The Impact of the Cost of Living Crisis

To offer cost of living support to those affected, Hodge has conducted research into the cost of living crisis, finding that emergency fund savings are on the rise and people are saving specifically for the cost of living, particularly those under 50. So, what is the cost of living crisis?

The cost of living crisis in the UK means everyday essentials like groceries, energy and fuel have gone up in price quicker than the average household income is increasing. The UK saw a sharp increase in inflation in 2021 and 2022 post-pandemic, reaching a peak of 11.1% in October 2022.

In Hodge’s research, which was a study involving 2,000 people aged 21-55+ with incomes ranging from £18k to more than £100k who were asked a series of questions relating to their spending habits, savings, and feelings towards the cost of living crisis, the bank found:

  • 63% of participants have reduced the money they spend on dining out
  • 57% have spent less on luxury goods
  • 55% are spending less on groceries
  • 45% have reduced their spending on socialising
  • 48% have cut spending on holidays

Additionally, Hodge observed a significant proportion of participants were consistently saving for an emergency fund, with 54% creating an emergency cost of living savings pot compared to 58% a year ago. On the whole, 58% of people were concerned about rising interest rates and subsequent loan repayments, while 58% planned to move their savings to get the best return.

While the cost of living crisis affects everyone in the UK, Hodge discovered age, gender, and income impact the amount people are saving and how worried they are about their finances.

Overall, 61% were concerned about the performance of the UK’s economy. Those under 50 years were significantly more concerned than those over 50, and women were 11% more likely to be worried than men. Significantly, the bank also found:

  • 66% of people are concerned about managing their finances
  • Men are more confident than women when it comes to their finances
  • Under 20s are most likely to cut back on their grocery shopping
  • 61-70 year olds are most concerned about energy prices

Another factor that played a crucial role in the impact of the crisis was the location of the participants, with different places affecting people in different ways. The results highlighted for Hodge that almost 1/3 of those living in London are worried about house prices, with 22.5% of Londoners saving more for house deposits. Other findings displayed:

  • 38% of Londoners are more likely to save for holidays than other regions
  • 61% of Scots are more likely to save for emergencies
  • 75% of those living in Wales are more concerned about the cost of everyday items
  • 70% of those living in Northern Ireland are worried about fuel prices

The different prices set by energy suppliers in each region also played a role, with Hodge discovering those living in North West England were more concerned about energy prices, and due to this, a huge 80% of those people were more likely to reduce their energy usage for financial reasons.

According to the report, the company recorded overall net revenues of RMB1.7 billion in the first half of 2023, up 13.8% YoY. The results highlight a 27.6% YoY growth in net revenue and a 17.2% increase compared to the previous quarter. Operating profit increased by 8.1% YoY and 25.3% compared to the previous quarter.

In addition, the quarterly data show that the net revenue of the overseas segment increased by 146.8% YoY and by 22.5% quarter-on-quarter.

As of the second quarter of 2023, Noah International had more than 13,600 international clients, with the number of clients in Hong Kong and Singapore grew by 12.8% and 185.2% YoY respectively. In 2023, Noah strengthened the screening, coverage and launching of top tier global hedge fund managers, as well as the introduction of USD structured products, effectively completed Noah’s overseas product matrix.

“Current drilling at Rowan has only tested mineralization down to a depth of approximately 550 meters,” stated WRLG. “All of the high-grade zones still remain open below this vertical depth. The Red Lake Mining District is known to host orebodies that extend down to +4 kilometre (km) depth, which bodes well for the down-plunge growth potential at Rowan”.

“The Rowan project has 800,000 ounces of gold already defined as a resource,” Williams told GSN. “But we consider it an exploration stage project. It’s a typical Red Lake system. As we drill deeper into the system, we’re getting higher grades. As a stand-alone asset, this has value.”

“But to maximize returns on Rowan we would like to feed the ore to the Madsen Mill,” Williams continued. “The material could be trucked around the lake or across an ice-road in the winter.”

At the Rowan project, WRLG has completed 37 drill holes (11,467 meters) of a drilling program that has been expanded from 17,000 meters to 25,000 meters.

As infill and expansion drilling takes place at Rowan, WRLG baseline environmental and archaeological assessments have begun with the objective of moving the project towards an Advanced Exploration Permit status.

The NextSTEPS Mentoring Program serves hundreds of young people ages 16-24 who reside in NYCHA housing every year. Mentors help youth connect to education and career opportunities, provide youth with a trusted adult who can support them in challenging times, and help guide youth as they navigate decisions and enter adulthood. NextSTEPS programs also employ community members, providing them with an opportunity to achieve both economic stability and mobility.

A Plea for Reconsideration

Despite mentorship being included in the Blueprint for Community Safety, NextSTEPS mentoring contracts are being canceled. After hearing the terrible news, program participants and their families were devastated, as organizations have not been given enough time to smoothly transition participants into other supportive programs. Many have said they feel abandoned by the City and hopeless about their ability to stay out of the criminal legal system without the support of their mentors.
