1-800-CAR-WRECK® Reports Fatal Car Wrecks Are On the Rise And Here’s Why

Eberstein Witherite LLP 1800 Car Wreck Fort Worth, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Fatal car wrecks continue to be a major problem in the U.S., and according to Fox News, an estimated 40,000 people died in car accidents in 2016, a six percent increase from 2015, and a 14 percent increase from 2014.

If these numbers hold, it would mean that 2016 was the deadliest in the U.S. since 2007. (1)

What makes theses figures even more concerning is that fatal car accidents increased 7.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, which was the highest percentage increase since 1966. And it is estimated that the total number of vehicle miles driven is also set to increase, pointing to one of the major causes of fatal accidents in the U.S.

These numbers should grab the attention of all drivers because without understanding the major contributing factors in these accidents, it will be impossible to implement strategies to lower car accident fatalities.

Fatal Car Accident Causes

The challenge of improving fatal accident rates was highlighted by a recent survey taken by the National Safety Council (NSC), which found that: (2)

83 percent of drivers believed driving presented safety issues
64 percent said they were comfortable driving above the speed limit
47 percent said they were comfortable texting manually or through voice activation
13 percent said they drove after smoking marijuana
10 percent said they drove after consuming too much alcohol

These attitudes make it difficult for motorists to change their dangerous behavior, even after learning that these behaviors are part of the fatal car accident causes that continue to make auto safety such a challenge.

“I think most drivers understand how some of their activities may contribute to car wrecks,” stated Amy Witherite, partner at the personal injury law firm of Eberstein Witherite, LLP. “But knowing how something elevates a risk does not mean that drivers will necessarily change long-standing behavior.”

In fact, the biggest fatal car accident causes of 2016 were very similar to the contributing factors that caused a majority of fatal car wrecks in 2015, including:

Speeding – more than a dozen states have increased speed limits on interstate highways during the past three years, contributing to the natural tendency of many drivers to exceed speed limits by five to 10 miles per hour.
Driver Distraction – this includes behavior such as texting while driving, using electronic devices such as a tablet while driving, eating, chatting with other passengers, applying makeup, and reaching for fallen objects on the floor.
Alcohol and Drug Impairment – significantly compromises reaction time, focus, concentration and a driver’s ability to make sound decisions.
Drowsy Driving – this can be caused by exhaustion, or by drivers who take prescription pills. Drowsy driving robs motorists of focus and reaction time and it can also cause a person’s eyes to close, which can have devastating consequences.

Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Also a Factor In Fatal Car Wrecks

In addition to these main causes, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified vehicles miles traveled (VMT) as another contributor.

VMT is calculated as the total annual vehicles miles traveled, divided by the total population in a state or in a country, and is expressed per 100 million miles traveled. (3)

A robust economy has lead to the creation of thousands of more trucking jobs, which has directly increased VMT figures. And has also created more discretionary income, spurring millions more Americans to take road-trip vacations, which also impacts VMT.

The more cars and trucks that are on the road, the greater the likelihood of more accidents, which is evidenced by the fact that VMT has increased steadily over the past few years.

What To Do After A Car Accident

While fatal car wrecks continue to rise, there are still thousands of accidents in which survivors must grapple with their change in circumstances.

There is no easy answer about what to do after a car accident, but one of the most important first steps is to talk to a reputable personal injury law firm, such as the team at 1-800-CAR-WRECK.

“I have been in car accidents before,” stated Amy Witherite, “So, I can put myself in the shoes of my clients who have suffered injuries in these wrecks. And I know from my own experience, that I needed someone else to handle the little and big things for me because my life came to a complete stop. That’s why our team is so focused on keeping your life running after a wreck.”

Truck Accidents Happen When Truckers Ignore Height And Weight Restrictions

Dallas, Texas, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

As a regular motorist, you probably don’t pay much attention to signs on the highway that warn about weight or height limits. Your sedan or SUV isn’t going to cause a bridge to collapse, and the roof of your family car probably isn’t tall enough to strike the underside of an overpass. Simply put, height and weight restrictions aren’t in place for the average motorist.

These warning signs are there for one class of drivers: commercial trucks. This includes tractor-trailers with a high profile and a heavy load that can weigh 80,000 pounds or more. As Americans know, our nation’s highways are in dire need of repair, and many of the country’s bridges simply can’t handle excess weight.

