Top African-American Women Share How They Navigated Entrepreneurship A Resource For Black Women In Business Today

During February 2016, Black History Month, mediapreneur Lisa Williams sat down with several successful African-American female entrepreneurs to discuss what it is like to be in business, and how they navigated the road to entrepreneurialism. The interviews serve as a valuable resource for today’s black female business owners.

Mediapreneur Lisa Williams sat down with several Top African-American female entrepreneurs to discuss the challenges unique to Black women in business, and how they reached a level of success in spite of many of them being first-generation business owners.

The women were chosen and highlighted for their accomplishments, and for leading by example while pressing through sometimes difficult times. The interviews took place as part of an effort to highlight some of today’s leading women who are part of the fastest-growing segment of entrepreneurs in the U.S. Williams interviewed 22 prominent African-American business women who spoke about how they grew their businesses.

Williams pointed out in the interviews that “One of the greatest challenges African-American women face in business is the lack of successful black businesswomen role models in our communities that we can actually call on and get advice from.”

The women who were interviewed came from many different fields including the technology sector, media, law, entertainment, beauty, non-profit, business, real estate, medical and many more.

The women included:

• Cheryl Contee is the CEO of Fission Strategy, a marketing/social media/branding company that specializes in helping nonprofits, foundations and social enterprises to create global change; and Attentive.ly, a rising tech startup.

• Cathy Hughes is the former CEO of Radio One and is currently the board chair and secretary of the largest African-American owned and operated broadcast company in the U.S. 

• Asmau Ahmed is the creator of Plum Perfect, a search engine and technology that allows users to upload a selfie and receive makeup shade recommendations to match and complement their complexion the technology also does much more. 

• Zandra Cunningham is a 15 year old Founder of Zandra Beauty and an already accomplished entrepreneur who makes and sells soaps, scrubs, hair care products and lotions.

• Lisa Nicole Bell is the founder of Intersect Studios, an internationally-known media and technology company.

• Dr. Simone Ellis, DDS is a general dentist and the owner of Smile Design Studios in Missouri City, Texas.

• Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green is a physicist and assistant professor at Tuskegee University who recently earned a $1.1 million research grant to develop an innovative cancer treatment.

• Julie Gordon is the founder and CEO of The Well For Women Entrepreneurs as well as BlueKey Media Group, a publishing and speaking company.

• Dr. Sadie Sheafe is a licensed psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, a board-certified clinical sexologist, and a licensed clinical social worker in Hampton, Virginia.

• LaQuita Sharee Lewis-Poole is a lifestyle/business coach and the founder of LSLP Global Empowerment LLC

• Nicole Hancock Husband is an attorney and a certified professional co-active coach in Los Angeles.

• Debra Mars is the CCO of GiftedbyDezyn, a promotional products and services agency, which is also an emerging business partner with the NFL.

• Dr. Dina D. Strachan, MD is the director of Aglow Dermatology; she is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in medical and cosmetic dermatology in New York.

• Tallulah Marcelin is a celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist and owner of I Love Lulu Hair Spa in Los Angeles, an all-natural, holistic hair salon hair care line.

• Courtney Johnson Rose is the Principal Broker of George E. Johnson Properties, a full service real estate firm specializing in residential and commercial services in Houston, TX.

• Dominique Broadway is an award-winning personal finance expert and money therapist, and founder of Finances De*Mys*Ti*Fied.

• Monique Cardine is a TV and radio personality, and the CEO of Momentum Media Group, an award-winning, multi-faceted media company in San Marcos, Texas.

• Rhonda Wilkins is a 20-year veteran in the entertainment industry, and CEO of Divas Unlimited Inc., an Atlanta-based event marketing and production boutique.

• Nicole Garner Scott is the principal of The Garner Circle PR and the Founder and President of a digital community for women 100 Female Entrepreneurs.

Williams had the opportunity to interview Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, who at 34 is one of fewer than 100 black female physicists in the country. Dr. Green recently won a $1.1 million grant to further develop a technology she’s pioneered that uses laser-activated nanoparticles to treat cancer.

