Summit Detox Treatment Center NJ Discusses Detox And Recovery From Suboxone

New Jersey, 05/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

When you think of addiction, likely what comes to mind is either alcohol or illicit drugs like cocaine or heroin. But, addiction to prescription drugs is becoming more and more common. Painkillers like OxyContin and Percocet, and benzodiazepines like Xanax and Valium are the most commonly abused prescription medications. Unfortunately, when you become addicted to one prescription drug it can easily lead to addiction to others – especially if you are being treated for your original addiction with medication. That is why it is important to choose an addiction treatment center that offers medically supervised detox like Serenity at Summit.

Suboxone is one example of a prescription medication that sometimes feeds off other addictions. It’s used to treat people who are addicted to opioids like heroin and prescriptions painkillers. It’s known as a replacement drug because it is given to substance drug abusers to help them break their addictions to opioids. Unfortunately though, you can become addicted to Suboxone as well. If you are addicted to Suboxone, it’s important that you be treated for it, along with your original addiction.

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone is the brand name for the combination of buprenorphine and naloxone. The combination works together in that buprenorphine is an opioid drug, and naloxone is designed to block its narcotic effects. That means that when you take Suboxone, you receive the same physical benefits of using an opioid – pain relief, anxiety, insomnia, etc. – but without getting the high that opioids alone provide.

Theory dictates that this should prevent opioid abuse because the user doesn’t get the euphoric high any longer. However, Suboxone is often overused for other reasons. Perhaps you might want a better night’s sleep or your pain level is extreme.

Suboxone is prescribed in tablet form or in a sublingual strip (film that dissolves under the tongue). Patients are not to crush or inject Suboxone, and they have to be tested periodically to make sure there are no negative effects on liver function. They are also supposed to wear medical alert jewelry in case of an accidental overdose or other emergency.

Suboxone Complications and Side Effects

Suboxone shouldn’t be combined with other drugs or alcohol, as there can be dangerous interactions. If you take Suboxone, you should do so only as prescribed, and to prevent dependency, you should always dispose of any leftover pills or strips. If you miss a dose, you should alert your doctor. It’s not always a problem, but it can be.

Suboxone, and a variant, Subutex, should be administered by medical professionals whenever possible as they are potentially dangerous medications. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved their use for the treatment of opioid addiction, but as is true for all drug treatment medications having personnel with proper medical credentials is essential in minimizing the inherent risks associated with most types of prescription medications used to treat drug abuse disorders.

The list of side effects for Suboxone is a long one. Some are common and are found with many prescription medications. However, others can be potentially dangerous. One such side effect is drowsiness. When you take Suboxone you can become extremely drowsy, your breathing rate can become dangerously slow, which can lead to respiratory distress and other life-threatening conditions – especially if you are taking other medications that slow your breathing. Having someone with the proper medical knowledge who can assess all of the medications that can cause these adverse side effects is important before being admitted to the detox facility and this should be done at the initial assessment interview.

Stomach issues like nausea and vomiting are also common side effects of Suboxone. These symptoms can be similar to withdrawal symptoms, even if you are taking Suboxone regularly. Additionally, many people experience constipation, diarrhea, and strangely colored stools, along with other gastrointestinal ailments. The stomach issues can quickly lead to malnutrition and weakness.

Other side effects of Suboxone are also similar to withdrawal symptoms, including shaking, sweating, body aches, and cramps. If sublingual strips are being used, there may be swelling and pain of the tongue, along with redness in the mouth. Sometimes swelling of the extremities also occurs.

How Do You Know If You’re Addicted to Suboxone?

Because of the many side effects of Suboxone, identifying addiction isn’t always easy. Unfortunately, many people don’t seek help for addiction to Suboxone until they have overdosed on the drug.

Suboxone overdose symptoms include:

Cold, clammy skin
Flaccidity of muscles
Lowered heart rate
Lowered blood pressure
Circulation issues
Respiratory issues or slow, shallow breathing

It’s important to seek medical help immediately if you suspect that you are overdosing on Suboxone.

