Drug Addiction In Bodybuilding – The Risks Of Long-term Steroid Use

New Jersey, 06/29/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

When you think about someone who’s addicted to drugs, you probably picture someone

who doesn’t care about their health. It’s unlikely you think of a person who hits the gym, watches what they eat, and keeps a close eye on their physique.

Drug addicts aren’t supposed to care about those things, are they?

This is just one stereotype about drug addiction that is rarely grounded in reality. For example, individuals who use anabolic-androgenic steroids are often some of the most health-conscious people around. Bodybuilders and weightlifters pay close attention to their diet and fitness regimen.

Unfortunately, many are tempted to give nature a boost by taking steroids. And recent studies show that long-term steroid use can cause serious damage to the heart and arteries.

What Are Steroids?

Anabolic steroids are synthetic compounds of the male sex hormone testosterone. In some cases, doctors prescribe steroids to treat legitimate health conditions, such as muscle loss, cancer, and AIDS. Steroids are also used to correct hormonal imbalances.

However, steroids can also be abused. When athletes or bodybuilders use steroids illegally, they often take doses that are 10 to 100 times higher than those prescribed by physicians. Steroids can be injected, taken in pill form, or absorbed through the skin by applying lotions, gel, or patches.

Steroids don’t produce the “high” that other substances do, but they can be just as damaging to the body. They can also alter a person’s mood, causing them to become violent, aggressive, paranoid, or delusional. This is the “‘roid rage” that people sometimes reference when talking about a person who lashes out or acts irrationally after consuming steroids.

Heart and Artery Damage Following Steroid Use

The National Institute on Drug Abuse recently funded a new study that examined the physiological impact of long-term steroid use on the body.

The study, which analyzed male weightlifters between the ages of 34 and 54, revealed that long-term exposure to anabolic steroids is associated with reduced pumping performance in the heart and damage to the arteries. An astonishing 71 percent of the men studied had impairment in their heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently.

Drug addiction treatment often seems to focus on street drugs and prescription drugs. Steroids don’t often receive a spotlight. Because they don’t affect the levels of dopamine in the brain, they may not seem as addictive as other substances. However, steroids can be difficult to give up. If you’re struggling with steroid abuse, you deserve help like anyone else. There are ways to change the way you see your body. Take a positive step forward for your long-term health by seeking treatment.

Is the Automation Of The Criminal Justice System A Good Thing?

Dallas, Texas, 06/29/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Computers have become such an integral part of daily life that it’s hard to imagine life without them. It’s also hard to believe that just a few decades ago there was no email or internet.

Today, however, technology plays a major role in nearly every industry, including the criminal justice system. According to a New York Times report, computer systems and artificial intelligence have been integrated into every stage of the criminal process, including arrest, police investigations, evidence, sentencing, and parole. “Audio sensors generate gunshot alerts. Forensic analysts use probabilistic software programs to evaluate fingerprints, faces and DNA. Risk-assessment instruments help to determine who is incarcerated and for how long.”

Prison Tech Is Privately Owned

Technology often makes life easier, but is it always a good thing? As the report points out, part of the problem is that these technologies are manufactured by private companies. Because these companies are for-profit enterprises, they view the details behind their products as trade secrets. As a result, they are often reluctant — if not outright unwilling — to reveal data about the prisons and jails where their technology is in use.

In one case, a man in a New York state correctional facility was denied parole despite having a near-perfect rehabilitation record. The mistake was due to an error in the computer program used to administer parole. Fortunately, the man discovered the error on his own. But should it come down to inmates to identify flaws in the prison’s computer systems?

Tech Companies Deny Defense Access to Algorithms

In another case, a defendant in California was sentenced to life in prison without parole for several burglaries. He proclaimed his innocence throughout his trial. The prosecution based its case on DNA evidence obtained through a software program called TrueAllele that supposedly used algorithms to assess DNA collected at crime scenes.

When the defense counsel tried to gain access to the code behind the program, the judge denied it based on the company’s assertion that its source code was a protected trade secret. As many criminal justice advocates have pointed out, this has the potential to have a serious chilling effect on criminal defense. For example, if a breathalyzer machine is incorrectly calibrated, it can result in a wrongful conviction. Why shouldn’t the same hold true for a computer program? If the algorithms are flawed, innocent people could be sent to prison. As the report points out, “The law is designed to stop business competitors from stealing confidential commercial information, not to justify withholding information from the defense in criminal proceedings.”