Williams said, “As black women, we have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, from our great grandmothers and grandmothers cleaning houses for a living, to women hosting bus trips and church fish fries. Now it’s time to talk about today’s entrepreneurial women, their experiences as business owners, both the good and the not so good.”

Cathy Hughes, the legendary founder of Radio One, the only African-American owned cable television network in the country, said this about the interview, “When I got your request, I was like, ‘I’d be honored to do this sisters show.’  You were supportive enough to want to tell my story, and I was supportive enough to do it.  Sisters really do support one another.”

The women who were interviewed discussed how they overcame challenges in business; what they did when they got stuck, when they wanted to quit, when they didn’t know how to access capital and when they became overwhelmed and didn’t know where to turn.

Williams started the interviews by speaking about leading African-American women such as First Lady Michelle Obama, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, Sheila C. Johnson — the founder of BET and the first African-American female billionaire and Ursula Burns, the first African-American female CEO of a Fortune 500 company. These are examples of women who were among the first to achieve their level of success.

Williams shared a recent statistic that women-owned businesses are exploding across the country with a 74 percent growth between 1997 and 2015, and focused on the fact that African-American women entrepreneurs are the fastest-growing segment of entrepreneurs in the U.S. With such statistics in mind, Williams was inspired to bring these women together to help African-American women business owners, as she puts it, to “not just be in business but grow their businesses.”

Williams’ ultimate goal was to reveal these answers and make them available for other women to learn from and to help them build their own success.

Experts Agree Financial Education is Critical For Baby Boomers Heading into Retirement

A large number of Baby Boomers are heading toward retirement with what may not be the most adequate plan or savings. Too many are apt to fall prey to opportunistic investment advice simply because they aren’t as informed as they should be.

ROGERS, AR – 23 Mar, 2016 – According to Pew Research, Baby Boomers are streaming into retirement at a rate of 10,000 per day, and many of them are financially unprepared as you might expect. Financial professionals who are licensed to sell financial products and services to pre-retirees don’t always take priority in honestly informing their clients about their options.

The attitude that an educated consumer is the best customer is not the attitude of all investment advisors, and pre-retirees seem to be the ones who are hit hardest—partly because many may not as market savvy as long-time investors, and partly because the unique financial challenges of today’s economic landscape could be working against them.

Empowering the country’s aging population begins with informing them, according to Tony Hansmann, President of Guardian Financial in Rogers, Arkansas.

“I’m tired of Wall Street, it’s like a David and Goliath story,” he says. “What we’ve found is that Wall Street really pushes and wants people to speculate and gamble with their money, and we want to pick up the slingshot of justice against this giant. We teach just the opposite of what Wall Street pushes—we want to help people manage their money efficiently and with as much market risk exposure as they feel comfortable with.”

Today’s aging population already faces a stacked deck. The Social Security Administration advises that Social Security income should account for no more than 40 percent of a retiree’s monthly income. But according to a recent AARP report, 51 percent of surveyed Boomers are expected to rely on Social Security for 41 percent to 100 percent of their monthly household income. While payments from Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) have played a critical role in enhancing economic security and reducing poverty rates among people ages 65 and older, many older adults live on limited incomes and have modest savings—and these are the people most susceptible to investment cons.

Three things that an investor consumer planning for retirement should avoid are:

• The con man making lofty promises about guaranteed returns on investments should raise suspicion. All investments are based on risk, and there are never any guarantees, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

• The prognosticator, a “fortune teller” who pretends to be able to predict the future when it comes to market volatility. There is no crystal ball that guarantees any investment is safe.

• The guru, the celebrity money manager who’s following was legendary in past years. Nobody can predict who is going to be the next hot money manager, and there is no correlation between the stock picker today and his ability to be able to do it tomorrow.

