Food Contamination: Are You Eating and Drinking Harmful Particulates?

Riverdale, NJ, 04/10/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Most people understand that air pollution and poor air quality are issues that are important, but it often remains an abstract concept until it affects them directly. But food and beverage contamination grabs people’s attention, because eating and drinking is a vital and necessary part of everyone’s day. Understanding how airborne particulates can compromise the quality of food and drink is the first step in understanding how air filtration systems can provide a solution.

“The food and beverage industry has a big challenge when it comes to protecting their employees and their processes from harmful air pollutants,” stated Mark Davidson, Food and Beverage Segment Manager. Unlike other industries, an E. coli outbreak or a Salmonella outbreak from one shipment of food can cause havoc for months and years. It can destroy a company’s reputation, and worse yet, it can permanently dent the trust that consumers place in that company’s ability to deliver food that is not tainted. For those reasons, effective air filtration systems are essential to the survival of food and beverage companies.”

How Contamination Occurs

Food and beverage contamination can occur in several different ways during processes such as packaging, sampling, production, storage and transport.

However, per an article in Nutritional Outlook magazine, there are three main types of contamination that typically affect the food and beverage industry: Cross-contamination, particle contamination and microbial contamination.

During the production process, cross-contamination occurs when more than one type of food is produced at a facility, and equipment used to process that food is not properly cleaned. As a result, contamination from one type of food is transferred to another type of food due to the improperly cleaned equipment.

For the purposes of air filtration, however, particle contamination and microbial contamination are far more relevant to the issue at hand.

Particle contamination occurs when tiny airborne particles settle into food and open beverage containers during the production process, or during the packaging process.

This type of contamination is nearly always due to a lack of effective air filtration system that can eliminate many of the particulates before they land and mix into the food. But in addition to air filters, food and beverage facilities must also understand how the construction and design of their facilities may hinder or help the incubation of harmful particulates.

The third type of contamination – microbial contamination – refers to the growth of bacteria and mold.

Microbial contamination can occur due to improper sanitation procedures by employees, or through moisture in the facility from leaks that can worsen over time and lead to mold. Many bacteria and mold can become airborne and if not removed by effective air filtration can become a liability.

The Importance of Filtration and Facility Design

Combating food and beverage contamination at these facilities typically comes down to implementing an air filtration strategy as well as optimizing the design of a facility.

High efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) air filters are rated to eliminate 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter, which is about 300 times smaller than strand of human hair, and far smaller than the human eye can perceive.

HEPA filters are so effective that even the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines for Environmental Infection Control in Healthcare Facilities recommend their use to trap microbial spores in patient rooms.

This makes them ideal for eliminating microbial contamination in food and beverage facilities. However, even the best air filtration system cannot be fully effective without an adequate ventilation system, which considers humidity and temperature, and the amount of fresh air circulating through the facility.

Camfil’s Clean Air Solutions

At Camfil, we understand the challenges facing the food and beverage industry, which is why we have designed our air filters to be ultra-efficient and affordable.

Our air filters have three key characteristics that are vital to eliminating harmful particulates from your food and beverage facilities:

Efficiency – Camfil filters do not include an electrostatic charge that can quickly lose its filtering capability. Camfil filters are built with fine fibers that maintain efficiency for the life of the filter and continuously reduce airborne pathogens and particulates.
Low Resistance – Camfil filters provide greater and more continuous airflow three times longer than other air filters on the market. This means that your HVAC system won’t have to work as hard to move clean air through your facility, which saves energy.
High Capacity – Camfil filters can hold twice as much dirt as the leading air filters in the industry, while maintaining rated efficiency and airflow. This helps extend the working life of the air filter and means fewer change outs, which also saves you money on replacement filters and the labor costs of frequent installations.

For more than 50 years, Camfil has offered clean air solutions to combat food and beverage contamination. We are committed to offering the best products in the air filtration industry, as well as providing information about important issues affecting air quality. Visit our site for more information.

