How Camfil Commercial Air Filters Can Help Eliminate Auto Repair Shop Pollution

Riverdale, NJ, 12/22/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

One of the biggest sources of bad air quality is auto repair shop pollution, which is often due to a combination of hazardous wastes, chemicals and other processes that generate particulates that can be harmful, especially to people with breathing disorders.

The unique aspect of many auto repair shops is that while they are technically built outdoors, the enclosed nature of many of the work areas traps pollution triggered by these shops in a very similar way to an indoor facility.

As a result, auto shop owners must have the same urgency in establishing an effective air filtration system as the owner of a restaurant or lab, due to the threat of contaminants that can affect workers.

Factors Contributing to Auto Repair Shop Pollution

There are several factors that contribute to the poor air quality at many auto repair shops throughout the U.S.

Auto repair jobs such as changing motor oil and transmission fluid, and disassembling engine components often causes leaks and spills of chemicals that can atomize and become airborne.

In addition, any auto repair shop that does paint work on vehicles must utilize spray paint that can also have a high level of toxicity.

Auto repair technicians also use solvents for the purpose of cleaning or degreasing engine components. These solvents include trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride and perchloroethylene.

All of these solvents have the capacity to transform into volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under the heat and pressure that is often present in auto repair shops.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has defined VOCs as any compounds in liquid form that become vapor or gas, and contains oxygen, hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromide, sulfur or nitrogen.

When VOCs are released outdoors they create a smog or haze-like effect that is seen in many major cities throughout the world such as Los Angeles and Beijing.

When released indoors or in an outdoor area that is enclosed on three sides, studies have shown that VOCs can lead to difficulty breathing, headaches, fatigue, nausea, skin disorders and possible damage to organs such as the liver and kidney.

Possible Clean Air Solutions

In an effort to lower the amount of contaminants, some auto repair shop owners have implemented some clean air solutions.

One example is that some of these owners have purchased aqueous cleaning systems instead of aerosol cleaning systems to clean engine components and other car parts.

Aerosol cleaners often contain acetone, toluene, xylene, methanol and ethyl benzene, which are solvents that are potentially harmful when inhaled or when they touch a person’s skin.

Some studies have shown that ethyl benzene may cause cancer in animals, and prolonged exposure to these solvents can lead to health issues related to the nervous system, including damage to the nerves in the hands, arms, legs and feet.

Another example of clean air solutions that some auto repair shop owners have implemented is ensuring that used fluids such as old motor oil and coolant is enclosed in a secure storage area, and that floor drain openings are covered so that fumes cannot easily escape into the air.

Camfil Offers Full-Service Air Filtration

Although these clean air solutions will undoubtedly improve the air quality at auto repair shops, only a complete air filtration strategy can ensure the elimination of many of the airborne contaminants at these facilities.

For more than 50 years, Camfil has been a leader in the commercial air filter industry, guided by the principle that clean air should be a human right. Camfil offers a number of commercial air filters that are not only affordable, but also provide energy savings. Camfil’s “green” air filters are designed to reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent because they are longer lasting and require fewer change outs during the year.

Camfil’s complete line of containment systems, high temperature filters, air purifiers and air cleaners can help lower auto repair shop pollution, and improve air quality for employees as well as customers.

When Your Job Leads To Substance Abuse Vs Substance Abuse Leading To Joblessness

New Jersey, 12/23/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

One of the most enduring myths surrounding drug and alcohol abuse is that addiction always leads to joblessness, or that people with addiction disorders float from job to job, unable to hold down steady employment for any length of time.

In reality, the majority of people who suffer substance abuse and addiction are employed. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), 70 percent of American workers who use illegal substances are employed.

The NCADD also points outs several startling facts about what addiction in the workplace looks like and just how many people it affects.

An analysis of workplace fatalities revealed that 11 percent involved alcohol in the victim’s system.
Marijuana and cocaine are the top two most abused drugs among American workers. Prescription drugs are a close third.
A study of hospital emergency rooms showed that 35 percent of patients admitted for an occupation injury were at-risk drinkers.

Is Your Job a High-Risk Profession?

Furthermore, certain professions put an individual at a higher risk for developing a substance abuse problem. The jobs most closely associated with high rates of alcohol abuse include mining, construction, hotel and restaurant workers, and workers in arts and entertainment. Occupations with the highest rates of illegal drug use include hotel and restaurant workers, individuals in the arts and entertainment industries, and management professionals.

In some cases, company culture or peer pressure pushes a worker to use drugs or consume alcohol. If an individual is working long hours, followed by nightly trips to the bar for happy hour, what starts out as a quick round of drinks with friends can become a pattern of negative behavior that leads to abuse.

