Addiction Treatment Experts Explain How To Tell Your Kids About Your Addiction

New Jersey, 03/27/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

You likely have the view that parents are supposed to be role models for their kids, guiding them though life’s obstacles, and doing so with a positive image. Substance abuse of drugs or alcohol crushes that ideal. It may feel like you are going to be letting your children down, not living up to what they need and deserve, if you tell them about your chemical or alcohol dependence. That isn’t true, though. There are some amazing benefits to talking with your kids about your alcohol and drug addiction, report the addiction treatment experts at Summit Behavioral Health.

For more reading about how to build trust and help your child understand your illness read: How to Help a Child Understand Addiction Through Empathy

What Works When Talking to Your Children About Drugs and Alcohol

Studies show that most kids are exposed to drugs or alcohol in middle school starting at about 12 years of age. This is a perilous time of life in the best of situations. Kids are entering adolescence and beginning to challenge common beliefs about their world. Parenting at this time in a child’s life is difficult at times, to say the least. However, it is also a great opportunity to build a long-lasting feeling of trust between you and your child.

Talking with your children about mistakes you have made in the past is hard, especially when you are telling them not to do what you’ve done. They’ve likely heard you say not to use drugs or alcohol already, but it’s simply been a matter of “because I said so.”

Be Honest with Your Children

When you decide to have the conversation about your drug addiction with your children, being honest is the most important thing you can do. It is also important to remember to make sure that the conversation and details that you give are age-appropriate for your kids. But the earlier you can start, the better – for you and for them. Don’t allow fear to stand in the way of your honesty. Sharing your story with your children is building a strong foundation of awareness for them about substance abuse. You are able to tell them the truth because you have been through it.

By practicing honesty, you are giving your kids the gift of having someone in their corner to talk to when drugs or alcohol come up in their lives. They will feel more comfortable coming to you when they are presented with situations involving drugs and alcohol at school or with their friends.

Opening the Door for Communication

If you have teenagers, you know how difficult they can be. There are times that they seem to be all hormones and attitude, and it often seems like they are making it their mission to isolate themselves from everything you say or do. This is a crucial time to keep the door open for communication – especially about drugs and alcohol.

If you have shared your story of recovery with them already, be prepared that they may throw it right back in your face at this point in their lives. If they want to go out with their friends to a party and you say no, they may bring up your past. Remember to stay calm and remind them that you shared that with them in trust and to help them avoid making the mistakes that you did.

Talking with your kids about your past drug or alcohol problem use may be saving them from going through the hell of addiction by painting a clear picture for them of what it was like.

Benefits of Telling Your Kids About Your Addiction

Telling your kids about your past alcohol and chemical dependency is beneficial for them and for your recovery. For some people in recovery, the longer they are sober the easier it is to romanticize their days of using or drinking. Talking with your kids about it helps ground you in your recovery by keeping it fresh. When you talk to them about your past behavior as an addicted person you are more likely to stay focused on your recovery.

Your kids will benefit too. Not only are you building a foundation of honesty and trust with them by telling your story, you are allowing them to share in your recovery. Hopefully they will learn from your mistakes, but if they don’t, and they choose to go down the same road you did, at least they will know that they will have love and support from you when they need it.

Explaining Alcohol and Drug Addiction to Your Children

Talking about your own story of addiction with your kids gives you the opportunity to explain drug and alcohol addiction from a medical standpoint. You can talk about the fact that it’s a disease that changes the brain and personalities. This lets your kids know that while you may have chosen to use drugs or alcohol in the beginning, you didn’t choose to become addicted, that it is something that happens regardless of your intentions. This helps reinforce the fact that even trying drugs or taking a drink once can be risky behavior for them.

Foster a Trusting and Hopeful Relationship

When to talk to your children about your past substance abuse is a choice only you can make. When you (and they) are ready, make sure that you give the subject the time that it deserves. Limit distractions while you are talking and be prepared to answer your kids’ questions. However, they may not know what to say or ask at first – it may take them a while to process what you’re telling them. It may be beneficial to have your spouse there as well, or a counselor if you have a difficult relationship with your children.

While talking to your kids about this subject may be difficult, you are ultimately fostering a relationship of trust and hope with them. Your sharing prompts them to share. And seeing you now, in recovery, shows them that even really hard things can be overcome- with the right help.

Medication Errors Threaten Residents Says Boca Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 03/27/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Residents of nursing homes may need to take several medications to help treat the medical challenges they face. If the wrong drug is taken, or the right medication is given but at the wrong dosage at the wrong time, there can be severe health consequences says Boca nursing home abuse lawyer Joe Osborne.