2015 Truck Accident Report Should Concern All Motorists

Dallas, 04/10/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) –– the agency that creates and enforces motor vehicle safety regulations –– recently issued an early version (the full report is due sometime in 2017) of its 2015 truck accident report, and the results showed an eight percent increase in the number of fatal wrecks from 2014 to 2015, which is a source of concern.

“Unfortunately, the FMCSA is typically about a year behind in terms of compiling data, so even though we’re in 2017, the early truck wreck statistics for 2015 have just been released, and the eight percent increase in fatal truck accidents from 2014 to 2015 is troubling,” stated Dallas plaintiff trial attorney Amy Witherite of Eberstein Witherite. “We have to look closely at the numbers to see if we can identify problem areas so that the FMCSA can implement new regulations to help lower accidents in the future.”

Some Key Stats

According to the early version of the FMCSA’s 2015 truck accident report, there were an estimated 4,311 large trucks and buses involved in fatal wrecks in 2015, which is eight percent higher than in 2014.

In addition, fatal truck and bus accidents increased by 26 percent from 2009 to 2015, although the 4,311 fatal wrecks in 2015 was 18 percent lower than the peak in 2005, in which there were 5,231 wrecks.

The statistics were worse with injury accidents, as the FMCSA reported that there was “an increase of 62 percent [of injuries caused by large trucks or buses] from 60,000 in 2009 to 97,000 in 2015.”

The largest percentage of fatal truck accidents in 2015 occurred between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. (17.9%), and an article on the BLR website –– which focuses on solutions for employment, safety and environmental compliance ––  shed some light on why this time period was so dangerous:

“Notice that the majority of fatal crashes take place during the day, in clear weather and on dry roads.,” read a portion of the article. “This may have more to do with the number of vehicles on the road during those times than with other factors…”

Fifty-one percent of fatal truck accidents occurred on a two-way/not divided roadway, which provided no barrier to prevent trucks from veering into traffic from the opposite lanes.

Major Contributing Factors

The FMCSA report also found some major contributing factors that lead to truck wrecks in 2015, including driver-related factors, collisions and overturns and speed limits.

Driver-related factors is often referred to as driver behavior, and in 2015, 33 percent of fatal truck wrecks were the result of driver behavior such as speeding, driver distraction and driver inattention.

Direct collisions between a commercial truck and another vehicle caused 74 percent of all fatal truck accidents in 2015, and 78 percent of accidents that only resulted in property damage were due to collisions.

Speed has always been a major contributing factor in motor vehicle accidents, and in 2015, 64 percent of fatal truck accidents occurred in locations where the speed limit exceeded 50 miles per hour.

In fact, a CBSnews.com piece in 2015 pointed out the dangers of raising speed limits as it related to commercial trucks, because the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned that most truck tires are not rated to withstand speeds exceeding 75 mph.

The American Trucking Association (ATA) –– the industry’s largest trade group –– has sounded the alarm about increasing speed limits.

“Raising speed limits at the state level is a bad idea beyond 65 mph,” stated Dave Osiecki, ATA’s Executive Vice President.

But there are also some practical considerations that must be factored into any examination of fatal truck wrecks.

Per a piece on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) website that was written after release of the FMCSA’s report, the sheer weight and length of commercial trucks does not provide truck drivers with any margin for error.

“Truck braking capability can be a factor in truck crashes,” part of the article read. “Loaded tractor-trailers take 20-40 percent farther than cars to stop, and the discrepancy is greater on wet and slippery roads or with poorly maintained brakes.”

The FMCSA is expected to release the full report in 2017, along with proposed regulations to stem the increase of fatal truck accidents.

Spring Break Injuries

New York City, NY, 04/10/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

As the last few weeks of cold weather wrap up, many teens and college students are gearing up for a spring vacation. Although spring break can provide a much-needed respite from studying and other responsibilities, it can also lead to serious injuries, as well as complicated legal matters if you’re injured far away from home.