How A Copyright Lawyer Can Protect Your Intellectual Property

Dallas, Texas, United States, 06/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Whether you’re looking to protect your intellectual property with a copyright or involved in an infringement dispute over who owns it, an experienced copyright lawyer can explain your legal rights and represent your interests.

What Is A Copyright?

A copyright is intellectual property (IP) for an original creative work (e.g. a book, software, movie, etc.).

Why is a copyright important?

The copyright owner has the virtually exclusive right (with a few exceptions such as fair use) to the work. This includes reproducing, performing, or creating derivative works (e.g. turning a novel into a screenplay or having it translated into another language).

However, copyrighted works are frequently licensed.

For example, a composer may license use of his music in exchange for royalties paid by the licensee.

Similarly, a playwright may license his work so that it can be performed in a theater.

Can An Idea Be Copyrighted?

It’s a common misconception that ideas are copyrightable. However, only the expression of those ideas are protected by U.S. copyright law.

The ideas expressed in your copyrighted work can generally be freely borrowed and used by others. This is why you see novels by different authors express the “hero’s journey” (e.g. JRR Tolkien’s Frodo and JK Rowling’s Harry Potter) and thousands of pop songs about a broken heart.

How Do You Get a Copyright?

When you create an original work in a tangible physical form (even briefly), the copyright arises.

For example, when you write an original creative blog post and publish it online, you can assert copyright ownership of it. You can even use the copyright symbol © or the word “Copyright” to note the post is your intellectual property.

Note that creativity is an essential element. For instance, an ascending list of the numbers 1 to 10 would probably lack sufficient creativity for copyright protection.

However, an original children’s song teaching the same ten numbers in order would be creative. Similarly, an original painting incorporating the numbers could be considered creative.

What Is Copyright Registration?

When you register your copyrighted work with the U.S. Copyright Office, you get additional legal protections under federal law. This includes many legal tools to make it easier to protect your intellectual property and collect damages if someone misuses your work. Although some creators register their own works, many rely upon qualified copyright attorneys to do these federal registrations correctly.

How Many Years Does A Copyright Protect Your Work?

Copyright terms vary considerably based upon a variety of factors (e.g. when published) that your copyright lawyer can explain to you when analyzing what you’ve created. As a general rule, new original works are protected in the U.S. for 70 years after the creator has passed away. On the other hand, if work was made for hire, the copyright will probably be for the lesser of 95 years from the date first published or 120 years from the date created.

4 Ways Alcohol Harms Your Body

New Jersey, 06/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Most people are well aware of the short-term effects of alcohol. It can make you disoriented, slower to react, and dehydrated. But alcohol harms your body in other ways that you may not necessarily notice right away. Long-term alcohol abuse can lead to an array of serious health problems.

If you’re struggling with an alcohol addiction, it’s important to understand that alcohol can have a lasting impact on your health. Here are just a few ways that alcohol can harm you.

Brain Damage

A great deal of research has been done on the impact of alcohol on the brain. Over time, alcohol destroys brain cells, which leads to permanent memory loss, and a form of encephalopathy (damage to the brain) that causes confusion, paralysis of the nerves in the eyes, and problems with muscle coordination. Eventually, these conditions are irreversible.

Brittle Bones

Alcohol can also do serious damage to the skeletal system, including increasing a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis. Chronic heavy drinking — even in young people — can lead to a heightened risk of brittle bones later in life. Alcohol inhibits the body’s ability to absorb calcium, which is critical for healthy bones. Women are especially vulnerable to the effects of alcohol on the bones.

A Weakened Immune System

Have you noticed that you’re more prone to catching colds when you’ve been drinking a lot? Do you come down with the flu every time you hit the bars with friends? This is because alcohol weakens the immune system — the body’s natural defenses to illness and disease. Excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to not only the liver disease but an inability to fight off even mild infections. This can lead to cascading health problems that result in serious illnesses.

Digestive Problems

You’ve probably seen commercials touting the benefits of yogurt for the digestive system. This is because the flora in the gut is quite complicated. When it’s healthy and balanced, a person can eat and drink regular meals without feeling bloated or sick. However, alcohol disrupts this balance, which can spill over to other organs and systems in the body. Alcohol hits the gastrointestinal tract first, and it can even impair the function of the muscles that separate the esophagus from the heart. Over time, many people who abuse alcohol develop painful acid reflux. Excessive alcohol consumption can even heighten a person’s risk of developing esophageal cancer.

iPhone’s Distracted Driving Mode

New York City, NY, 06/29/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving injured 391,000 people and killed 3,500 in 2015 alone. Distracted driving has become a serious epidemic on the roads — and it’s mostly due to the rise in smartphone ownership.