In other situations, high stress levels and a competitive or demanding environment can cause a worker to self-medicate by turning to drugs or alcohol.

Substance Abuse at Work Can Lead to Accidents

Whether you’re a construction worker or a corporate manager, alcohol and drug abuse can cause impairment and delayed reaction times that put you in danger of experiencing a serious work-related injury.

Individuals who abuse drugs and alcohol are also more likely to engage in dangerous activities. They may also suffer a lack of focus that prevents them from fulfilling their job duties and eventually leads to demotion or termination.

Federal law prohibits employers from firing employees who seek substance abuse treatment. Under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), employees are entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave. The FMLA only applies to employers with 50 or more employees who work within 75 miles of the company’s main location, however, some state laws provide additional protection for workers who need time off to seek medical treatment.

How Hospital Design and Construction Can Help Improve Poor Hospital Air Quality

Riverdale, NJ, 12/22/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Outdoor air pollution is a serious threat, especially in health care facilities that are supposed to be sterile and clean, so health-compromised building occupants are not jeopardized though serious infections or breathing related illnesses.

In fact, infections in hospitals have become a big problem throughout the U.S.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are more than 600,000 people in the U.S. each year who develop infections in hospitals, and 75,000 of them will die.

That means that an astounding 12 percent of the people who develop infections during hospital stays will die, which is too high a number for facilities that are intended to save people’s lives.

And while bacteria that originate in IV lines and tubes cause many of the infections, some of the infections originate through airborne viruses and bacteria that find the ideal environment inside a hospital, and spread.

For example, C. diff, which is a virulent type of bacteria that can cause a variety of ailments, including severe diarrhea, and can live on surfaces for days.

That means that a hospital worker with C. diff on a pair of gloves who touches a curtain that separates two patients, can transfer the bacteria to that curtain.

And without proper air filtration devices, that bacteria can spread and infect people who frequent that area.

Common Contaminants Affecting Hospital Air Quality

Hospitals are unique in that infections reign wherever a person goes, and the fact that they are contained environments in which infected people are in close proximity with non-infected people, creates a cauldron in which the spread of infection is relatively quick.

Airborne contaminants fare no differently in hospitals, as they can flourish in an environment that incubates their qualities in a way that has negative consequences on good health.

Another common type of contaminant in a hospital can include mold such as Aspergillus, which results from excessive moisture and creates spores that can become airborne with the slightest disturbance.

Studies have also shown the presence of airborne viruses and fungi that are propagated  by moisture and water can cling to ducts and vents, and spread throughout a hospital when cool air or heat blows through the HVAC system.

These contaminants can have a serious effect on patients who have suppressed or weakened immune systems, and who are much more susceptible to lower grade airborne bacteria and viruses that would not affect people with healthy immune systems.

How Hospital Design and Construction Can Help with Air Quality

Poor hospital air quality is usually a perfect storm of bad ventilation, inadequate HVAC systems, and a lack of proper air filtration systems to ensure that contaminants drawn from polluted outdoor air are eliminated.

Hospitals that are not built to keep airborne contaminants from escaping into other rooms may also be at a higher risk of rampant infections.

That’s why some hospitals are designing their rooms to help restrict the spread of airborne contaminants, by keeping patients isolated to one location.

Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas accomplished this goal by building an emergency room with an HVAC system that used displacement ventilation, in which air that circulates through the room flows through a return duct that has a HEPA filter that eliminates a high amount of particulates and infectious airborne organisms.

That means that the air that flows back into the room has been filtered to a high level, helping to restrict the spread of contaminants.

In addition, some hospitals are choosing to renovate with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating systems, which reduce energy costs, improve ventilation and contribute to a greater level of good indoor air quality.

Camfil’s Clean Air Solutions

For more than 50 years, Camfil has been committed to providing affordable and energy-efficient commercial air filtration solutions to clients throughout the U.S., with the guiding principle that clean air should be a human right.

Hospitals seeking to ensure the safety of their patients and staff can benefit from a consultation with a Camfil representative, who can offer a number of clean air solutions.

From conducting on-site tests to evaluating hospital air filters quality, to providing industrial HEPA filters, devices that create negative pressure and containment systems, Camfil is the one-stop shop for all of a hospital’s air filtration needs.

18 Wheeler Accident Lawyer Discusses Idaho Trucker Deemed an “Imminent Hazard to Public Safety”

Dallas, 12/22/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Just when you think it doesn’t get much more dangerous than a trucker texting and driving behind the wheel, an Idaho truck driver has been ordered off the road after an investigation revealed he was high on meth, driving distracted, and in violation of the federal hours-of-service rules at the time of a fatal accident.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Idaho truck driver has been declared an “imminent hazard to public safety.”