Here are four spring break injuries to keep in mind, along with tips for avoiding them.

4 Common Spring Break Injuries

Violent Crime – It’s an unfortunate fact that some popular tourist destinations are also burdened by high crime rates. In 2015, the Coca-Cola Company settled a lawsuit with a Texas college student who was violently attacked and nearly stabbed to death on a beach owned by the soft drink maker.

Property Owner Negligence – Slips and falls and related injuries can happen anywhere, including parties and gatherings at homes, hotels, resorts, and other places. If your spring break plans include partying at a home or business, keep an eye out for potential hazards, including spills, loose carpeting or floor tiles, and a building that doesn’t have clearly marked exits.

In one of the most horrific nightclub disasters in U.S. history, 100 people were killed and 230 were injured when a fire broke out at a Rhode Island nightclub, completely engulfing the club in under five minutes. An investigation revealed that two of the four exits in the building had been chained shut, preventing people from escaping. The building also lacked a proper sprinkler system, as fire safety inspectors had incorrectly concluded that the building’s age exempted it from having sprinklers.

Cruise Ship Injuries – A cruise can be a great way to enjoy a vacation without worrying about hotel rooms and transportation. However, there have been many cases involving allegations of negligence on the part of cruise operators. In 2017, about 30 passengers injured on a Spirit Cruise filed a lawsuit for damages they say they sustained when their cruise ship crashed into a dock.
Drinking-Related Injuries – Data from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reveals that half of all college students engage in binge drinking, and a startling percentage of college students take binge drinking to an extreme during spring break, with the average male student drinking 18 drinks per day.

New York City personal injury lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter states, “Excessive alcohol consumption can seriously alter a person’s judgment, causing them to engage in activities that endanger themselves and others. When you’re away from home or in an unfamiliar country or tourist spot, it’s best to avoid any substance that interferes with your ability to make good decisions.”

If you have been injured on spring break or vacation, you may be facing a personal injury case that is more complicated than an injury case involving an accident in your home state. Contact a New York City personal injury lawyer right away to protect your rights and discuss the next steps in your case.

Airline Accident Lawyer Discusses NTSB Report On Alaska Airplane Crash

New York City, NY, 04/06/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a new report giving more insight into what caused the 2015 crash of a sightseeing plane near Ketchikan, Alaska.

According to the story covering the report’s release, the plane crashed into a rock face, killing everyone on board, including the pilot and eight passengers, who were tourists from a nearby cruise ship.

Report Says Disengaged Warning System and Pilot’s Decisions Led to Crash

The story goes on to state that many of the pilot’s peers and co-workers claim he was highly experienced and had a reputation for safety. The president of the company that owned the plane told the NTSB that the pilot had at various times canceled flights due to bad weather, and had even declined to fly in conditions other pilots didn’t hesitate to take on.

However, some of the individuals interviewed claimed the pilot sometimes opted to fly in high winds, and that his plane’s floats had been known to strike trees during flight — a sign he might have taken unreasonable risks.

On the day of the crash, logbooks show the pilot had already made two flights and was on his third when he chose to take a route that took the plane through a “narrows” between two mountain peaks.

Reports also state that the plane involved in the crash had a terrain avoidance warning system with an “inhibit” switch that could be flipped to turn the system off in areas where the terrain made the system send alerts too frequently. Investigators at the crash site found that the switch was off and that the plane’s warning system had been disabled, meaning the pilot would not have received alerts about flying too close to dangerous terrain.

NYC Airline Accident Lawyer Discusses the Hazards of Flying in Alaska

New York City airline accident lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter states, “Alaska is known for having some of the most hazardous flying conditions in the country. High winds, extreme weather, and mountainous terrain make flying treacherous. Residents of Alaska are also forced to fly more often than people in other states, as the highway system is much less developed due to low population numbers and extreme weather conditions.”