Detox and Recovery from Suboxone Addiction

Detoxing from Suboxone may seem harder because it was a drug that was supposed to be helping you end another addiction. During detox, you will likely experience the same types of withdrawal symptoms as before – anxiety, panic, insomnia, and depression. That’s why it’s important to go to a drug detox facility for this part of your recovery.

Withdrawal from Suboxone (and Subutex) may look a little bit different from other withdrawals. Many patients think that the initial drop in endorphins – what causes the anxiety, panic, and depression – is the beginning of withdrawal symptoms. However, true withdrawal doesn’t set in until about 2-3 days and it can last for a few weeks.

You will experience the worst of the Suboxone withdrawals in the first 72 hours after initial withdrawal. Those symptoms include:

Headaches
Fever and chills
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea
Sweating
Anxiety
Mood swings
Agitation and irritability
Insomnia

The physical symptoms will decrease during the first week, but the psychological aspects of withdrawal, like mood swings and anxiety, are likely to hang on for a few weeks. You may experience cravings throughout the process.

After Suboxone Detox

After you have detoxed from Suboxone, you should transition into an additional treatment, either a residential or a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Inpatient drug rehab is your best bet for achieving long-lasting recovery. Simply ridding your body of Suboxone isn’t usually enough to keep a person clean and sober, and the likelihood of returning to an original addiction is high. In residential rehab you will receive education, therapy, relapse prevention, and many other tools that you need to make your recovery a success. If it’s not possible to do this because of work or other issues then an alternative is to enter into intensive outpatient program like PHP. Police Violence Is Not Just An American Problem

Dallas, 05/31/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Police violence and misconduct is well-documented in the United States. It’s an issue that receives a lot of media attention — sometimes so much so that it’s easy to wonder if other countries experience such serious social and criminal justice issues.

According to a recent article, police violence occurs in other countries, too. In Germany, for example, there are currently an average of 10 fatal police shootings every year. The article states that the majority of the victims were suffering from mental health problems at the time of their death.

Police Violence and Misconduct Abroad

The article states that countries like Germany have a tendency to overlook police violence within their own borders because it is a drop in the bucket compared to the stats for police brutality and misconduct in the U.S.

For example, police in the U.S. kill more people in a week than police in Germany do in an entire year.

However, it’s interesting — and important — to take a look at the types of people who are killed by police officers both domestically and abroad.

Journalists in Germany analyzed police killings from 1990 to the present day. Their findings reveal that about half of all victims of police shootings were experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting.

A professor at a German police academy said these killings are largely due to a lack of training among police forces. Because police aren’t equipped to deal with someone experiencing a mental health issue, they react the only way they know how to — by neutralizing a perceived threat.

As the article states, “…police could avoid this by enlisting psychiatrists, counselors and others who are trained to work with people suffering emotional or psychological breakdowns for emergency situations, rather than attempting to handle it themselves.”

Mental Health Training Is Crucial for Police Forces

A CNN report states that an analysis of 462 police shootings in the U.S. revealed that one-fourth involved someone with a mental illness.

Although most were armed, the majority of cases involved an incident in which the police were not responding to a crime. Instead, a loved one, friend, or neighbor had called 911 to obtain help for the person. In more than 50 of the cases, the person was suicidal.

The article goes on to state that many police departments around the country now require their officers to participate in “crisis intervention team” (CIT) training, which focuses on deescalating a mental health crisis with a verbal approach rather than a threatening one. There are about 2,800 CIT programs nationwide, however, this represents just 15 percent of police departments across the country.

San Antonio’s police department has a full-time CIT unit. According to one member of the unit, the training has allowed the department to intervene and provide help to individuals experiencing a mental or emotional breakdown. Instead of sending uniformed officers in a patrol car, the officers in the CIT unit wear plain clothes and drive regular vehicles. One member of the department says that even seemingly little things like this can go a long way toward deescalating conflict.