These medication errors are common in the healthcare system in general and in nursing homes in particular.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration defines a medication error as:

Any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the health care professional, patient or consumer.

Such events may be related to professional practice and systems, including: prescription, order communication, product labeling, packaging, compounding, dispensing, distribution, administration, education, monitoring and use.

The Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services looked into the issue of medication errors in skilled nursing facilities. After their investigation they issued a report in 2014 which found:

About 22% of Medicare patients experienced adverse events during their stays.

79% of those suffering adverse events needed to stay in facilities longer or needed hospital treatment, 14% needed medical intervention to save the person’s life and 6% of the time the medication error contributed to or caused the resident’s death.

In one month’s time (August 2011) an estimated 1,538 Medicare patients in skilled nursing facilities nationwide died with medication errors at least partially to blame.

Medication errors caused “cascade events” in 3,986 residents where errors triggered multiple medical issues in residents often suffering from more than one medical condition.

Another 11% suffered temporary harm during their stays. In many cases the harm was only temporary because of quick responses by staff.

Physicians reviewing the issue found that 59% of adverse and temporary harm events were clearly or likely preventable.

The top problems were substandard treatment, inadequate resident monitoring and failure or delay of necessary care.

More than half of the residents who suffered harm needed hospital treatment (a total of 20,393 people), costing Medicare an estimated $208 million in just one month, August 2011.

For fiscal year 2011 the report estimated that medication errors cost Medicare $2.8 billion for hospital treatment due to harm caused by medication errors in skilled nursing facilities nationwide.

There are many potential reasons why medication errors occur, they aren’t discovered until it’s too late and residents are not treated appropriately.

Overworked staff caring for too many residents may be in a rush to get work done before a shift is over.

Poor communication or errors in medical records can result in the wrong drug or wrong dosage being used.

Residents may not know what medications they need to take and are unable to ensure they’re being treated properly.

If a family member living in an assisted living facility or nursing home in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach Counties suffered harm because of a medication error, contact Boca Raton nursing home abuse lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. We can talk about the situation, how the law could apply in your case and the best legal options to protect your rights and obtain compensation for your loved one’s injuries.

Aviation Lawyer Discusses Pilots Removed From Flight For Being Drunk

New York City, NY, 03/23/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The end of the year and the New Year’s holiday brought two disturbing stories of commercial airline pilots prevented from taking to the skies while intoxicated.

In one case, flight crew members noticed the pilot of a Sunwing Airlines flight acting strangely and slumped over in his seat before the plane was scheduled to take off from a Calgary, Alberta airport in Canada. The flight had 99 passengers and six crew members on board and was scheduled to fly to Cancun on New Year’s Eve.

Calgary police stated at a press conference that the pilot eventually lapsed into unconsciousness in the cockpit. A CBC News report stated that the pilot was working in Canada on a work visa and is originally from Slovakia. Two hours after the pilot’s arrest, he tested three times the legal limit for alcohol. A representative for the airline said it will conduct its own internal investigation.

In a separate incident, two executives for Citilink, a budget airline in Indonesia, resigned after a pilot apparently attempted to fly while intoxicated. Several passengers on a flight became worried about the pilot’s health and capabilities after he allegedly slurred his words during a pre-flight announcement. Some passengers even opted to leave the plane. Several passengers recorded the announcement and posted it to social media. The airline intervened and assigned a new pilot to the flight, however, many passengers chose to cancel their flight rather than travel with the new pilot.

Passengers Used Smartphones to Record Impaired Pilot

As an NBC News report points out, aviation safety is a top concern in Indonesia, which is made up of 17,000 islands. Residents and travelers must frequently fly to navigate around the islands.

Passengers also filmed videos of the pilot, who appeared to stagger through the metal detectors. Video also shows him losing control of his luggage and spilling personal belongings on the floor.

As explained by New York based aviation accident lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter, “Smartphones have changed the way people handle car accidents, and now they are changing the way people fly. Being able to record a pilot or flight crew when you feel unsafe as a passenger is a potentially powerful tool. If the passengers who recorded this pilot had not had the ability to get evidence to support their claims, the story might have ended differently.”

Addiction Treatment Center: How To Manage Prescription Pain Meds During Recovery

New Jersey, 03/22/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Everyone will experience physical pain at some point. Whether you’re in an accident, suffer from chronic back pain, have surgery, or break a bone, there is no one who is immune. That means that even those who are in recovery from substance abuse and addiction are not exempt. The question is really when you will suffer pain, not if you will. If you are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction, that brings up another question – how can you maintain your sobriety if narcotic painkillers are needed and prescribed? If your doctor suggests opioid pain relievers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, or the much stronger Fentanyl, will your sobriety and recovery be compromised? It’s a dilemma that bears careful consideration, according to Summit Behavioral Health a New Jersey addiction treatment center.

