January 06, 2020 – – Chantilly, VA based Stone Ridge Montessori’s students were very excited to experience the many fun activities the preschool had to offer during the month of December. During this period, the preschool decided to give their students the opportunity to learn about and, in some ways, experience the holidays and events that take place in December. Many of the events were discussed in great detail on the school’s Facebook page, which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/StoneRidgeMontessori.
The children at Stone Ridge, for instance, had the opportunity to learn about Hanukkah, a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Also known as the Festival of Lights, it is observed for eight nights and days, beginning any time from late November to late December. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of the menorah, and Jewish people celebrate the festival by playing games of dreidel as well as eating oil based foods like latkes, sufganiyot and dairy foods.
Stone Ridge Montessori’s students learned about Hanukkah through fun and interesting projects and activities earlier in the month, and they were excited to get to know more about how some groups of people celebrate different events around December. They even made Hanukkah greeting cards, which helped them feel truly involved in the festival they were learning about.
The children were also encouraged to decorate Christmas trees in their classrooms. Christmas is perhaps the most well-known December holiday, and many people celebrate the 25th of December every year regardless of their religion. The students at Stone Ridge Montessori had the opportunity to work on their fine motor skills, concentration and aesthetics while decorating Christmas trees. They were excited to be involved in decorating the Christmas trees and learned quite a lot during the process.
They also got to take part in the season’s activities by creating Christmas trees using various art materials. Not only did this help the children learn more about Christmas while also feeling very involved in the holiday, it taught them to be more creative. By allowing them to create their own interpretation of a Christmas tree, Stone Ridge Montessori managed to make it so every child had the chance to create a unique piece expressing how they feel about the holiday.
December means winter, and the kids were encouraged to get into the winter spirit by building their own snowmen. It was another fun arts and crafts project that encouraged the children to create something expressing how they view and feel about winter. They had a lot of fun putting together their own snowmen, and it really helped them get into the winter spirit. All these activities were in line with the Montessori goal of producing well-balanced individuals who are in touch with their environment.

“We are proud to offer you an authentic Montessori experience based on the findings of Dr. Maria Montessori,” says the school. “Dr. Maria Montessori believed the period from birth to six years are the most formative years which set the foundation upon which a child’s life will be built. At Stone Ridge Montessori, our programs focus on this time period. We also offer a quality After School Care program for children ages 6-12 years. During the first stage of development (birth to six years), children transition from being unconscious to conscious learners. Dr. Montessori believed that children are born with all the seeds of their development. Our highly trained Montessori educators and the prepared environments of our classrooms provide just the right support to help children reach their full potential.”
The school invites interested parents to schedule a tour and visit their authentic Montessori classrooms in order to see what makes them stand out from other schools in the area.