3 Benefits Of Social In Your Content Marketing Strategy

Dallas, Texas, United States, 05/31/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The best content won’t generate the marketing results you want if it isn’t shareable. This is why it’s important to make your content marketing more social says Qamar Zaman CEO of Submit Press Release 123.  We stand for Keep it simple and Shareable Content.

While content is certainly king, you could say that social media is its queen. As cheesy as it sounds, this pretty much encapsulates the current landscape of digital marketing.

Content marketing is arguably the fastest growing niche in all of digital marketing. According to the Content Marketing Institute’s 7th Annual B2B Content Marketing Benchmarks, Budgets, and Trends—North America report, 89 percent of B2B Marketers use content marketing. This in itself isn’t surprising, but what’s more telling is how “62% (are) reporting that their organizations are much more or somewhat more successful with their overall content marketing approach compared with one year ago.”

With more marketers getting better results, it’s safe to say other organizations will increase their investments in producing their own content. In fact, CMI’s annual report notes that of the 11 percent who are content nonusers, “52% say they plan to launch a content marketing effort within 12 months.”

But content, however, is just half of the equation, which is where social media comes in. Compared to general content marketing, social media is about promotion and outreach. It’s a separate platform, sure, but one that should go hand in hand with your content marketing efforts.

Below are 3 ways to do just that.

Make Sure Your Content Oozes Authority and Expertise

If there’s one thing most marketers will tell you about content marketing, it’s that it’s all about creating original and unique content. These days—everyone knows content should be original and unique.

It’s no longer enough for your content to meet these basic requirements. What you should focus on is making sure your content speaks volumes of your brand’s authority and expertise.

For example, content on legal blogs should contain insights your readers will only get from you. To do this, you can publish case studies with unique data and findings, which your followers will ultimately find valuable, not to mention shareable.

Rand Fishkin of Inbound.org (2) calls this “10x Content,” a concept fueled by “…the idea that there’s just so much in our streams and standing out is so hard, we can’t just say, “Hey, I want to be as good as the top 10 people in the search results for this particular keyword term or phrase.” We have to say, “How can I create something 10 times better than what any of these folks are currently doing?”

To put it simply, you need to create content that commands attention and respect from readers due to the sheer number of expert-level insights and actionable information it offers.

Use Images Optimized for Social Media Sites

Images are a great way to break up walls of text in your content assets—pretty much every marketer out there knows this. You could be using stock images to kill the monotony of a blog post or landing page content, adding visual elements where they’re needed most.

However, it’s not enough to put images in your content, not if you want to maximize your social media engagement. When posting on Facebook and Twitter, your site can be enabled to display “cards” showing the images within your content. So, it’s important to optimize images according to the dimensions of these cards, or whatever platform they’re posted on. This is especially important for sites like Pinterest and Instagram, which rely on images to capture user interest.

Note that images are just one part of the equation to using these social features. You can look up how to use social media meta tags, which are essentially lines of code that let Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media platform, pull the proper images from your content when it’s posted on the social network.

As Steve Shaw points out in a write-up for vWriter (3), “When you use the right image, descriptive text, and so on for a sponsored update on social, you can improve engagement (including click-throughs) by often 100s of percent.”

Incentivize Social Media Sharing

Reward strategies are about as traditional as any other marketing technique out there, and thankfully, they still work with content marketing and social media.

For starters, you can hold contests to encourage users to share your content on Facebook or retweet a post on Twitter. You can also offer exclusive access to a virtual product (think webinars, podcasts, e-books) in exchange for a social media conversion—a share, like, or follow perhaps?

You can even offer special discounted rates to encourage customers to leave genuine reviews on your Facebook business page. The possibilities depend on how creative you want to be.

Conclusion

If there’s one thing these pointers prove, it’s that content marketing and social media were practically made for each other. Content offers the foundation for generating awareness and leads, while social media serves as the platform for outreach and promotions.