How to manage serious physical pain when you’re in recovery is not an easy thing to do. It’s vital that excruciating pain be eased, but most medications that will provide that relief can jeopardize even long periods of sobriety. Finding the balance between alleviating pain and maintaining recovery from addiction varies from person to person, but it always carries a degree of risk of relapse. It can trigger the substance addiction process to begin in patients causing relapse to their original drug of choice or a new one.

Which Pain Medications are Safe to Use in Recovery?

There are some pain medications that are safe for people in recovery. They include such drugs as Tylenol (acetaminophen), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, Advil (ibuprofen), and Aleve (naproxen sodium). But these types of pain relievers don’t often provide enough relief when serious pain is involved. For those who undergo surgery, have serious chronic pain, or extensive injuries, some Tylenol and an ice pack are clearly not sufficient to lessen the amount of pain they are suffering.

What If “Unsafe” Medications Are Prescribed?

So, what is a person in recovery to do when stronger painkillers are suggested? The first step is to discuss the risks of taking such medications with your doctor. Your doctor should consider your personal and family history of alcohol or drug addiction – these factors must be considered. Some physicians, even today, are not familiar with the addiction process and are therefore not as concerned with prescribing painkillers that might be unsafe for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. As the patient, or the family of the patient in cases where the patient cannot speak for himself, you must be responsible for alerting your doctor about your risk of relapse.

Depending on the circumstances and the level of pain, a prescription painkiller may still be warranted. Doctors typically follow these guidelines when prescribing pain medication to people in recovery or those who have a family history of addiction:

For patients with chronic pain: Chronic pain is usually defined as pain that has lasted longer than six months. Most patients can successfully be treated without the prescription of opioids – they are seen as a last resort medication for people in recovery. The World Health Organization recommends the following steps be adhered to when treating pain, and opioids are the last of these:

Doctors should suggest over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers like acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium; they are not addictive.
If OTC pain medications don’t offer enough relief, then it’s recommended that doctors prescribe medications like lidocaine, gabapentin, and tricyclic antidepressants. These are still considered relatively safe for patients in recovery.
Only when those medications fail to work should opioid painkillers be considered for pain management, and protocol should be followed for the close monitoring of the patient.

For patients with acute pain: Acute pain, such as pain following an injury or surgery, is typically treated first with an opioid painkiller, but only for a short amount of time (a few days at the most). After the initial acute phase of the injury or recovery from surgery, the opioid drugs should be discontinued under the doctor’s supervision.

Managing Pain While Avoiding Relapse

It’s important when a person recovering from alcohol and drug addiction has to take prescription pain medication that they let those close to them know exactly what they are taking and when. Sponsors, family members, spouses, and other people in their recovery support system must be aware of the prescription, why they are on it, and how they should be taking it. In this situation, there can be no secrets.

One of the best ways to manage pain and avoid relapse is to have someone other than the patient administer the painkillers. Taking the control out of the hands of the person in recovery is often recommended. The goal for people in recovery who have to take prescription painkillers is to take the medication as prescribed, no more, and to get off of the pain medication as soon as possible. However, it is very important that when a person in recovery is suffering from severe pain that it be addressed. Untreated pain in a person with substance abuse and addiction issues is a relapse risk waiting to happen in itself.

Precautions to Take When Prescription Pain Medication is Necessary

If you are in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and you find yourself in the position where prescription painkillers are necessary, there are some precautions you can take to help avoid relapse.

Make sure that all your medical providers know your personal and family history of addiction, how long you have been sober, and what your wishes are regarding pain medication.
Make sure that you are prescribed the lowest effective dose of any addictive medications.
Asking someone else to administer addictive medications – take the control out of your own hands.
Calling your doctor if you have increased pain rather than taking more medication than prescribed.
Continuing the activities that support your recovery like 12-step meetings, talking with your sponsor, or other related activities.
If You Become Addicted to Pain Medication

There may come a time that you have to use prescription painkillers even though you are in recovery. They can greatly improve your quality of life, but they can also put your sobriety at risk, so you have to remain vigilant and weigh your options carefully. In the event that you do become addicted to prescription pain medication, all is not lost. You can regain your sobriety and continue your recovery if you seek help from the right addiction treatment center.