Unfortunately, some truck drivers interpret these warning signs as suggestions rather than mandates. When trucks attempt to squeeze under bridges or travel across highways that aren’t equipped to handle their weight, they put everyone on the road at risk.

Trucker Negligence Puts All Motorists at Risk

A late June 2017 semi-truck crash in a Minnesota tunnel is just the latest example of a semi-truck driver ignoring posted weight restrictions. According to media reports, the Lowry Hill Tunnel in Minneapolis restricts semitrailer trucks, over-the-road buses, delivery trucks, and vehicles weighing over 9,000 pounds from traveling inside the tunnel.

Despite the ban, traffic cameras set up by the Minnesota Department of Transportation have caught several large trucks traveling through the tunnel, causing bottlenecks in traffic. A department spokesperson stated, “It’s a combination of truckers not knowing or not caring. There is limited clearance, risk to the safety of other vehicles. They need to stay out of there.”

In a separate incident in New Jersey, a portion of New Jersey’s Atlantic City Line railroad had to be shut down because a boom truck struck a bridge and damaged the rails overhead. According to a media report, the accident was the third truck-related accident in New Jersey in a single week.

In yet another accident, Houston officials were forced to shut down multiple lanes on the Katy Freeway in early July 2017 when a semi-truck struck a bridge.

Texas Truck Accident Lawyer Discusses Semi-Truck Height and Weight Limits

Fort Worth Texas truck accident lawyer Amy Witherite states: “Truck height and weight limits are in place for a very good reason. They are not suggestions. Truckers who ignore height and weight limits put themselves and everyone on the road at risk. They also risk destroying bridges and sections of road that can cost millions of dollars to repair.”

Pedestrians Hit Off Road Says Philadelphia Pedestrian Accident Lawyer Rand Spear

Philadelphia, PA, USA, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

When vehicles strike pedestrians it just doesn’t happen when people are trying to cross the road. They can happen any time vehicles and pedestrians meet, including on sidewalks or in parking lots and garages. Philadelphia pedestrian accident lawyer Rand Spear warns pedestrians to be on the lookout for vehicles no matter where they’re walking.

Pedestrians are often the victims of accidents because drivers don’t notice them or they are in the wrong place at the wrong time and are struck by out of control vehicles.

An 83-year-old Vineland, New Jersey, resident planning on attending the Philadelphia Flower Show in March was killed when she was struck by a chartered bus in a parking lot, reports the Vineland Daily Journal. She was pinned under the front wheel near the entrance door and died at the scene.

A Northeast Philadelphia resident was run over by a police cruiser in a Kensington park in April and died a week later because of her injuries, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Two officers were in a cruiser on a pedestrian path in McPherson Square when the driver reversed the vehicle and struck the forty year old mother of two. She suffered a broken pelvis, broken ribs and was on life support after the accident.

A man struck by an SUV after leaving a restaurant in Bear, Delaware, was killed in a hit and run accident, according to WPVI. Police report the victim was walking in a parking lot when he was hit by a Cadillac Escalade. The driver didn’t stop and also struck a parked vehicle and the Alpha Worship Center building before leaving the scene.

Though vehicles should be travelling at slower speeds in parking lots, that doesn’t mean they are safe places for pedestrians. The National Safety Council reported in November that up to two-thirds of drivers in parking lots may be too distracted to safely operate their vehicles. An estimated one in five accidents occur in parking lots, reports CBS News.

The National Safety Council estimates that at least 60,000 people suffer injuries and 500 or more people are killed in the roughly 50,000 accidents in parking lots and garages every year. A survey found 66% of respondents stated they felt comfortable making calls while driving in a parking lot and more than half admitted to texting while driving.

An AAA Mid-Atlantic study found that 30% of pedestrian accidents in Montgomery County in Maryland from January to the end of July in 2013 happened in parking lots, up from 22% in 2008, reports WJLA. An estimated 20% of all vehicle accidents nationwide happen in parking lots of shopping malls, shopping centers, supermarkets and big box stores. The county saw a 34% percent spike in vehicle-pedestrian accidents in parking lots and parking garages in 2012 compared to 2011.

If you or a loved one were involved in a pedestrian accident caused by a negligent vehicle driver don’t wait to speak to a personal injury lawyer about the case. Protect his or her rights by visiting us on the web or by calling New Jersey and Philadelphia pedestrian accident lawyer Rand Spear now at 877-GET-RAND.