Baseball And Beer Endanger Drivers Warns Boca Car Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 05/31/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Baseball is America’s pastime and there’s plenty to choose from in South Florida, from the Miami Marlins to the minor leagues and college teams. Thanks to smart marketing and teams eager to make more money at the concession stand beer and baseball are in a tight embrace. Sometimes fans enjoy too much beer with the game they’re watching and pose a hazard to others when they drive home says Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne.

The number of drunken fans may startle even long time season ticket holders. A study by University of Minnesota researchers estimates that one in every 12 fans leaving major sporting events is intoxicated, reports U.S. News & World Report.

If 20,000 people attend a Marlins game, if this figure is accurate, nearly 1,700 people leave the stadium drunk. If only a third drive from Marlins Ballpark more than 500 intoxicated drivers will be hitting the road after a game.

When the NFL season starts if 65,000 attend a Dolphins game there could be about 5,400 drunk fans there and thousands of drunk drivers leaving the game.

Researchers measured the blood alcohol content (BAC) of 382 adults following 13 baseball games and three football games and found that 8% of fans surveyed had a BAC of 0.08 or higher, the legal intoxication limit. Those who pre-gamed at tailgate parties were 14 times more likely to leave the game drunk. A quarter of the tailgaters surveyed admitted to drinking five or more alcoholic beverages. Fans younger than 35 were nine times more likely to be drunk than other attendees.

Study results are from testing fans leaving sporting events between May and October 2006. They were asked to participate with an anonymous breathalyzer test and a five-minute verbal survey assessing their alcohol consumption levels before and during the game. There were an average of twenty volunteers after each game, 58% of them were men and about 55% were between the age of 21 and 35.

Study author Darin Erickson, an assistant professor of epidemiology and community health at University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health said it was challenging to get fans to cooperate not just because some may have wanted to hide their blood alcohol level but also because fans just want to beat the traffic and drive home.

Some experts say the 8% estimate is probably on the low side but the study shows how serious the problem is. “The study reminds us that heavy drinking at sporting events occurs and that this likely contributes to DWI accidents and injuries or even deaths,” said Dr. James C. Garbutt, medical director of the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

If you or a loved one suffered an injury caused by a drunk driver, contact Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. Hospital Air Quality Matters – Learn Data from Camfil Report

Riverdale, NJ, 05/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

As a place of healing and recovery, hospital air quality is even more important than the air quality at commercial offices and shopping malls. The purpose of a hospital is to return people to good health, and an essential aspect of this process is ensuring that airborne pollutants do not make existing conditions worse.

“Well we know from our research that many hospitals are struggling with their budgets,” stated Dave Blackwell , Healthcare Business Segment Manager. “As a result, these facilities are installing low-cost air filters that are not providing the kind of return-on-investment that is ideal, and worse yet, these filters are not eliminating the kind of pollutants that are a clear and present danger to patients and hospital workers. This issue was serious enough that ASHRAE Standard 52.2 was recently amended to require manufacturers to test all MERV rated air filters, including hospital air filters. Simply put, hospitals should demand ASHRAE test reports be supplied by their supplier.

Main Challenges to Hospital Air Quality

The biggest reason that hospitals are forced to spend more on air quality is that these facilities face greater pollutant challenges than other enclosed spaces.

Per an article on the Consulting-Specifying Engineer website, (1) patients and hospital workers are two significant factors in hospital air quality.

Because hospitals are filled with patients who have a variety of ailments, there is a much higher likelihood that some of these patients can release infectious contaminants that can impact indoor air quality.

For example, per an article in Healthline, (2) a recent study by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology that was published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics found that coughs and sneezes can travel 200 times further than what scientists had thought.

Most scientists agreed that the cloud of infectious pollutants in a cough could travel 200 feet, but the new study found that “droplets 100 micrometers in diameter can travel five times farther than previously estimated, that droplets 10 micrometers in diameter can travel 200 times farther, and that droplets less than 50 micrometers in size can remain airborne long enough to reach ceiling ventilation units.”