Overall smartphone ownership has reached 77 percent in the U.S., and about 92 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 and 29 report owning one.

Smartphones may be convenient, but they can be a serious source of distraction behind the wheel. Texts, emails, and notifications can be too tempting for a motorist to ignore. It takes just a few seconds to glance down and read a text or email. Unfortunately, that’s all it takes for someone to cause a fatal or catastrophic crash.

Many safety advocates have pointed out that smartphone manufacturers have the ability to force drivers to put their phones down and pay attention to the road. Now, Apple has done just that.

New Apple Operating System Features ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ Mode

In June 2017, Apple unveiled a host of new features that will be released with its latest operating system, iOS11. Among these features is a mode called Do Not Disturb While Driving (DNDWD).

The DNDWD feature is an expansion of the iPhone’s Do Not Disturb function. The feature can detect when the phone is in motion inside a vehicle and silence all alerts and notifications the phone receives. Instead of notifications, motorists will see only a black screen while their vehicle is in motion. The feature also allows drivers to set exceptions that allow notifications from specific individuals to breach the DNDWD mode.

When turned on, the feature will shut down a motorist’s phone. As Time points out, however, “…the feature isn’t perfect. An override switch meant to be used by passengers could just as easily be used by a motorist determined to text and drive. Humans are imperfect, after all, and will never stop making dangerous choices.”

In January 2017, Apple was named in a class action lawsuit alleging it has the ability to install a lockout feature on its phones but failed to do so. The lawsuit claims that the technology giant should be held accountable for distracted driving accidents caused by smartphone use. Similar lawsuits have been filed over Apple’s FaceTime app, which allows users to chat face to face through streaming video.

NYC Auto Accident Lawyer Discusses Distracted Driving Stats

New York City auto accident lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter states, “The CDC has released statistics showing that eight people are killed every day due to distracted driving. Many auto safety experts argue that the number is much higher. Any time you get behind the wheel, it’s important to put your phone down.”

If you’ve been injured by a distracted driver, speak to an experienced New York City auto accident lawyer about your case today.

Funding For Criminal Justice Reform Comes From An Unlikely Source

Dallas, Texas, 06/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Criminal justice reform has been identified as a top priority in the United States. Despite being home to just five percent of the world’s population, the U.S. has over 20 percent of the planet’s prison population. Between 1978 and 2014, the country’s prison population has ballooned by 408 percent.

It’s obvious that something needs to be done. For one art collector, the path to criminal justice reform lies in a famous Lichtenstein painting.

Major Painting Nets $165 Million for Criminal Justice Reform

According to an NPR report, art collector and philanthropist Agnes Gund recently sold Roy Lichtenstein’s 1962 painting Masterpiece for $165 million to collector Steve Cohen. The report states that Gund sold the painting specifically to raise money for “a fund that supports criminal justice reform and seeks to reduce mass incarceration in the United States.”

But Gund isn’t stopping there. She has also urged other art collectors to put pieces on the market for the same purpose. Other collectors have heeded the call and have pledged to sell works to support the cause.

For Gund, the need for reform is personal. The report goes on to state that six of her 12 grandchildren are African-American, and that she worries about their future in light of recent events, including the shooting of black teen Trayvon Martin in Florida.

Gund released a statement: “The criminal justice system in its current state — particularly in its treatment of people of color – is unfair and unjust.”

Stats on the U.S. Prison Population and Racial Disparity Among Prisoners

Currently, one in 110 Americans is imprisoned, and one in 35 adults in the U.S. is under some form of correctional control, whether it be jail or parole. According to stats from the NAACP, African-Americans account for nearly 1 million of the 2.3 million Americans in the prison population.

Together, African-Americans and Hispanics make up 58 percent of all prisoners. As of 2001, one in six black men in the United States had at some point been incarcerated. One in three black males in the U.S. can expect to be incarcerated at some point during their lifetime. Today, one in 100 African-American women are in prison. Additionally, African-Americans make up 26 percent of juvenile arrests, 44 percent of young people who are detained by police, and 46 percent of youth waived through to the adult criminal justice system. African-American juveniles are also admitted to state prisons at a rate of 58 percent.

Unlocking America states that if African-Americans and Hispanics had incarceration rates that were the same as white Americans, the U.S. prison population would automatically decrease by 50 percent.