Canines will be available to take home on site and Mathews Ford Oregon will be paying the adoption fees. Originally conceived by Sales Manager Brian Shephard, the event is meant as a means to introduce individuals to great new pets and vehicles. “It just hit me one day,” confides Brian. “This was just a great way to combine my passion for dogs and my passion for American vehicles. It’s awesome to be able to share the most exciting line-up ever from Ford while doing something that is great for the community.”

In addition to the pets that will be ready for adoption, there will also be a drop-off area for donations to benefit the shelters. “We’ll have an F-150 ready to go,” shares Brian. “This way it’s easy for people to just stop by and drop off items that the shelters tremendously need.” Donations that the shelters require include basic necessities like canned cat and dog food, non-clumping cat litter, meat flavored baby food, dental bones and peanut butter. Additional items such as kongs, nibble balls, treats, new or gently used bath towels and light weight blankets, bleach, distilled water, paper towels, garbage bags, disinfecting wipes, and spray bottles are also appreciated. “I hope we receive so many donations,” Briand laughs, “that we need to add another three trucks just to deliver it to the shelters.”

Special vehicle incentives will also be available during the event, which includes 0% financing on many new vehicles, like the 2017 Ford Escape and Focus. “Both vehicles and pets are available for adoption on those days, but our primary focus is on helping out the shelters,” adds Brian. “Even if you stop by and can’t take a pet home with you that day, we will still make an additional donation for each vehicle sold on the days of the event.”

Mathews Ford Oregon was established in 1952 and proudly serves customers with their new and used vehicle needs in addition to full auto service, collision and body shop repairs, and a car wash. “We love our community and we love the opportunity to help,” Brian says. “Please keep visiting our website and following our social media for more events and how we try to do some good in our neighborhood.”

Truckers May Skimp On Insurance Says Boca Truck Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Commercial trucking companies, like individual car owners in Florida, must carry liability insurance. Trucking companies’ insurance is covered by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which decided in June not to increase coverage minimums which have been in place for 32 years. This potentially leaves commercial truck accident victims holding the financial bag in case of a serious accident warns Boca truck accident lawyer Joe Osborne.

The federal government was in the process of requiring increased coverage, from $1 million to $3.2 million per accident, when the Trump Administration applied the brakes. The justifications for the increase are spelled out in a 2014 Congressional report which states the current coverage levels don’t adequately cover catastrophic crashes because of increasing medical costs. That report states:

If minimum coverage levels kept pace with the rate of medical care inflation by 2013 minimum levels would have increased to about $3.2 million.

When catastrophic accidents and critical injuries occur the costs of property damage, injuries and fatalities can easily exceed the $1 million minimum level of coverage.

Since 1985, when the current minimum level was set, the purchasing power of the coverage has decreased making insurance coverage less relevant over time.

If a trucking company is found liable in a truck accident case, it’s carrying only the required minimum coverage, but the damages are more than $1 million the company may need to sell its assets to cover the verdict, potentially forcing it out of business. If there aren’t enough assets to cover the verdict a successful plaintiff may be unable to fully collect a damages award.

The official reason for stopping the process was that the agency “has determined that it has insufficient data or information to support moving forward with a rulemaking proposal, at this time,” but there’s no indication it will actually try to get the additional information FMSCA claims it needs.

Not only does this harm motorists but also responsible trucking companies who are more concerned about safety than those who are trying to make the most money while risking the safety of others.

Higher limits would result in all trucking companies putting more attention on compliance with safety rules and driver safety because insurance carriers when underwriting these policies would hold trucking companies to higher standards.

With lower insurance premiums there’s less need for better compliance and those skimping on safety can charge less and successfully bid more often on hauling contracts.

Depending on the circumstance of a truck accident several parties may have played a role in causing it and there may be multiple insurance policies that could apply. Those injured in commercial truck accidents should contact an attorney as soon as possible so an investigation can take place, responsible parties can be uncovered and they can be held accountable.

If you or a loved one suffered an injury caused in a commercial truck accident, contact Boca truck accident lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. You can discuss your case, how the law may apply and your best legal options to protect your rights and obtain compensation for your injuries.

Gym Injury What You Can Learn From Your Lawyer

Philadelphia, 08/07/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Attorney Rand Spear, a Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyer Discusses Gym Injuries  –

If you’re like most people, you’re always looking for ways to shed a few pounds and fit into those skinny jeans you keep in the back of your closet. Everyone wants to look their best and feel great about their body.