When people are stressed about their retirement income status, it’s easy to be lured by the promises of so-called “experts” on Wall Street guaranteeing investment income streams. Many who are struggling develop a habit of getting sidetracked when they’re walking through the grocery line, or reading newsletters and emails about the “five star” money managers and their investment tips. They think to themselves that this is someone whose investment strategy is one to follow, but they don’t realize that these are predatory tactics employed to attract individuals who don’t have an understanding of how the stock market really works, and the results of following such strategies can be devastating.

“We believe in coaching retirees,” Hansmann says. “We want to coach and educate the client so that they are better able to avoid the con man, avoid the prognosticator, and avoid the guru,”

“The myth that the savvy investment manager is always going to be a five star fund picker is as real as the Easter bunny,” he says. “Our philosophy is, we don’t just manage portfolios, we manage people’s behavior—we work with portfolios that have people problems.”

According to TIAA-CREF’s “Ready to Retire Survey,” 52 percent of pre-retirees say they wish they had started saving for the future sooner, and many survey participants say they wish they had made smarter financial decisions earlier in their career.

Still, it is never too late to plan for retirement. As people move closer to collecting their last paycheck, they become more likely to consult a financial advisor for help planning their income stream during the golden years. Choosing a financial advisor who will understand each individual’s unique needs begins with looking for an advisor who is a licensed fiduciary, which means they hold a legal and ethical responsibility to act in their clients’ best interests.

A fiduciary can advise pre-retirees on the best ways to make retirement savings last, reduce or eliminate tax burdens in retirement, and other options, including the use of insurance products such as annuities, which can help to maintain an income stream that will last the rest of their lives.

In addition to adjusting to life without income from full-time employment, pre-retirees may also want to take into account the possibility of having long-term care needs and expenses in the future. A sudden hospitalization or an extended stay can dismantle even the best-laid retirement plans with one stay in a rehabilitation facility or nursing home.

CBRE’s NRIG-West Team Completes Sale of High-Profile Mill Avenue Properties for $13.8M in Downtown Tempe, Arizona

Phoenix, Ariz. – CBRE Executive Vice President Philip D. Voorhees and Vice President Brad Rable announced today that the National Retail Investment Group – West (NRIG-West), in union with Executive Vice President Barry Gabel and Senior Associate Chris Marchildon, completed the sale of a +39,979-square-foot two-property portfolio, 420 and 501 S. Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe, Arizona. The properties commanded a combined sale price of $13.8 million.

CBRE’s retail investment experts Voorhees, Gabel, Rable and Marchildon represented the seller, Beverly Hills, Calif.-based real estate investment company, Starpoint Properties, LLC. The buyer, also represented by CBRE, was a San Francisco-based private investor who completed the sale as part of a 1031 tax deferred exchange.

According to Gabel, “With a retail vacancy rate less than four percent, downtown Tempe is one of the healthiest and vibrant retail trade areas in the Valley.” He continued, “Downtown Tempe is an area of metro Phoenix that is thriving and seeing significant new development. 420 and 501 S. Mill Avenue are urban, infill, ‘main and main’ retail locations with excellent tenancy that will benefit from the continued growth of the submarket.”

Built in 1998 and 1891/1995, respectively, the properties at 420 and 501 S. Mill Avenue encompass a +15,460-square-foot site at the northwest corner of Mill Avenue and 5th Street, the primary intersection for dining, shopping and entertainment in the trade area. The properties were approximately 79 percent occupied at the time of sale. “Mill Avenue is arguably Arizona’s best known, pedestrian-oriented retail street,” said Rable. “Adjacent to the country’s largest public university, this offering presented an uncommon opportunity to own two assets at this very visible, highly-trafficked intersection.”

According to Voorhees, the CBRE team’s marketing system distributed more than 294 offering memoranda to investors and brokers, and through the team’s “managed bid” offer process, generated nearly twenty offers to purchase the property.

“The strong competition to acquire the Mill Avenue properties was based on investors seeking urban, infill repositioning opportunities,” said Rable.

With this closing, CBRE’s NRIG-West team has closed179 transactions since the start of 2012 for a total consideration of $3.4 billion.