The study was important in terms of understanding how airborne pollutants within a hospital can compromise air quality and lead to infectious outbreaks.

Lydia Bourouiba, the author of the study and an Assistant Professor at MIT’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering stated:

“This can all help target and improve mitigations strategies such as spacing between patients in hospitals, air ventilation and filtration in confined spaces.”

But for medical officials to implement an effective air filtration strategy, they must have sufficient resources, which more often than not, is all about money.

Budgeting Effects on Hospital Air Quality

There’s been a lot of news lately about the number of public hospitals that are facing extreme state budget cuts and changes in how Medicaid reimburses them for treating patients.

And while this may seem tangential to hospital air quality, it drives at the heart of the funding crises that has forced many health care officials to use lower-cost air filters that do not have the capacity to eliminate the most harmful particulates that can affect patient and worker health.

In addition, many hospitals are burdened by the amount of money they have to spend on patients who are admitted with respiratory illnesses directly tied to air pollution.

But a recent study published on the Rand Corporation website (3) has found that insurance companies such as Medicare and hospitals could actually reduce their spending on acute care if they focused on reducing the overall level of air pollution.

The study tracked the number of pollution related hospital events at five California hospitals from 2005 to 2007, and determined that both hospitals and health care insurers would have saved significant money on caring for patients with pollution-related ailments if they had helped the state meet federal clean air standards.

Per the article:

“Meeting federal clean air standards would have prevented an estimated 29,808 hospital admissions and ER visits throughout California…Nearly three-quarters of the potentially prevented events are attributable to reductions in ambient levels of fine particulate matter, that is, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to 2.5 micrometers [PM 2.5].”

Translated into raw numbers, the failure to meet clean air standards cost health care insurers $193,100,184 during the two-year time-period of the study.

That means that improved air quality would have eliminated nearly $194 million in health care spending, not just for insurers, but also for the hospitals that were burdened with patients in need of acute care for these pollution-related illnesses.

And while this is just one study on the problem, it’s clear that any push to reduce outdoor pollution will have a positive net effect on indoor air quality at many hospitals, thereby reducing expenses and helping to focus more resources on air filtration.

And speaking of saving money………Energy efficient, long –life air filters can reduce energy spend for your hospital’s HVAC system and cut installation labor costs by 2-3 times. Most hospitals don’t realize that high quality air filters can save more than they cost.

Beware Of Trailers This Summer Warns Philadelphia Car Accident Lawyer Rand Spear

Philadelphia, PA, USA, 05/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The trailers you see just aren’t of the tractor-trailer variety. As the weather warms, more and more people will be towing campers, boats and horse trailers. If improperly driven, equipped or poorly maintained these trailers can pose a deadly threat on our highways and streets. Philadelphia car accident lawyer Rand Spear says drivers need to be wary of these vehicles and be prepared in case the unexpected happens.

Causes of towing accidents include overloading the camper or trailer, the towing vehicle isn’t powerful enough to safely tow it, tires burst because they haven’t been inflated or replaced as needed and poor driving technique. Other causes can include jackknifing when braking, the trailer swaying, poorly matched equipment and unbalanced loads. The United Kingdom’s Highway Agency has these suggestions to avoid these problems for anyone towing something,

Do a final maintenance check before your trip, especially if what you’re towing hasn’t moved all year,

Check the vehicle and trailer tires (including the spares) to make sure they’re in safe condition and properly inflated,

Make sure the loads in the towed and towing vehicles are secure, that the weight is evenly distributed and not excessive,

Be aware that driving with a trailer is different than just driving the vehicle, especially the longer braking distances and slower acceleration,

Use extended mirrors if you’re towing a wider trailer to make sure you have clear and sufficient visibility of the trailer and of other vehicles on the road, and

If you need to pull over in an emergency make sure you have enough space to safely do so.

