drug-Free World volunteer in South Africa. “I acknowledged International Overdose Awareness Day by going to 6 different schools in Swaziland giving Truth About Drugs lectures to some 800 students. I am very proud to continue this fight against drugs, thanks to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World campaign”, Radebe added. 

“I am so proud of my Drug-Free World volunteers and groups”, said T. Nyashanu Drug-Free World Coordinator in Bulawayo Zimbabwe and President of the Youth In Combined Action Against Drugs and Substance Abuse non-profit organisation. “Throughout the month of August, so far we have educated over 700 youths, students and community members in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day and we are still going! The drug epidemic in Zimbabwe is rampant and we need to act now before it’s too late”, Nyashanu added. “With the help of the Foundation For a Drug-Free World and the Church of Scientology, this is actually possible”.  

As more anti-drug activities for International Overdose Awareness Day continue throughout the remainder of August, the Church of Scientology will provide further updates of more actions being done to prevent the tragedies of drug addiction and overdose in South Africa and Africa.