Like anything else, however, moderation is generally the best bet when it comes to fitness. Unfortunately, extreme workouts can lead to injury. In some cases, excessive fitness regimens like CrossFit, Spinning, and P90X can cause life-threatening injuries and health conditions.

According to a recent CNN report, some gym buffs have experienced dangerous syndromes like rhabdomyolysis, in which the muscles swell, causing the body to retain water. If the condition gets to a certain point, the kidneys stop functioning, and the person is forced to go on dialysis. In extreme cases, it can lead to kidney failure and even death.

These health scares have caused some people to question what, if any, responsibility gyms bear when it comes to injuries.

Is Your Gym Responsible for Your Injury?

Extreme workouts like P90X and CrossFit have exploded in popularity, but experts say that one of the many red flags with these programs is that they simply aren’t for everyone. The CrossFit co-founder, Greg Glassman, told the New York Times, “It can kill you.” That’s a pretty self-explanatory statement if ever there was one.

In nearly every gym in the country, you must sign some type of liability waiver when you join. The problem is that most of the time, these waivers are poorly written and difficult to understand. And what if the gym (or one of its personal trainers) does something negligent? What if they knew a machine or a workout move had a reasonable chance of injuring someone and they did nothing to fix it or stop it from causing the injury?

In these types of situations, there is a chance the waiver is not worth the paper it is printed on. When you sign a waiver, you don’t give the gym or its employees or agents a blank check to injure or maim you. In the CNN report about rhabdomyolysis, healthy 33-year-olds were hospitalized after a single Spinning workout. In these cases, it’s likely the gym or a trainer has responsibility for causing an injury.

Philadelphia personal injury attorney Rand Spear explains, “It goes without saying that you should always chat with your doctor before you take up any kind of exercise. It’s a cliché, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t smart to do it. You can’t go from hardcore couch surfing to toughing it out on the weight machines without risking an injury. On the other hand, if your gym has broken equipment or a trainer or the gym’s policies put you at risk, you may be entitled to compensation.”

Why You Need a 30-Day Sugar Detox

New Jersey, 08/07/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Millions of Americans suffer from high blood pressure, obesity, and fatigue due to the diet that they put into their bodies. It’s unfortunate, but feeling lousy, achy, tired, and carrying extra weight has become the new normal for many people. If you are one of them, you may be suffering from a sugar addiction that is contributing to your ailments. It may be time for you to consider a 30-day detox from sugar.

A sugar detox may sound extreme, but the benefits that you will see and feel are worth the uncomfortable first few days. Not only will it help you physically by restoring balance to your blood sugar, reducing spikes of insulin, balancing your hormones, boosting your metabolism, and reducing inflammation, it will also improve your mood and self-image, and you will likely lose weight.

Sugar Addiction

Many people today eat diets that are high in sugar, and as many as 10% of Americans are true sugar addicts. While sugar addiction may not be on the same level as drug and alcohol addiction, there are many similarities. In fact, research shows that for the sugar addict, sugar affects the pleasure center of the brain and induces cravings that are similar in extent to those same symptoms in drug addicts.

For many people, one of the most concerning facts about sugar is just how much is added to our diets without us even realizing that it’s there. When we think of sugar, we think about cakes, cookies, and ice cream. But the reality is, it’s in many foods that don’t even taste sweet. – bread, sauces, salad dressings, and pasta. You may be eating sugar all day and not know it.

Even if you are not a true sugar addict, you will benefit from reducing the amount of sugar in your diet, or be doing a 30-day sugar detox. It will require that you read labels, eat whole foods, and stay away from prepackaged foods, but the results will be worth it.

How to Detox from Sugar

Getting the sugar out of your system requires that you go cold turkey for the first three days of the detox. This sounds daunting and you may wonder why it’s not recommended to just cut down on the amount of sugar you consume. The reason is simple, you would not ask a drug addict or alcoholic to just have a couple of pills or beers a day. For true addicts, this would be impossible. If they could moderate their use, they would already be doing it. The same is true for sugar addicts, and that’s why the first three days have to be sugar-free.

For the first three days, you should have no added sugar. That means no fruits, grains, dairy, starchy vegetables (corn, peas, potatoes, and squash), and alcohol. You can fill up on proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats.