#1800TruckWreck @EWLawyers On Summer Truck Accidents

Dallas, Texas, 06/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Although you might think that serious truck wrecks are more likely to occur in the winter months, the opposite is true. Summer is the deadliest time for semi-truck crashes.

As leading truck wreck attorneys, we know that the warm weather months are peak season for serious and deadly truck crashes. If you’re going to be on the road this summer, it’s important to be extra cautious around all traffic, especially trucks.

What Causes the Uptick in Crashes?

There are several reasons why the summer means more truck accidents. Extra road construction, more people on the road, an increase in tire blowouts, and more distracted drivers means that summer is a dangerous time to drive.  Watch our video on commercial trucking regulations.

Increase in Construction – When the weather heats up, the orange construction barrels come out. In many parts of the country, the only time road repair crews can work is during the summer. Even in the south, severe weather such as heavy rain and ice can stop crews from working on much-needed road repairs. If you approach road construction, slow your speed and be vigilant about keeping an eye on the drivers and trucks around you.
Road Trips – Summer is primetime for road trips, which means there are more cars on the road. Texas is a big state with a lot of tourist attractions, including major metropolitan cities and miles of beautiful coastline. Tourists flock to the Lone Star State, and they’re not always cautious when they drive.
Tire Blowouts – Semi-truck tires are very expensive. To save money, truckers and carrier companies retread their tires. This involves stripping off the worn outer layers and gluing new treads to the inner part of the tire. When the tire heats up and cools down — as it does in hot summer weather — the glued portion can separate from the inner portion. This can lead to dangerous blowouts. The popular Discovery Channel show MythBusters even tested whether a tire blowout could be deadly. Their experiments revealed that the velocity of an exploding tire is fast enough to decapitate a test dummy.
Distracted Drivers – Unfortunately, distracted drivers are a threat on the road any time of year. In the summer, however, some drivers and truckers might be more inclined to reach for their phone for the simple fact that they don’t have to drive in snow or icy weather. Clear roads and sunny skies can trick motorists and truckers alike into thinking it’s smooth sailing (or driving) ahead. The reality is that any distraction behind the wheel can lead to a serious or deadly truck crash.

Texas Truck Wreck Lawyer Discusses Summer Driving

Texas truck accident attorney Amy Witherite states: “As you hit the roads this summer, pay close attention to the motorists and truckers around you. Although you can’t control how other people drive, you can take steps to make sure you drive as safely as possible. This lowers your risk of being involved in a truck accident.”

If you have been injured in a truck accident, contact an experienced Texas truck crash lawyer as soon as possible. You have important rights. Protect them by speaking to a legal team with the experience and knowledge to get you the compensation you deserve.

Inmates With Mental Illnesses Don’t Get The Treatment They Need

Dallas, Texas, 06/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Are U.S. prisons criminalizing the mentally ill? That’s what a large number of criminal justice advocacy groups have stated — and their assertions are definitely backed up by the data.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 73 percent of the female inmates in state prisons and 55 percent of men suffer with some type of mental health illness. In federal prisons, 61 percent of women and 44 percent of men have a mental health problem. At the local level, 75 percent of women and 63 percent of men in jails have a mental illness.

These mental health problems range from depression and bipolar disorder to trauma-related disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder.

A PBS report states, “There are now three times more people with serious mental illness incarcerated in the United States than in hospitals, and the types of behavioral and mental health problems among inmates are becoming more severe.”

Why Do So Many Prisoners Have Mental Illnesses?

Part of the reason the nation’s prisons and jails have such high numbers of inmates with mental health issues is the widespread closure of psychiatric hospitals throughout the 1960s. Sadly, even remaining mental health facilities have been hit hard by closures in recent years. In 2016, a counseling center that served 10,000 patients in the Chicago area closed.

When individuals have nowhere to turn for treatment, they often end up on the wrong side of the law. Furthermore, they are more likely to be arrested at some point down the road after their release. For example, in Ohio, among 132 mental health patients discharged from state hospitals, 17 percent were arrested within just six months of their release. In 2006, the federal government reported that one in six prisoners in state prisons and one in four in local jails suffered with psychosis.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also reports that about 2 million people with mental illness are booked into jails every year. And once they are released, they often have no access to treatment or even basic healthcare. “At least 83% of jail inmates with a mental illness did not have access to needed treatment.”

