Menno Place Celebrates Life at Annual Butterfly Release

Each summer, Menno Place holds a special memorial event – the Butterfly Release Celebration. On Friday afternoon, over 300 people gathered in the Courtyard to participate in this cherished annual tradition. Moments of both joy and sorrow were shared as hundreds of new butterflies took flight to find their new home among the vibrant flowers. Mayor Henry Braun, along with several other local politicians, were on hand to say a few words of encouragement to the crowd of seniors and their loved ones.

This special afternoon of celebration and remembrance began with the Annual Memorial Service. Over 150 family, friends, residents and staff came to honour those who have passed away in the previous year at Menno Place. Led by the Pastoral Care Team, the Memorial is a time to share memories and support one another as a community.

The butterflies that are released after the memorial can have a lot of meaning for those who have experienced a loss. The metamorphosis of a butterfly is a powerful symbol in so many ways for us when we are grieving. We find hope in the transformation of these butterflies, a hope that even through transition and loss, beauty and new life can be found.

Forecaster say May 4 windstorm was a rare event

Shop Insurance Canada say, the May 4 windstorm that hit southern Ontario and particularly the Windsor region was a rare event, according to one weather forecasting Company. Indeed, that storm has been described as a damaging event that does not happen often, making it tough to prepare for in catastrophe modeling predictions.

“While the combination of factors on May 4 was rare, it is important for insurers, and those modeling future catastrophes, to recognize that it’s often rare events like these that cause the most damage – and they are also the events that are difficult to generalize in model predictions,” Scott Kehler, president and chief scientist of Winnipeg-based Weatherlogics Inc. told Canadian Underwriter Wednesday.

Kehler points out that most modeling works on the assumption that severe summer windstorms are caused directly from storms, according to previous data. “However, in this case, the winds were actually from weak storms, which models would assume are rather benign,” he said. “In addition, a large amount of the wind damage didn’t come from storms at all, but rather a passing trough of low pressure, which again isn’t usually considered to be a mechanism which would cause damage like we saw on May 4, 2018.”

Across Ontario the windstorm resulted in $380 million in insurance losses, while in Quebec the effect was lessened but still cost insurance companies $30 million. As we previously reported, the storm was the costliest cat even in Ontario since Toronto’s 2013 floods, which resulted in $1 billion in losses.

The windstorm occurred on May 4 and caused considerable damage through Ontario and parts of Quebec. Roof damage was most commonly reported, while felled trees caused structural damage and blocked roads. Power outages were also frequent, CatIQ points out.

Winds reached hurricane force of up to 150 km/h in Ontario.

“It has been quite a damaging year so far,” said Kim Donaldson, vice president, Ontario, with Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). “This year alone insurers have already paid out three-quarters of a billion dollars, just five months into 2018.”

Weatherlogics believe the storm was among the worst in Ontario history, detailing the effect of the winds in a report published on Wednesday. In previous cases, low pressure or thunderstorms create the strong windstorms in Ontario. “However, I’m not sure if these two factors have ever occurred in the same event and caused as much damage as we saw on May 4.”

“The fact that many wind speed records were set on May 4, including some that approached all-time records, suggest it’s unlikely any past events reached this magnitude.”

Santa Barbara, CA Author Publishes Memoir

“A History” of the People and Events at One of the Residential Hotels That Proliferate the Cities of America, a new book collected and edited by Frank M. Lick, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

This book recounts the author’s adventures during the time he owned a residential hotel. Through it all, the residents were a source of entertainment, fun, and laughter. The author hosted a variety of people – including a trained concert pianist, a Harvard graduate, a beauty contest winner, a priest, and numerous veterans. The tales range from sad to uplifting to downright unpredictable, but always with a lesson to be learned at the end. Each story is different from the others and holds its own indelible charm.

About the Author
Frank M. Lick was born the oldest of nine children in Utica, Michigan. He spent three years in the Marine Corps, owned and flew an aerobatic airplane, learned to read music, and play the piano after he was “60” years old and has been married fifty-five years, raising two step-children. He and his wife owned and operated gas stations, sold real estate, built houses and apartments, owned and operated a 200-acre citrus ranch, and, of course, ran their residential motel.

When Lick wasn’t busy with the above or getting his daily orders from the kids or their mother, he liked to nap in his chair in front of the fireplace. Of course there were downs during all this-Lick and his family weren’t immune to sadness and tears-but they did get this far… by hook or by crook!

“A History” of the People and Events at One of the Residential Hotels That Proliferate the Cities of America is a 630-page paperback with a retail price of $30.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4809-4564-7. It was published by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bowie, MD Author Publishes History Book on the Government

A Perspective on How Our Government Was Built And Some Needed Changes, a new book by Darrel A. Nash, has been released by RoseDog Books.

What do we mean by “we the people?” Who are the people? Who claims authority to speak for the people? How seriously do we take the words of our grand proclamations in the Declaration of Independence, the preamble to the US Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, and the Pledge of Allegiance? These are the questions that Darrel A. Nash pursues in this book. He finds a large mixture of conflicting answers as he explores the founding documents and later initiatives to build our democratic republic. The struggles for answers have continued throughout our history.

Part Two records the beginning of this inquiry. Nash wanted to find the bases for the First, Second, and Tenth Amendments to the Constitution. To do this, he reviewed the Federalist Papers which are purported to form the intellectual basis for the Constitution. He found several of the arguments less than convincing.