A typical sugar-free day may look like this:

Breakfast – Three eggs, cooked any way you like them

Lunch – As much as six ounces of poultry, fish, or tofu, and a salad

Dinner – Same as lunch, but you can substitute steamed vegetables for the salad

Snacks – Nuts (1 oz. servings), hummus, vegetables

You will want to stay away from artificial sweeteners because they may make you store more fat and end up overeating. Stick to water, unsweetened tea, and black coffee.

Starting on the fourth day, you add one apple and one dairy food (full-fat and unsweetened) each day. You’ll find that after three days of no sugar, your taste has recalibrated and things that didn’t use to taste sweet now do. You can also add back in some of the higher sugar vegetables like carrots and peas, and have up to three glasses of wine for the week.

For week two, you add another serving of dairy, a serving of berries, and starchy vegetables like squash and yams.

Week three allows you to include grains (like oatmeal, quinoa, and barley), and additional fruit like grapes, tangerines or another citrus, and bananas, and an ounce of dark chocolate.

Week four begins the maintenance part of the plan. You can add two starches each day, and up to five glasses of wine per week.

By the end of the four weeks, your addiction to sugar should be broken and be eating healthy sugars, like fruit and whole grains should be satisfying enough that you no longer crave sugar-laden foods. Of course, once you complete the 30 days, having a small dessert or piece of birthday cake isn’t going to send you back into the throes of sugar addiction. Now is when moderation is possible because the addiction to sugar is broken.

Benefits and Risks of Sugar Detox

Doing a sugar detox can result in significant weight loss. Some people lose between five and 20 pounds in the first 30 days, depending on their starting weight and severity of their sugar addiction. People who detox from sugar also experience increased energy, fewer mood swings and blood sugar fluctuations, and have improvements in the appearance of their skin and brighter eyes.

The drawback of any detox is the discomfort you feel in the beginning. The first three days of a sugar detox can make you feel irritable, tired, and anxious because you are actually going through withdrawal. It’s important that you plan to start your detox at a time when you will be around supportive and understanding people who will help you through the challenge.

Doing a 30-day sugar detox will be helpful to nearly everyone – but if you are diabetic or pregnant it may not be right for you and you should check with your doctor before starting.

What Are The Most Common Distracted Driving Behaviors

Eberstein Witherite LLP 1800 Car Wreck Fort Worth, Fort Worth, TX , 08/07/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Although a majority of drivers think they can get away with distracted driving, it only takes one error to cause a catastrophic car accident.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has identified three major kinds of distracted driving, including: (1)

Visual Distraction – when a driver’s eyes are drawn away from the road, even if it’s only for a few seconds.
Manual Distraction – when a driver’s hands come off the wheel, often due to the fact that the driver is eating, applying makeup or talking on a mobile phone.
Cognitive Distraction – when a driver’s mind wanders, affecting concentration

In other words, any activity that takes your attention away from the road falls under the category of distracted driving. And when your focus is not on the road, it is much more difficult for you to make adjustments or take evasive action when something unexpected happens.

But it’s one thing to talk about the dangers of distracted driving, and quite another to see the dangers in live action.

That was the goal of recent major study of nearly 2,000 drivers, who agreed to allow researchers to videotape their behavior behind the wheel.

The results were eye opening, and could help government safety agencies develop better methods of educating the public about the dangers of distracted driving.

Distracted Driving Study Stats Sheds New Light

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute recently completed research analyzing 1,600 drivers whose vehicles were equipped with video cameras, sensors and radar for one to two years.

The distracted driving study sheds new light on how drivers behave behind the wheel on a daily basis.

One of the first things researchers noticed is that it took very little time for drivers in the study to become used to the video cameras in their vehicles.

But more importantly, the results were quite surprising, with 1,600 “crash events” occurring during the two years of the study, including cars hitting curbs, and personal injury accidents. (2)

Half of those crash events were “higher-severity” accidents, which are accidents that caused some type of injury.

And in those crashes, a staggering 50 percent were the result of some type of distracted driving.

In fact, the study found that the likelihood of a car accident doubled when drivers took their eyes off the road and used a handheld cell phone, were reading or writing, or using touch screen menus.”

Video cameras showed drivers engaged in many types of distracted driving activities such as turning the radio or searching for a playlist on their mobile devices.

What Happens When You Drive Distracted?

While it’s clear that many drivers lose focus on the road because of other activities, the question is: What happens when you drive distracted?

In other words, what goes on inside your mind that makes distracted driving so dangerous?