In January 2015, the truck driver was fired after he failed a mandatory drug screening when he tested positive for methamphetamine. Under FMCSA rules, a truck driver can return to the road after a failed drug test, however, the driver must first undergo additional testing and complete other steps before qualifying to drive commercially again. The FMCSA reports that the Idaho trucker did not follow proper procedures.

Instead, he operated a truck while still officially disqualified from driving. Tragically, on November 9, 2016, he caused a fatal accident when he struck and killed a motorist who was standing next to a disabled vehicle.

When the FMCSA investigated the crash, the trucker admitted he had recently used meth. The truck driver was also discovered to have been in violation of the hours-of-service rules when he struck the motorist. The Idaho trucker also acknowledged he had been texting behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

The average motorist would be a serious hazard on the road if he or she were high on drugs, distracted, and going on too little sleep. It’s terrifying to think of the driver of an 80,000-pound vehicle hitting the road in that state. Obviously, any individual who drives under the influence of drugs is an imminent threat to their own safety and the safety of anyone on the road.

Drug Testing Rules for Truck Drivers

The FMCSA has specific rules for drug and alcohol testing for truck drivers. To operate a commercial vehicle, drivers must pass pre-employment substance abuse screenings. They are also required to take a substance abuse test after any accident.

Additionally, truckers are subject to random drug testing at any point during the year, and employers are allowed to give drug tests if they have a “reasonable suspicion” that a driver is using drugs or alcohol.

Texas truck accident lawyer Amy Witherite says, “Unfortunately, some drivers fail to comply with the required tests. Additionally, some commercial carriers allow their drivers to bend the rules or to get behind the wheel without passing a drug test or following through with the return-to-duty rules. When these drivers are allowed on the road, serious and fatal accidents can happen.”

Attorney Witherite adds that anyone who has been injured by a truck driver, or anyone who has lost a loved one in a semi-truck accident, should watch these videos by Texas truck accident lawyer and contact 1-800-TRUCK-WRECK about their case right away.

Solo Drinking Linked To Higher Risk Of Alcoholism & Drug Abuse For Teens

New Jersey, 12/21/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Parents today have a lot more to worry about than parents from just a generation ago. Social media has opened gateways to unprecedented connectivity that allows young people to have almost unlimited information literally at their fingertips. The problem is that teens generally don’t have the social maturity to filter out potentially negative influences, including those that encourage them to experiment with drugs and alcohol, leading to alcoholism and drug abuse.

Peer pressure has always been a teenage problem, and most teens encounter pressure to consume drugs or alcohol at some point. However, today’s teenagers are burdened by 24/7 social expectations. The pervasiveness of social media has caused teens to begin experimenting with substance abuse at an increasingly earlier age. In the U.S., the average age for a child’s first drink of alcohol is now 13 for girls and 11 for boys.

In the case of alcohol, consumption doesn’t always stop at the experimentation stage. For certain teens, drinking at a young age leads to future substance abuse.

Drinking Alone Puts Teens at a Higher Risk for Substance Abuse

Although it might make more sense that teens who drink with friends would have a higher risk of developing alcohol dependency down the road, the opposite is true.

In fact, studies show that teens who drink alone are the ones more likely to struggle with alcoholism as they enter adulthood. In a joint study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, over 700 young adults were asked about their drinking habits. Researchers found that teens and 20-somethings who drank alone had a 50 percent higher chance of developing alcoholism by age 25 than their counterparts who drank with others.

According to researchers, young people who drink alone may be turning to alcohol in an attempt to cope with emotional disturbances, depression, and negative external factors.

The Alcohol Problem in the United States

Although the abuse of prescription painkillers has received a great deal of attention over the past few years, alcoholism remains the leading substance abuse problem in this country. Alcohol kills 88,000 Americans every year, making it the fourth-leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

Moreover, a significant portion of individuals with an alcohol use disorder are young people. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that about 679,000 children and teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 had some form of alcohol dependency in 2014.

Is Your Child Struggling with Alcohol Use Disorder?

Alcoholism is not just an “adult” problem. If your child or teen is consuming alcohol, it’s important to get help as early as possible. At Summit Behavioral Health, we offer a variety of programs for teens. Speak to an addiction specialist today to get answers and explore options.

New Jersey Substance Abuse Treatment Center- 4 Common Rehab Myths

New Jersey, 12/21/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Entertainment news headlines often feature stories about celebrities that have entered rehab facilities for one reason or another. There are even reality TV shows about substance abuse treatment centers. But are these really accurate depictions of what rehab is like? And is rehab something out of reach for most people?