The NTSB report also revealed that one of the individuals required to approve all flight plans for the company whose plane was involved in the crash didn’t have any actual aviation experience. This is why it’s critical to thoroughly investigate any aviation sightseeing operation you encounter before boarding a flight. Don’t take it for granted that the company will act in your best interests.

If you have been injured in a plane crash, or you have lost a loved one in an aviation accident, act quickly to protect your rights. Contact a New York City airline accident lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your case.

Truck Accident Lawyer Discusses Inexperienced Truckers And Crash Rates

Dallas, 04/06/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Most people remember how nervous they were the first time they got behind the wheel of a car. There’s a good reason why the law requires young people to take a student driving course before they receive a driver’s license. Classroom instruction as well as a certain number of hours behind the wheel ensure that everyone on the road stays safer.

Texas truck accident lawyer Amy Witherite explains, “Driving a semi-truck safely requires a tremendous amount of experience and skill. When truckers are allowed to get on the road with very few driving hours under their belts, statistics show that they’re more likely to cause a serious or fatal accident.”

For truck drivers, the experience of driving a regular car isn’t enough to qualify them to sit behind the wheel of a semi-truck. According to federal law, individuals must complete both classroom courses and real-world driving time (not a simulator) to receive a commercial driver’s license.

However, the federal rules don’t require truckers to complete a minimum number of hours on the road — something that surprises many people.

Education Requirements for Truck Drivers

When you think about how massive a semi-truck is, it’s shocking to think that there are no minimum training hours required for truckers just learning how to drive a big rig.

Although rules set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) require truckers to complete driving curriculum as well as on-the-road hours, the law doesn’t set a specific amount of time for either of these courses. Instead, that’s left up to the individual training providers.

Furthermore, federal rules don’t require training providers to be accredited by any third party organization before they’re allowed to provide truck driver training. Also, individual instructors aren’t required to be certified by any authority or organization. Instead, the rule allows for a “self-certification process” that requires trainers to “attest, under penalties of perjury, that they comply with the Federal requirements — including instructor qualifications — in order to be eligible.”

Crash Stats for New Truck Drivers

Experience tends to make people better at their jobs. This is true for a variety of professions, including trucking. According to a study conducted by the Department of Transportation, semi-truck drivers with less than five years of experience driving tractor-trailers were 41 percent more likely to be involved in an accident compared to drivers with five or more years on the road.

If you have been injured in a semi-truck accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. Don’t wait to speak to an attorney. Call an experienced Texas truck accident lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your case.

Dallas Internet Crime Lawyer Explains – Can You Be Charged with Sending a “Dangerous” Tweet?

Dallas, 04/06/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Like it or not, social media is a part of everyday life. Facebook has more than one billion active users, and Twitter counts 317 million people among its active users. Furthermore, a growing number of people use social media as part of their jobs, and some jobs even require social sharing and interaction in the job description.

Facebook, Twitter, and the various other social apps are a form of communication, but can they truly be used to communicate a threat — or even to carry out actual physical harm?

According to one criminal case, they can.

Man Charged with Sending Seizure-Inducing Tweet

Recently, a 29-year-old Maryland man was arrested for tweeting a flashing image to a Newsweek journalist who suffers from epilepsy, a condition that makes an individual prone to seizures.

The tweet, which the accused apparently sent because he disagreed with the journalist’s reporting on the current White House administration, contained the message, “You deserve a seizure for your post.” The report states that it’s well known that the journalist has epilepsy.

A computer scientists at the University of Michigan called this type of criminal charge “a new era.” Legal experts likened the tweet to sending a letter bomb through the mail or engineering an allergic reaction in someone with deadly allergies.