According to MLive.com, the notion that the brain can multi-task is not accurate. (3)

Most drivers believe that they can operate their vehicle and talk on the phone without any loss of focus, but research has shown that the brain is not equipped to perform two tasks simultaneously.

So instead of being able to accomplish two things equally well at the same time, the brain actually shuttles between those tasks, focusing exclusively on each task within that millisecond.

As a result, your brain may not be able to react in time to an unexpected occurrence on the road, robbing you of precious seconds to avert a car wreck.

So you have to stop thinking that your brain can handle multiple tasks at the same without a significant risk that something will go wrong.

“We know that distracted driving continues to be a major contributor of car crashes,” stated Dallas Personal Injury / Accident Attorney Amy Witherite, partner at Eberstein Witherite, LLP. “If more people could see the video studies of distracted drivers, it could really help drive home the fact that these behaviors we’ve come to accept as normal are actually very dangerous.”

What Is Your Car Accident Injury Claim Worth?

There were nearly 400,000 distracted driving injury accidents in 2015, so the problem continues to affect the wellbeing of drivers on the road. If you’ve suffered an injury caused by a distracted driver, you may be wondering what your car accident injury claim is worth.

In most instances, your claim will involve economic damages from loss of work and property damage, and pain and suffering for your emotional and physical distress.

What Is Sick Building Syndrome and Why Should You Care?

Riverdale, NJ, 08/07/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Understanding Sick Building Syndrome

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) as, “situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified.” (1)

SBS does not always originate from an entire building and can be localized to a particular area or even one room. The reason understanding SBS is so important is that a majority of adults spend a minimum of eight hours a day inside an office or work building, and most people in the U.S. are indoor for about 90 percent of the time that they are awake.

Sick Building Causes and Symptoms

Although SBS does not have one specific cause, researchers have found that a combination of factors may be responsible for this syndrome. These factors include:

Lack of proper ventilation – if a building is not adequately ventilated an insufficient amount of outdoor air is flowing through the building and contaminant levels remain high because they are not diluted.

Chemical pollutants –emissions from office equipment and other products such as cleaning materials can create a noxious environment, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified as significant contributors to adverse health.

Biological pollutants – this includes airborne bacteria, viruses, pollen, mite feces and pet dander. Standing water in buildings or wet surfaces can also create mold and mildew that compromises indoor air quality.

“The latest studies on Sick Building Syndrome has found that mold that growth in buildings can become airborne and produce mycotoxins that are easily inhalable or swallowed,” stated Kevin Wood, Camfil USA Vice President Sales & Marketing. “These mycotoxins can burrow deep into the lungs and respiratory tracts and cause serious ailments.”

Mycotoxins are poisonous compounds that are produced by the fungus. When ingested, they can weaken the immune system and irritate the nasal passages, worsening breathing ailments such as asthma.

People who have SBS will commonly report symptoms such as:

Headache

Dizziness

Eye, nose and throat irritation

Hacking cough

Skin irritation

Loss of concentration

Fatigue

Nausea

And according to the Environmental Illness Resource, it’s important to remember that these symptoms are only identified as SBS if they disappear shortly after a person leaves the building.(2)

Understanding the causes and symptoms of SBS, can not only help workers and building managers take steps to resolve the problem, but also drive home the importance of good indoor air quality in commercial buildings.

What Is Indoor Air Quality?

Most people are aware of outdoor air pollution, but fewer can answer the question: What is indoor air quality level at my home or work? The reason is that it’s much easier to see, smell and understand outdoor air quality, but more difficult to assess indoor air quality.

According to the EPA, indoor air quality, “refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.” (3)

Pollutants within a building can cause employees to miss work due to respiratory illnesses, which affects productivity and costs companies millions of dollars in lost manpower.

Sick Building Syndrome Treatments

If enough people working in a commercial building begin to show symptoms of SBS, building supervisors can implement several SBS treatments to alleviate the problem. First, they should inspect the building to ensure that there is no mold. Second, they should inspect the HVAC system to ensure that the ducts are clean. If the ducts are not clean, building supervisors should hire a professional to clean the ducts. Third, any chemicals housed in the building should be sealed and stored in well-ventilated areas.

One final SBS treatment is to ensure that dirty, old air filters are replaced with filters that have a published efficiency consistent with a high level of removal of dust, mold, pollen, and bacteria in an indoor facility. This is an essential step in controlling SBS and reducing the onset of adverse symptoms.