NJ Alcoholism Treatment Center Explains What “Drinking in Moderation” Means

New Jersey, 03/23/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

You may have heard the saying, “everything in moderation.” Generally, it means that most things are safe as long as you don’t overdo them. This can go for a lot of things, from eating sweets and drinking coffee to putting in time at work and exercising. Even activities that are considered healthy, such as jogging, can be bad for you if you take them to an extreme.

How much is too much, and is it different for everyone? Summit Behavioral Health, an alcoholism treatment center offers their thoughts on the subject.

CDC Facts about Moderate Drinking

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “moderate drinking” is defined as:

No more than one drink per day for women.
No more than two drinks per day for men.
Individuals who should never drink include pregnant women, individuals with health problems where alcohol is contraindicated, people engaged in activities that require full mental competence and concentration, and people who are recovering alcoholics or otherwise unable to control how much they drink.

The CDC bases its data on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Furthermore, the CDC defines “one drink” as:

12 ounces of beer
Eight ounces of malt liquor
Five ounces of wine
5 ounces of distilled spirits or liquor (80-proof)

The CDC also reports that two in three adults admit to drinking above moderate levels at least once a month.

For some people, even moderate drinking is too much. There are several factors that can make people more or less susceptible to the effects of alcohol. These factors include:

Age
Gender
Ethnicity
Family history
Fitness level
Weight
Food consumed prior to drinking
How quickly alcohol is consumed
Drug use or use of prescription medication

For individuals who are sensitive to alcohol, even moderate drinking can be dangerous or at the very least inadvisable. And for those recovering from an alcohol abuse disorder, it’s important to avoid alcohol completely.

A CDC study, Prevalence of Alcohol Dependence Among US Adult Drinkers, revealed that the majority of people who consume alcohol have drinking habits that fall somewhere between the definition of “moderate drinking” and excessive drinking, with 90 percent of “excessive drinkers” not being dependent on alcohol. The authors of the study state that women should restrict themselves to fewer than eight alcoholic drinks per week. For men, the limit is no more than 14 drinks per week.

Big Data and Trucking Safety – 1800 Truck Wreck ® Weighs In

Dallas, 03/24/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

A team of researchers at Iowa State University claim that big data could improve safety (1) and productivity in the trucking industry.

click to share

In this context, “big data” refers to the wealth of information gathered by state traffic centers, commercial carrier companies, and truck drivers. The researchers believe that sharing this data across various points of the trucking industry could improve delivery performance, minimize idle time, and boost safety.

Researchers Say ELDs Could Be Used for More Than Logging Hours

The research team surveyed more than 24 logistics and tech providers, commercial carriers, and various types of haulers to identify which types of trucking-related problems could benefit most from more accessible data. The top problems identified were weather conditions, points of congestion, accidents, road conditions, parking availability, and construction projects.

Researchers also noted that their goal was to improve safety, not create more distractions for truck drivers. The team stated that the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) could be incorporated into data sharing to improve safety on the roads.

The federal government has already mandated that semi-trucks make the switch from paper logs to ELDs (2) by December 18, 2017.

Researchers believe that incorporating other pertinent information into an ELD system could improve safety rates and reduce the incidence of near-misses and collisions. Although it’s possible to include some of the data in an app, the research team believed this would only create distractions that could actually result in more accidents.

Texas truck accident lawyer Amy Witherite explains, “Technology is part of everyday life for most people, and truck drivers are no exception. Because they spend their working hours on the road, even a quick glance down at a smartphone can be disastrous. By using ELDs as a way of getting important information to carriers and drivers, the industry might be able to reduce distractions and improve safety for everyone on the road.”

If you have been injured in a semi-truck accident, or you have lost a loved one in a tractor-trailer collision, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and other losses. Don’t wait to speak to an attorney. Call an experienced Texas truck accident lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your case.

The product includes a new, unused Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 genuine Product Key that can be used to activate Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 in any region. Once activated, the key will bind to your motherboard and will never expire.

From home projects to homework, Office helps your family make the most of every opportunity, every day.

Communicate and share with family, friends, and colleagues. Access your files whenever you need them, using any computer with a web browser and the free Office Web Apps.

Office 2016 is, of course, more than one application and the ‘triple’ of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are still the major apps at the core of the Office experience.

We have no doubt anyone working in an office environment will make great use of these applications. As noted, little has changed in terms of the apps from the previous version of Office, and the iterative changes promised over the next few years will likely not make any major changes. You will know exactly what you’re going to get with these apps now and more importantly in the future.

If you need extra features consider purchasing Office 2016 using the product key as a one-time purchase.

Once you pass the two-year mark, you’ll pay more money per year to keep using Office 365 than the cost of the one-time purchase for Office 2016.
