Wing Security has revealed statistics that reveal firsthand insights into the security challenges of SaaS applications.
United States – February 2, 2024 —
Conducted by Wing Security, these statistics provide essential firsthand insights into the utilization, management, and security of SaaS applications. Utilizing Wing’s vast SaaS Reputation Database, containing over 300,000 records, and analyzing data from nearly 500 SaaS-using companies within Wing’s customer base, Wing’s analysis provides statistics aimed at illustrating real-world challenges in SaaS security, while also offering solutions to these same challenges. Encompassing topics such as Shadow IT, Shadow AI risks, inadvertent data exposure, and intricacies of access control, Wing’s analysis sheds light on how organizations are navigating the complexities of securing—or occasionally failing to secure—their SaaS applications, users, and data.
Below are some highlights from the company’s 2024 report.
General application usage insights
Wing believes the results below reflect the fact that organizations may have an unnecessarily large attack surface and by onboarding unnecessary SaaS or neglecting to safely onboard necessary SaaS, are exposing themselves to risks that could ultimately be avoided.
For example, it was discovered that 96.7% of organizations used at least 1 app that had a security incident in the past year. In addition, 81% of organizations had at least 1 app being used by a single user, in which a security incident had occurred.
AI application usage insights
AI will continue to be a key tool for companies in 2024. Wing found that while 83.2% of organizations are using purpose-built AI applications, 99.7% of organizations are using applications with integrated AI capabilities. These capabilities often go unnoticed as these are regular SaaS applications that now integrate AI capabilities and, unless users are very careful in examining updates to the T&C, can lead to AI storing, learning and even analyzing their most sensitive data. It was also discovered that 70% of the top 10 most common AI apps can use an organization’s data to train its models.
Data usage insights
Wing’s statistics reveal that organizations are often neglecting the controlling and monitoring of who has access to the data. This failure to monitor data over extended periods ignites security concerns.
Wing discovered that 67% of files are shared as ‘anyone with a link’ and have write permissions. In addition, it was discovered that 85% of files shared as “anyone with the link” were not accessed within at least 6 months.
When it comes to the sharing of sensitive data, the stats are no less alarming. Wing detected that 73% of organizations had sensitive data shared externally. It underscores the prevalence of organizations having their sensitive data vulnerable and beyond their organizational control.
General user insights
Wing’s findings on how data is being shared externally are a cause for concern. 85% of organizations have external users that can access their data, posing a potential security risk since these users may not adhere to the same security standards. Unfortunately, these insights reveal instances where data ends up in unauthorized hands, posing substantial risks to the organization. Additionally, Wing noticed an alarming issue regarding insider threats, where 1 out of 5 organizations had indications that users were not fully offboarded, and potentially still had access to company data.