Rehab and substance abuse treatment is a mystery to many people. For one thing, not everyone feels comfortable discussing drug and alcohol abuse, which means rehab can sometimes seem like it’s cloaked in secrecy.

The good news is that much of what you may have heard about rehab is misleading. Here are four common myths about rehab.

Myth #1: Only Celebrities and the Wealthy Can Afford Rehab

The term “rehab” derives its name from rehabilitation, and often “residential rehabilitation,” which describes an inpatient treatment center. However, rehab programs vary widely, and the best rehab treatment plan is the one best suited to you.

Furthermore, rehab is not limited to the rich and famous. There are excellent options for a variety of budgets, and many insurance plans cover the cost of treatment. At Summit Behavioral Health, we offer both outpatient and residential treatment plans, as well as medical detox.

Myth #2: Rehab Is a Last Resort

You don’t have to exhaust all other options or complete a series of steps to be eligible for rehab, nor does your addiction disorder have to pass a so-called severity test before you are approved for treatment.

Alcohol and drug abuse affects everyone differently. Many successful people struggle with addiction, and there are many people who manage to run households and hold down a demanding job while struggling with alcohol or drug abuse. They are just as deserving of help as anyone else. You don’t need to delay treatment until you have lost your job or your home.

Myth #3: Detox Is Painful and Makes You Sick

In cases of serious drug or alcohol dependence, quitting on your own may not be safe. In some cases, the withdrawal symptoms are intolerable and even dangerous to your health. Medical detox is a way to manage the withdrawal process at a safe and reasonable pace that alleviates pain and provides mental and physical support.

Myth #4: Undergoing Rehab Can Jeopardize Your Job or Your Custody Rights

Many people fear that going through with a rehab plan will result in being fired from their job. For people with young children, they worry that a history of rehab on their health record will jeopardize their ability to raise their children.

Federal law—specifically the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family Medical Leave Act—guarantees workers the time off they need to attend to a serious medical issue. These laws also prohibit employers for firing workers for obtaining treatment.

Similarly, the majority of state courts have adopted a “best interests of the child” standard for child custody and visitation that require courts to decide child custody matters with the child’s best interests in mind. No child is well-served by having a parent who refuses to get help for a substance abuse disorder. On the contrary, a parent’s decision to get help and appropriate treatment demonstrates that the parent is actively engaged in providing a stable, loving home and environment for the child.

Johnny Depp Agrees to Pay Amber Heard $7 Million. North Carolina Divorce Lawyer Discusses Divorce Settlements

Raleigh, NC, 12/21/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

After some apparent feet-dragging, Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp has agreed to pay his ex-wife Amber Heard the $7 million settlement the couple agreed to in their divorce. One report says Depp initially balked at giving the money directly to Heard, but has since agreed to pay her rather than a third party.

The couple, who were married for 15 months, have agreed to settle their divorce privately after Heard alleged that Depp had been physically and verbally violent toward her numerous times, including striking her in the face with a mobile phone. In her motion for a domestic violence restraining order, Heard included photos showing her with a bruised face and cut lip. Heard has stated that she will donate the entire $7 million settlement to charities that help victims of domestic violence.

Although most divorce cases do not unfold in the public eye in such a manner, the case has drawn attention to the important issue of domestic violence, particularly how polarizing these cases can be for both parties. Regardless of how well you know a couple, no one but the parties in the marriage truly know what occurs behind closed doors and during private moments in their own home. Whether you’re a megawatt celebrity or an everyday person, it is an unfortunate reality that people tend to “take sides” in these types of cases. This can be extremely stressful and hurtful for the parties involved.

Are Divorce Settlements Normal?

Depp and Heard settled their divorce, with both releasing a joint statement to the public. In the average divorce, the parties don’t release a public statement. Furthermore, Depp and Heard were not legally obligated to make a public statement, however, it’s possible the statement and its contents were negotiated by the parties as part of their settlement. For example, the statement says that neither party made allegations for “financial gain.” This could be aimed at speculation that Heard accused Depp of domestic violence in an attempt to secure a large settlement.

With respect to divorce settlements, it is quite typical for a divorcing couple to end their marriage in advance of a trial. Although it’s difficult to put a definitive number on how many divorces settle, it is more common for a divorce to settle than to end up in court.

North Carolina divorce lawyer Lori Vitale explains, “There are many factors that influence a divorce settlement. Some of these factors include the length of the marriage, the parties’ incomes, and if the couple has any children.”

Vitale Family Law: North Carolina Divorce Lawyers

If you’re thinking about getting a divorce, and you are a victim of domestic violence, it’s important to contact a divorce lawyer right away. There are steps you can take to ensure you are safe from a violent or abusive spouse, including asking the court for a protective order.