Although the criminal charge might be the first of its kind, this is not the first time an individual has used the internet to attempt to carry out a physical attack. In 2008, hackers broke into the servers of the Epilepsy Foundation and posted flashing images on its website. Furthermore, the journalist targeted in the tweet says he has received malicious flashing images before, when someone sent him a video featuring a strobe light.

In 2016, Johnson & Johnson warned consumers that certain insulin pumps were vulnerable to computer hacks, and medical experts worry that other devices, including pacemakers and drug pumps, could be hacked by an individual with malicious intent.

The Rise in Internet Crimes

Internet crimes have surged in recent years. A 2015 CBS report states that cybercrimes topped 1.5 million that year, which translates to 4,000 cyber-attacks each day. Although many of these offenses involve financial crimes or the theft of data, a growing number go beyond stealing money or information. While the law in this area is still evolving, the recent malicious tweet case has likely opened the door to more criminal charges for assault or physical harm carried out over the internet.

Changing People, Places, And Things In Addiction Treatment And Recovery

New Jersey, 04/06/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Early recovery is difficult; it is within the first six months of sobriety that most relapses happen. So, it’s recommended that you stay away from anything that may lead you to return to drinking or using.

If you have been to alcohol or drug addiction treatment already, you have likely heard that changing the people, places, and things in your life is often necessary to maintain sobriety. Balancing what you hope to keep in your old life with your new life in recovery isn’t an easy endeavor. Change is hard – you have to take it day by day. The following are a few thoughts to help you along your way.

Changing Places

When you’re new in recovery, it’s dangerous to continue to go to the places you went while using. Whether you frequented bars, parties, concerts, or other using settings, they are especially slippery in early recovery. You won’t necessarily have to avoid these places forever, but they can certainly put brand new sobriety at risk. It’s normal to not be in a completely healthy emotional place when you have just gotten sober, so there is no reason to go back to the places that you used drugs or drank alcohol – you have no business being there. Slippery places will only serve to make you feel like an outsider as you watch others drink. It can be tortuous and a relapse waiting to happen.

If there are specific drinking events that you feel you must attend in early sobriety, like weddings or family gatherings, consider whether or not you really have to. There is no shame in bowing out of situations that might challenge your sobriety. If you must go, talk with your sponsor or therapist to come up with coping strategies and to have support ready for you if you need it.

Don’t allow the fact that you can’t go to your old hangouts make you think that you will never have fun again. Get involved with other sober people, and you will quickly realize that there are a lot of activities and events that they attend that are exciting and interesting. Try new things – take a class, spend time outdoors, find a new hobby. Your life isn’t over it’s just changing.

Changing People

Your top priority is your recovery. That means that anyone you used to drink or use drugs with needs to be cut off straightaway. That may mean that you are walking away from people and friends who have been in your life for a long time. However, if drugs or alcohol surrounded those relationships, you have to do it. If they really have your best interests at heart, they will be supportive of you making a positive change in your life. If not, good riddance. There’s a saying in recovery circles that “there is nothing like getting sober to show you who your real friends are.”

Of course, some people who are threatening to your sobriety you can’t get away from, like family members. And they are the most likely people to know how to push your buttons and send you right back to the liquor store. Try to keep contact and interaction with those people to a minimum. Talk with other people in recovery to see how they have dealt with those types of situations, and share your thoughts and concerns with them. It isn’t likely that you will have problems in recovery that others haven’t had too, so they can be a great support to you.

Changing Things

There may be specific things that you did while you were drinking or using drugs that bring up feelings of craving when you are in recovery. For example, maybe you always drank while you were listening to certain music or watching specific movies or television shows. Those may seem like harmless and normal things to do, but if they make you feel triggered to drink or use, you should stay away from them for a while. It doesn’t mean that you have to avoid activities that you used to enjoy forever; you just need to have more experience being sober and dealing with triggers before you try them again.