GMC has these safety tips for towers,

Learn the towing capacity of your vehicle and make sure it’s capable of handling the weight of what you’re towing. If you exceed the towing limit it can result in dangerous handling, insufficient braking or serious vehicle damage. You should also make sure your trailer hitch is capable of handling your trailer’s loaded weight.

If you’re carrying extra passengers or cargo, factor in the trailer and make sure you’re not asking your vehicle to transport too much weight. Look at the gross vehicle weight (GVW) and the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) ratings and ensure your vehicle doesn’t exceed them.

Check your trailer lights. Make sure the tail lights and marker lamps on your trailer function. Without them other drivers will have a hard time seeing your trailer, especially at night.

Check your trailer’s brakes. Smaller, lighter trailers may not need brakes but campers and heavier trailers, or those designed to carry heavier loads like boats, normally incorporate a trailer brake system. Make sure the emergency “breakaway” cable is attached to your vehicle. If the trailer disconnects from the hitch, it’s designed to trigger the trailer brakes to quickly bring it to a stop.

If you’ll be towing anything this summer, take these steps to make sure that you, your passengers and everyone else on the road gets to their destination safely. If you or a loved one were injured in an accident because a driver didn’t do the right things and negligently drove his or her vehicle and trailer, don’t wait to speak to a personal injury lawyer about your case. The Link Between Commercial Truck Driving And Mental Health

Dallas, 05/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

You can run into many issues on the road. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is only now starting to tackle the issue of the link between commercial truck driving and mental health. While you may be wondering why that is a big issue, the fact is that truck drivers face a number of challenges that can affect how they perform behind the wheel and that affects other motorists on the road.

“I think you’re starting to see more focus on the mental and physical well being of commercial truck drivers,” stated Dallas Truck Wreck Attorney Amy Witherite of the personal injury firm of Eberstein Witherite, LLP. “Commercial truck drivers are placed under significant stress, because they are constantly worried about making delivery times, they are subjected to physical strain and they spend hours upon hours alone in the cab of a truck. We really need to pay attention to their needs, so we can help their mental outlook and help to lower the number of truck accidents.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ lays out in the Occupational Outlook Handbook that commercial truck drivers often operate their vehicles for 14 hours a day, with 11 hours of actual driving and three hours of safety inspections and paperwork.

Because truck drivers are paid per-mile, and not per hour, every minute they spend idling in traffic or waiting at a shipping dock for workers to load goods is a minute in which they are not paid.

As a result, some truck drivers will lie in their logbooks and claim that they were resting, when they were actually on the road, desperate to reach their destination because of a delay.

PTSD and Truck Drivers

One of the most difficult aspects of commercial truck driving occurs after a driver has been involved in an accident. In an article published by The Atlantic, they spoke with drivers that were mentally affected by a truck wreck.

“Being in a wreck –– or even seeing one –– can cause enough stress and anxiety to become a diagnosable mental illness, like acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And with jobs that keep them away from their communities for such long stretches of time, many truckers lack the social support that could otherwise help them cope,” one driver stated.

Too often, social media platforms are the only place where they can trade stories and vent their frustrations with people who can understand exactly what they are talking about. This is especially helpful after truck drivers have witnessed an accident that shakes them up, because it is a safe forum for them to express their fears without being judged.

Drivers describe in detail the combination of exhaustion, the mental stress of ensuring that a delivery schedule is met and the anxiety of witnessing an accident or being involved in an accident that can cause PTSD in some commercial truck drivers.

PTSD is often diagnosed in soldiers returning from battle, but health care experts have also identified PTSD in some professions like commercial truck driving. Common PTSD symptoms include panic attacks, lack of focus and sleep difficulties, which echo what drivers described on social media channels.