CEO Ken Goodgames Resigns; Interim CEO Named

Dallas, 12/21/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Nonprofit Becoming a Fully Integrated Services Delivery Model

Ken Goodgames has resigned as CEO from Transformance, the Dallas-based nonprofit where he promoted organizational change from the top down, beginning with changing the name of the previous Consumer Credit Counseling of Greater Dallas. Goodgames has been appointed CEO of the Community Council of Greater Dallas, effective Dec. 20. Transformance has installed Dr. Daniel B. Prescott as interim CEO until a full-time replacement can be found.

“Leaving Transformance was a difficult and personal decision,” said Goodgames. “We’ve achieved so much in the way we deliver services in just two short years. I know that Transformance will continue to thrive under the very capable leadership of its Board of Directors and its current team of leadership executives. My plan forward is to continue expanding my role as a servant leader within the Dallas nonprofit community.”

Transformance, an integrated financial capability nonprofit, has undergone a real transformation of its own under Goodgames’ leadership—from a core competency of financial literacy to becoming a fully integrated services delivery model. These efforts were based on the Annie E. Casey Working Family Success Model, which stresses the three key components of financial education, social services and workforce development. Here are some of Transformance’s strategic examples of implementing this approach:

• Children’s Health – piloted a program for 15 Lake Highlands’ families with uninsured children, restricted to those with at least one child having an ongoing health issue. Provided nutritious food assistance and medical resource/placement assistance

• Community Counseling – formed a partnership with Safe Conversations, a nonprofit dedicated to providing couples, families and organizations with communication techniques proven to strengthen relationships at home, work, and school. The Transformance staff is now certified through Safe Conversations training sessions

• Job Placement – created a proprietary employment program with GameStop, which included job training, placement and even transportation services for qualified job-seekers

• Veterans Assistance – formed alliances with veteran service organizations (VSOs) such as NPower and Grace After Fire to provide job placement, housing assistance and counseling

• Education – created mobile apps and online games, Pocket Change USA and Pocket Change KIDS, to teach financial literacy skills through a gamified learning process

“The pride I take in what the board, stakeholders and staff have achieved at Transformance is nothing short of inspiring for just two short years,” said Goodgames. “This organization will continue to set a first-class example for what servant leadership can accomplish in developing sustainable communities.”

As an organization, Transformance pledges to continue their growth and outreach, enhancing the vision of support and coaching for those they serve. The nonprofit has a rich past, and a rewarding future ahead.

For more information on Transformance, please visit www.transformanceusa.org.

Operation Kindness Gives The Gift Of Life To Dog With A Disability

Carrollton, TX, 12/21/2016 /SubmitPressRelease123/

‘Tis the season of giving and Operation Kindness – North Texas’ original and largest no-kill animal shelter – has given the gift of life to Garth, a 10-month-old German Shepherd mix. When Garth arrived at Operation Kindness in October as a transfer from a shelter partner in Stephenville, Texas, he was unable to stand. The shelter partner did not have the equipment on-site to treat his injuries, he soon became at risk of being euthanized and the people in Stephenville reached out to Operation Kindness for help.

With the help of the on-site medical hospital at Operation Kindness, Garth has been receiving the medical treatment he needs to improve his walking. The medical team and the consulting neurologist suspect Garth endured a brain injury, possibly from a virus or trauma that caused neurological issues that impact his balance. Today Garth is happy, active and improving his functioning with medication that helps his brain communicate with his body. He still faces and will probably continue to face challenges with his movements and some difficulty walking on slippery surfaces, but has the energy and attitude to overcome these challenges.

“Garth is one of the happiest puppies you will ever meet,” said Jim Hanophy, CEO of Operation Kindness. “He has faced many challenges in his short life, but as soon as you meet him, you will find that he is just as energetic and playful as any other puppy. We are so grateful for the services our on-site medical center is able to provide to injured animals like Garth. We have enjoyed watching his progress and are confident that he will make a wonderful companion.”

Operation Kindness is currently accepting applications to help Garth find a forever home for the holidays. To ensure Garth stays happy and healthy in his new home, Operation Kindness will provide six months of follow-up care to monitor his neurological status. The shelter is also in discussions with a program at Texas A&M Commerce to build a cart for Garth to assist with his walking.

In celebration of the holiday season, Operation Kindness will host holiday pet adoptions at Galleria Dallas and Gift Wrapping for Kindness at Barnes and Noble – Park and Preston, and have holiday gifts available for purchase from Operation Kindness’ Kindness Katalog.