The key to avoiding risky behaviors and situations is to learn what your triggers are and then stay away from them until you are better equipped to handle them. Staying away from things that are going to cause you to romanticize your alcohol or drug using is a good rule of thumb in early recovery. Be mindful of how you are feeling and talk to someone supportive when you feel triggered. Those feelings won’t last forever, but hopefully your sobriety will.

Recovery Requires Change

The idea behind changing people, places, and things in recovery is to break your old patterns of behavior that led you to drink or use. People who are new in recovery often fall victim to “euphoric recall,” romanticizing or glamorizing their past using, only recalling the pleasurable feelings and positive times they had. This is a dangerous way of thinking, and putting yourself in situations (or around people) in which you used to drink or use can easily lead you to those types of thoughts. It’s always a good idea to break up the old pattern of the romanticized fantasy to its complete end.

Consider times in the past when you made positive changes that were difficult. It’s likely that those changes quickly became your new normal. Recovery is like that too. It will feel natural and normal to you given some time.

Making positive changes and finding the right addiction treatment and support for your recovery will make the process less overwhelming and reduce your stress as you embark on your new lifestyle.

Autonomous Cars: Savior Or Danger? By Boca Car Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 04/06/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Drivers are often their own worst enemy. Most accidents are caused by drivers making mistakes. They are distracted, drowsy, drunk, aggressive, inexperienced, driving too fast, ignoring the rules of the road or simply inconsiderate. If we mistake-prone human drivers are taken out of the equation, might computer controlled autonomous vehicles cause fewer accidents, injuries and deaths? The jury is still out on that says Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne.

Uber Technologies Inc., the ride-sharing company, is planning, long term, to replace its human drivers with a fleet of self-driving cars in order to lower its costs and allow it to avoid the hassles that come with working with human drivers. As part of this plan it’s road testing a number of autonomous vehicles in Arizona, Pennsylvania and California. Earlier this month one of its vehicles was involved in a collision in Tempe and the program was stopped for a short time, according to Bloomberg.

After an investigation it was determined the Uber vehicle, with an engineer behind the wheel to monitor the vehicle, was not at fault and there were no life threatening injuries, according to the Tempe Police Department. Another car failed to yield, causing the collision where the Uber vehicle flipped on its side.

Former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz told CNBC that fully autonomous vehicles might end up having about 10% of the accidents caused by human drivers.

He said, “The autonomous car doesn’t drink, doesn’t do drugs, doesn’t text while driving, doesn’t get road rage…Young, autonomous cars don’t want to race other autonomous cars, and they don’t go to sleep…The autonomous car obeys the speed limit at all times, never drifts out of the lane, never tries to pass another car.”

Ford, GM, Tesla, Lyft, Google and Uber are planning to have some form of autonomous car ready within the next five years. Goldman Sachs estimates that by 2030 driverless cars could make up as much as 60% of US auto sales, reports Business Insider.

They may be safer than traditional cars with their fallible human drivers for a number of reasons:

The cars have a number of sensors including cameras, radar, lasers and ultrasonic sensors.

GPS and mapping technology help the car determine its position.

<!– [if !supportLists]·
[endif]–>A computer controls the car.

One model is about the size of a license plate and it uses the data coming in from the sensors to build a three-dimensional model of the car and its environment.

<!– [if !supportLists]·
[endif]–>The testing being done is to create a model of the real world to teach the computer and its software driving situations so it can decide what to do and not do given what’s happening around it.

<!– [if !supportLists]·
[endif]–>The computer, based on the model, and the data from the sensors, can track several vehicles and objects all around the vehicle simultaneously.

The hope is that the computer will be able to handle far more input than the human brain, more accurately track the things around it and follow the rules of the road, all resulting in safer driving for the passengers and those all around it.

We haven’t reached this point yet and the roads are filled with mistake prone, sometimes negligent, human drivers. If you or a loved one have suffered an injury caused by the negligence of another driver, contact Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. You can discuss your case, how the law may apply and your best legal options to protect your rights and obtain compensation for your injuries.