Perhaps a truck driver who goes by the moniker ‘Maddog Trucker,’ says it best on his trucking blog:

“The sad reality some truckers have witnessed, and live with, is the screams they hear every night in [their] nightmares,” he writes. “Those screams are from a young child much like your own, pulled from the wreckage beside her dead mother killed by an ignorant trucker that couldn’t stop in time and crashed. No freight is worth your life and regardless of any situation, it’s not worth going home in a body bag.”

Getting You Back On Your Feet

“From personal experience, I know how emotional and devastating it is to be hurt in a truck wreck,” stated Amy Witherite. “That’s why our firm treats our clients like family members and takes care of the person like they are one of our own. We know getting compensation for our clients is very important, but most important is restoring your body and spirit, and that’s what we do best.”

What Is Obstruction Of Justice?

Dallas, TX, USA, 05/30/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

You can’t turn on the news these days without hearing something about President Trump and the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Whatever your political leanings, it can be unsettling to hear people talk about high-ranking officials, including the president, interfering with a criminal investigation.

The media has tossed around phrases like “obstruction of justice,” but what does this mean, exactly? Here’s a brief overview of obstruction of justice and what could happen if you’re charged with it.

Obstruction of Justice Defined

As the New York Times points out in their article, “What is Obstruction of Justice? An Often Murky Crime Explained,” obstruction of justice is something of a “murky” crime. This is because there are several federal statutes that address it.

Furthermore, not all behaviors that constitute obstruction of justice are clear-cut or concrete. In many cases, it’s up to prosecutors to prove that an individual’s actions or behavior were intended to interfere with, obstruct, or quell an investigation or criminal proceeding.

For example, obstruction of justice can be definitive in certain cases — destroying evidence like recordings (as Nixon did in the Watergate Scandal) or killing a witness. These are clear and obvious examples of someone willfully and intentionally getting in the way of the criminal justice system for their own benefit.

In other cases, however, things are less black and white. In the Comey firing case, many have pointed out that the president has the discretion and authority to hire and fire government officials. It’s part of the job description.

The issue boils down to what motivated the firing. As the article states, “Obstruction of justice cases often come down to whether prosecutors can prove defendants’ mental state when they committed the act…” In other words, prosecutors must find evidence of a specific intention to impede a criminal investigation or other proceeding.

This means that a person — whether a president or a regular citizen — can do something that’s perfectly legal, but if they undertake the action with the intent to interfere with the law, they can be charged with obstruction of justice.

What If You Are Charged with Obstruction of Justice?

Obstruction of justice is a charge that’s usually partnered with a list of other charges. However, in some cases prosecutors charge an individual with obstruction of justice if they don’t have enough evidence to file charges for other crimes. In either case, it’s imperative to work with an experienced criminal defense lawyer if you’re facing an obstruction of justice charge. The penalties for a conviction are serious and could cost you your freedom.

Obstruction of justice is a serious charge, but it’s also a “murky” one, which means prosecutors have a tough job. If there are holes in their case, an experienced federal criminal defense lawyer can find them.

Serenity at Summit Detox Center: Fear of Detox is Causing More Opioid Overdoses

New Jersey, 05/26/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Many people who suffer from drug addiction do not seek help because they are terrified of going through withdrawal. The symptoms can be uncomfortable, painful, and sometimes extremely dangerous, for those who use high doses, frequently, and for a long period of time. More than two million people in the U.S. use prescription opioids, and at least another half-a-million abuse heroin. Unfortunately, the fear of detoxing may be causing many avoidable overdoses across the country. That is why it makes more sense to go to medically supervised drug detox at Serenity Treatment in New Jersey.

Why Withdrawal Can Be Dangerous

People with substance abuse and addiction problems who stop using opioid drugs can start to feel the effects of withdrawal within a few hours, with the most severe of symptoms developing on the second to third day of abstinence. But not all opioids are the same, as some cause reactions faster. Every drug has a half-life, which is the amount of time that it takes for the effects of the drug to be reduced by half. Drugs with the shortest half-life will induce withdrawal symptoms between six and twelve hours after discontinuing. Longer acting drugs can take up to 30 hours to produce withdrawal symptoms after use is stopped.