But before the reader can see why Nash made his conclusions in Part Two, Part One is needed to set the stage. This lays out how only a small part of the population was represented and participated in creating the Constitution. What might the Constitution be if all residents of the US had been represented in its creation?

Part Three goes into the Federalist Papers in more depth. It shows how a number of political forces have worked and are working today to influence how we, as a nation, interpret the Constitution and access the promises of the Founders. This Part ends with changes needed to proceed with creating a more perfect union-a nation that more fully lives up to our grand proclamations.

About the Author
Since retiring from the federal government in Washington, DC, Darrel A. Nash has written a number of stories and essays for the delight of his friends and family. This is his first full-length book.

A Perspective on How Our Government Was Built And Some Needed Changes is a 166-page paperback with a retail price of $15.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4809-7915-4. It was published by RoseDog Books of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Patriotic Promotions Increase Summer Traffic

Dallas, Texas, June 26, 2018 – Retail businesses often struggle with promotional ideas for the summer. The patriotic holidays of summer offer a perfect opportunity to increase retail store traffic with a themed sweepstakes or drawing.

The Bernie the Bear and Patriotic Stocking promotions by Bagwell Promotions can increase retail traffic to stores that want or have customers with children. Similar to the World’s Largest Christmas Stocking that many businesses use during the holidays, the Patriotic Stocking comes in 6 or 8 feet long versions, looks like a firecracker, and is crammed with a selection of best-selling toys. The 3′ tall plush Bernie the Bear has a classic radio flyer wagon packed with 8 – 10 summer toys. Entry blanks, a registration box, a colorful poster and a press release packet are all included. This complete promotional kit provides everything needed to attract families to any kind of store.

Dentists and doctors, car dealers, furniture stores, check cashing stores, banks and credit unions, entertainment centers, and other retail establishments have all found this campaign will increase sales and awareness for the store.

John Bagwell, President of Bagwell Promotions stresses that a business that wants to increase family traffic, encourage customer loyalty, and build contact lists will find these promotions beneficial.

“For instance, family restaurants find these promotions don’t just increase the number of customers,” Bagwell adds. “People come more often and the display helps keep the kids occupied while their parents are waiting to be seated by the hosting staff.”

Bernie the Patriotic Bear and the Patriotic Stocking are seasonal favorites among Bagwell’s clients. Bagwell notes that almost 80 percent of customers reorder year after year. Stores with several different locations can have the promotions drop-shipped to each store. “It’s not unusual for us to ship to 50 or 60 locations for the same company,” says Bagwell.

Conroe, TX Author Publishes Poetry

Life’s Inspirations, a new book by Dorothy Jean Crum, has been released by RoseDog Books.

Most of the poems in Life’s Inspirations are about the author’s personal feelings, thoughts, friends, family, kids, grandkids, and faith. The thoughts she has at any moment turn into a poem. She writes from her heart and experiences in her life; everything she deals with pours out into her work. The author experienced a lot of heartache and sorrow, but kept her faith and looked up to God for guidance in her life, making the best of it that she could. She believes that God has given her this talent because once she has thought about certain things she can sit down and type or write it down within thirty minutes the way it comes to her.

Crum hopes that her poems in Life’s Inspirations will also inspire readers as well.

About the Author
Dorothy Jean Crum was born and raised in Deming, New Mexico. She graduated from Deming High School in 1962, then attended college at Western New Mexico University. She played cornet for eight years while attending schools. She was considered the top girl cornet player in the state of New Mexico. She has two children, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Crum worked all her life. She was a waitress, sewed pockets on sailor’s pants, a packing company clerk, a mechanic’s helper in disassembling airplane engines, a clothing store manager, a bus driver, a route coordinator, and drove hot shots. For a few years she worked ninety hours a week to support her children in between marriages. When she retired, she raised three grandchildren for almost nine years, two of whom had ADHD.

Crum started writing more poetry later in life. She enjoys sewing (learning to make quilts), scrap-booking, genealogy, gardening, hunting, and fishing. Crum also enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Life’s Inspirations is an 84-page paperback with a retail price of $22.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4809-7883-6. It was published by RoseDog Books of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Schools and Organizations Consider Clear Backpacks For Safety

Dallas, Texas, June 26, 2018 – Following recent school shootings, many school districts have initiated restrictions on the type of backpacks students can bring to school. Starting in the fall, students from pre-K to 12th grade who attend schools in some school districts will be required to carry only transparent backpacks to class. Clear backpacks allow administrators and other officials an easy way to see what is actually in a backpack.

Now, Businesses and Non-Profit Organizations can purchase Clear Backpacks with their name, logo or message imprinted. For companies that have students or parents as customers, this can offer an opportunity to provide something of value that will be appreciated. Non-profit organizations such as PTAs or Student groups can put the school logo or team slogan on these clear student backpacks.

One company offering these clear backpacks is Bagwell Promotions in Dallas, Texas. According to John Bagwell, owner, “Because this can be an additional strain on many parents budgets, local businesses and organizations have found a way to provide these to schools.” He added, “These clear backpacks can be imprinted with a message, name or logo, while still allowing easy viewing of the contents.”

These clear backpacks may also be useful for other events such as sporting events, concerts or other venues where a clear bag is required.

However, Bagwell warns that before purchasing these promotional items, You should check with the school district, arena or organization to make sure your backpack or bag meets the size requirement for that specific use.
