SAN DIEGO, CA, 3/10/18 – On Tuesday, March 6, 2018, students at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law were invited to join Professor of Law Maurice Dyson at the National Action Network House of Justice at the Ebenezer Baptist Church to discuss bringing greater transparency and accountability to excessive police force and shootings in communities of color. The dialogue with community leaders included nationally prominent civil rights attorneys Solomon Simmons and Benjamin Crump, who is known for his association with the 2012/2013 George Zimmerman case, and for representing the family of Michael Brown, a 17-year-old African-American man shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri.

The attorneys discussed the need for greater documentation and consistent, persistent action to keep pressure on police forces, internal affairs, district attorneys and civilian review boards to do the right thing in holding police accountable for their actions. Tiffany Crutcher, sister of the slain Terence Crutcher, also spoke movingly about how the television reporters in the helicopters above callously and unfairly branded her brother as “bad dude,” as the police shot her brother with his hands still in the air on tape for all to see. She shared how the police shot him and tazed him and proceeded to walk over him while he was dying without performing emergency aid or immediately seeking urgent medical assistance.

Many community leaders present spoke about a phenomenon where cities superficially put a person of color on civilian review boards but then fail to hold meetings or to take any action, including those long promised to be implemented only when faced with a lawsuit. The attorneys spoke passionately about the victim blaming that happens on a national scale whenever these incidents are covered in the media. They discussed the need to develop a public statistical report card for each city on how well the city is implementing reforms, including diversity hiring and implicit bias training for officers, investigators, and elected officials.

The law students were able to dialogue and network with prominent attorneys and civil rights leaders and hear moving stories from committed activists taking action in their communities around the country.

Barry Douglas Bowers, beloved husband, father, and friend went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 29, 2013. He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his amazing wife and best friend of twenty-nine years, Julia Bowers. They have six children and nine grandchildren together, and Barry has three brothers and one sister. His family was his life and they along with close friends recall the spontaneous words of life he often shared that served as a source of hope and stability. Barry Douglas Bower’s selfless and compassionate heart was experienced by all whose lives he touched.

Early on in his ministry, Barry Douglas Bowers worked with Promise Keepers to foster the development of strong husband and fathers. In the late nineties he was involved in coordinating a series of community-wide tent revivals called “It’s All About Jesus” to encourage unity among Christians in the triple cities. Shortly after, he was ordained as a pastor through the Free Methodist Church. In an effort to foster the “true” purpose of church and provide a place to worship freely, he began Public Square Ministries, and in 2009 he brought back “It’s All About Jesus”, a summer-long revival held at the Binghamton Plaza. Barry Douglas Bowers continued to minister to many up until his entrance to heaven, and his investment in God’s work will long be remembered by all those he encountered.

Macmillan Jones economists say job vacancies in Germany reached a record high in the final quarter of last year, emphasizing the power of a job market that is fueling salary growth and boosting a consumer led boom in Europe’s largest economy.

According to a survey by the IAB labor office research institute, vacancies increased by 85,000 on a quarterly basis and by 128,000 on an annual basis and stood at 1.18 million in the final three months of last year.

Macmillan Jones analysts say that demand for new employees increased the most in the manufacturing and construction sectors.

Companies in the manufacturing sector reported 161,000 vacancies, a 35 percent increase from the year before and vacancies in the construction sector rose by 24 percent.

An index gauging the ratio between employment vacancies and unemployment fell to an all-time low of 2.0.

A Macmillan Jones economist stated that the data revealed better job market conditions for job seekers but also pointed to greater challenges for employers recruiting new employees.

When questioned about the main problems involved in recruiting, employers blamed a shortage of applicants and a lack of sufficient qualifications.

Unemployment figures declined more than anticipated last month while employment reached an all-time high in January this year.

German companies are becoming increasingly concerned by a shortage of skilled persons of working age caused by a significant upswing in the German economy.

German employers are offering big incentives such as higher than inflation pay rises, more lenient working hours and nurseries in the workplace.

Trails and Trailblazers: Public Education and School Desegregation in Lunenburg County, Virginia 1870-1970, a new book by Shirley Robertson Lee, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

Following the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, this book provides a story of how Lunenburg County, a rural school district, in Southside Virginia transitioned – in the span of one hundred years – from a segregated to an integrated, unified system. The Lunenburg story is as important as that of its neighbor, Prince Edward County, although its transition is less dramatic. This story is part of what occurred in public education during this important chapter.

As a life-long resident of Lunenburg County and former student attending segregated schools from the first to eleventh grade and an integrated school during her senior year, Shirley Robertson Lee offers a thoroughly researched and passionate study of public education and school desegregation. By the time segregated schools ended in Lunenburg County in the fall of 1969, it had been nearly fifteen years since America’s racially segregated school systems were found to be unconstitutional in the case of Brown v. Board of Education on May 1, 1954. The first totally integrated Lunenburg senior class graduated in spring of 1970. Shirley Robertson Lee is a member of that class.
