The sibling duo of F-flat Books publishes Rosie Rocks!, a story focused on empowering children through music.
Philadelphia, PA, United States – May 23, 2024 —
The local sibling duo behind the independent publisher, F-flat Books, has recently published Rosie Rocks!, a story centered on empowering children through music. This book follows a young girl, Rosie, who has always dreamed of playing the electric guitar.
This release is the result of combined passions in both art and music. Sarah Gulish, a music educator of 17 years, and David Allen, a film photographer, wrote this book to show the importance of arts education.
“As a music teacher, I always tried to find ways to reach kids that weren’t currently in the music program and carve a space for them in the music room,” Sarah said. “I have seen music transform the lives of young children and this book is a celebration of the power of music.”
When she initially pitched the idea to her artist brother, he jumped at the chance to illustrate in a nonconventional way. Using carefully constructed cardboard backdrops, he photographed all the settings on film and illustrated the characters on top of the settings, creating impressive visuals throughout.
“I tried to pay homage to Philly throughout the book and construct scenery that felt like home,” David said. From bustling row homes to Philly references throughout the book, this release pays tribute to the town that the siblings were raised in.
This book is the first release from the new imprint Enharmonic Books, a subsidiary of F-flat Books, which is co-run by Gulish and Allen. They have been publishing resources for parents and educators since 2019 and Enharmonic will be solely dedicated to their picture books. “We have so many great books in store for this next publishing season,” Sarah remarked, “and many stories that need to be told.”
Rosie Rocks! will be released on May 24th, 2024, and will be available at F-flat Books and wherever books are sold. The hardback and eBook versions are available for preorder at F-flat Books.
The book has already received critical acclaim, including a 5-star review from Reader’s Favorite, stating: “What a delightful picture book…In short? Rosie rocks in more ways than one. Bravo! (Viga Boland)”