Often, opioid drug abusers and addicts are dependent on short action versions. Because symptoms of withdrawal begin so quickly, they tend to use more frequently. This can be potentially dangerous when a dose of the drug is taken before the previous dose has reached its half-life.

Symptoms of Opioid Withdrawal

The symptoms of early opioid withdrawal can be compared to a moderate to severe case of the flu. People may experience low energy, body aches, cold sweats, cramps, insomnia, and hay fever like symptoms like a runny nose and watery eyes. As time without the drug goes on, the symptoms become worse. As withdrawal reaches its peak, typically around 72 hours after the last use, the following may be experienced:

Nausea and vomiting
Constipation and/or diarrhea
Stomach cramping
Anxiety and panic
Depression
Agitation and irritability
Drug cravings

Depending on the type of opioid drug abused, individuals may feel effects that range from a severe hangover to a life-threatening illness. The danger of overdose comes into play when a user is experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, so much that the person cannot stand to endure them, so they will use larger amounts of the drug to stop the withdrawals. This can easily lead to overdose. Additionally, if the user has other medical issues besides addiction, like heart or respiratory problems, the pain of withdrawal can be even worse, and using to alleviate that pain can result not only in overdose, but also in exacerbating the pre-existing medical conditions. That is why it can be very dangerous for people who are trying to detox from opioids to do it themselves at home.

When Users Try to Avoid Withdrawal

It’s not hard to understand why people who are addicted to opioid drugs will go such distances to avoid the symptoms of withdrawal – they are uncomfortable at the least, and downright painful at the worst. That fear of withdrawal is what leads to the mindset that the best way to avoid the ill effects of withdrawal is to simply never stop using the drug. That leads to users taking more of the drug, more frequently, to keep a constant high.

Using opioids in this manner can involve many risks. The most obvious are the health risks that are associated with opioid drugs. There are factors like the type of drug used, how long it’s been used and in what amounts, and the overall health of the user, that play a part in how severe the withdrawal symptoms are. Potentially, opioid drug abusers who stop using may suffer the following serious side effects:

Stomach distention
Severe constipation
Liver damage
Brain damage

Because of their fear of these symptoms worsening, some users will start increasing the amount of the drug that they take rather than using more frequently. Larger initial doses offer stronger, faster relief from withdrawal. When an opioid drug user takes a larger amount than they are used to, drowsiness, lethargy, nausea, paranoia, and respiratory depression are common.

The Dangers of Trying to Avoid Withdrawal

Overdose can become a reality when users are constantly changing the doses in which they use opioid drugs. When a person takes more frequent doses, the amount of the drug in the bloodstream gradually rises. The drug then builds up, reaching dangerous levels and the person doesn’t fully feel the effects that they are looking for. That may encourage them to use more and more. You can see how an overdose can easily happen in those cases.

Likewise, when a person increases individual doses. The body is used to receiving a certain amount of the drug and may not be able to handle such an increase. If the person has been off of the drug for any amount of time, the body has already begun to stabilize without the drug. So even when there is a short period of abstinence, the body may not be able to handle the same dose that it used to.

If an overdose happens, a person’s respiratory system slows down until it arrests. A person will lose consciousness, have pinpoint pupils, and go into seizures. During an overdose, a person will lose the ability to respond to questions or call for help, which makes using opioid drugs alone so dangerous.

Overdoses Are Avoidable

Most overdoses are completely avoidable, but people fear withdrawal symptoms so much that they change how they use the drug and their bodies are not equipped to handle those changes. While withdrawal symptoms are often a terrible thing to go through, there are ways to manage the discomfort.

When you go to a medically supervised detox facility to break your addiction to opioid drugs, the medical professionals will help you manage the symptoms, sometimes with medication and distraction, always with support and encouragement. If you are ready to detox from opioid drugs, do so at a detox treatment center like Serenity at Summit for your safety and comfort.