Additionally, jailing inmates with mental illness consumes resources and results in these individuals remaining in jail longer than those without a mental illness. NAMI points out that they are also “at risk of victimization and often their mental health conditions get worse.”

If you or a loved one has been arrested or is facing prosecution, and you believe that a mental health crisis is at play, it’s important to contact an experienced Texas criminal defense lawyer right away. Resources are available to help you. Protect yourself by speaking to a knowledgeable criminal defense lawyer about your case.

How To Support A Loved One Who Is Going Through Addiction

New Jersey, 06/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Addiction takes a toll on both the addict and the people around them. If your spouse, child, or loved one is suffering from an alcohol or drug addiction disorder, you know firsthand how difficult it can be to offer support without losing hope — or your sanity.

It may be tempting to give up, but it’s important to continue offering support in any way you can. Here are several ways to remain supportive as your loved one struggles to recover.

Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up about your addiction

In some cases, family members and friends of addicts are afraid to confront them. They may worry that raising the issue of addiction will drive their loved one away or cause them to become angry and break ties. This is a reasonable fear, but it’s important to recognize that your voice of reason may be the only thing capable of getting through to the person you love. Of course, any time you plan to confront an addict or stage an intervention, it’s best to work with experienced behavioral health specialists who can give you tips for approaching the confrontation or intervention in a positive, structured way rather than an antagonistic one.

Don’t Lose Hope about your substance abuse

It’s very easy to become frustrated and lose hope when you’re dealing with someone who insists on indulging in self-destructive behavior. However, persistence can pay off. The best case scenario is that it rubs off on your loved one. If they see that you’re unwilling to give up on them, they’re more likely to refuse to give up on the hope of a long-term recovery.

Don’t Neglect Your Own Need for Support

Caregiver fatigue or burnout is a very real problem. If you neglect to look after your own needs and mental health, you could end up dealing with serious emotional, mental, and physical consequences. Caregiver burnout can even lead to major health problems, such as heart disease and stroke. Take time to get the support you need — whether it’s talking to a friend, physician, or even a professional counselor — any time you feel like your efforts to support your loved one are taking a toll on you.

Educate Yourself about substance abuse options

Accident Lawyer Discusses Government Plan To Privatize Air Traffic Control

New York City, NY, 06/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Should the country’s air traffic control towers be controlled by the private sector? That’s the question buzzing around Washington lately, after the current administration introduced plans to convert the nation’s government-run air traffic control system to a private system.

In essence, the plan would cease FAA oversight over the tracking and guiding of airplanes and put it in the hands of a private, nonprofit corporation created specifically to manage the nation’s air travel.

For the flying public, the issue isn’t so much one of politics as it is one of safety. Simply put: Will this plan make the skies safer, or does it have the potential to lead to disaster?

Pros and Cons of Private Air Traffic Control

Aviation safety experts spoke to the Washington Post about the potential pros and cons of a privately-run air traffic control system.

The U.S. has the largest and most complex air traffic control system on the planet. It also has the best safety record for commercial air travel.

According to media reports, the transfer would involve shifting responsibility for about 300 airport towers, 35,000 workers, 14,000 controllers, and 6,000 technicians to a private company.

Proponents of the change point out that Canada has a privately-run air traffic control system and is one of the safest places in the world to fly. However, Canada’s system is the only fully private air traffic control system in the world. Other countries with semi-private systems have more of a hybrid private-and-state system, with quasi-governmental entities in charge of air traffic control.

Critics of the proposal say it opens the door for the big airlines to have an unfair seat at the board table, which could drive up fees and lower the quality of service for passengers. They also worry that a private corporation might place profits above safety.

However, supporters say that the FAA would still maintain safety oversight even if the system switched to private control. They also argue that the FAA’s procurement process is bogged down by government red tape that makes the acquisition of new planes and technology exceedingly slow.

As a cautionary tale, some have pointed to the privatization of ambulance and EMS services. In recent years, many communities have attempted to cut costs by switching from municipal EMS services staffed by government employees to private ambulances and first responders. The results haven’t always been good, and in some cases they’ve been fatal.

NYC Airline Accident Lawyer on the Importance of Airline Safety

Airline lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter states, “Politics should never come before airline passenger safety. It remains to be seen whether Congress will approve an air traffic control privatization bill. Similar legislation has been introduced several times in past decades to no avail. Whatever happens, the safety of passengers must be the first priority.”

If you’ve been injured in an airline accident, or you have lost someone you love in an aviation accident, speak to a New York City airline accident lawyer as soon as possible.
