Dr. Crew Tells Health Media Now that NeutroPhase has Dramatically Improved the Care of Patients With Deadly ‘Flesh-Eating’ Disease
DALE CITY, CA / ACCESSWIRE / March 30, 2015 / The National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation (NNFF) today announced that Dr. John Crew, director of the Advanced Wound Care Center at Seton Medical Center in Daly City, Calif, has appeared on Health Media Now to discuss the major advance he pioneered in the treatment of deadly necrotizing fasciitis or ‘flesh-eating’ disease.
“This interview with Dr. Crew will help us get the message out that we can save patients from losing their arms, legs and other body parts-or their lives-from this terrible disease,” said NNFF co-founder and executive director Jacqueline Roemmele.
In the interview, which was broadcast live on March 11, Dr. Crew explained to Health Media Now host Denise Messenger that necrotizing fasciitis occurs after a bacterial infection when bacterial toxins and the reaction of the body’s own immune system eat away tissue and stop the natural wound healing process. “Without treatment, 70-80% of victims die,” Dr. Crew said. “Even with aggressive standard treatment, up to 20% die. Many lose limbs or other body parts,” he said.
Dr. Crew has developed a new approach using a product called NeutroPhase(R), a wound cleanser made by NovaBay(R) Pharmaceuticals, Inc. NeutroPhase is the only skin and wound cleanser to contain Neutrox(TM), NovaBay’s pure, patented, stable form of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) that contains no bleach impurities. HOCl is a natural compound produced by white blood cells as a first defense against microbial invaders. Lab tests show that, in solution, it not only kills bacteria, but it also neutralizes the toxins that kill tissue. “HOCl is the exact substance God created inside a white blood cell to kill bacteria,” said Dr. Crew in the radio interview.
Those properties are crucial, Dr. Crew explained. Irrigated into a ‘flesh-eating’ wound, the HOCl as part of this disease management regimen appears to stop the death of the tissue and allows the wound to begin the natural healing process. Dr. Crew has now overseen treatment of 36 cases of the disease over the last several years using NeutroPhase. In all of those cases, “we haven’t lost a life or a limb,” Dr. Crew said. “We are really excited about it. We feel that we have something that can help you.”
Some of those patients are Lori Madsen, Jared Hamilton and Michael Meillon, and they have described their own successful recovery in interviews. Dr. Crew has also described the use of NeutroPhase in journals like WOUNDS, and this use has also been featured in newspaper articles. His groundbreaking work has earned him a nomination for the Lister Legacy Prize, an award presented by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
“We have such confidence in this new approach that we have named NeutroPhase as the official wound cleanser of the NNFF,” said Roemmele. The NNFF has also teamed up with NovaBay and Dr. Crew to offer NeutroPhase, along with expert advice on how to use it, free of charge anywhere in the world to patients with the disease. “If you call me from Timbuktu and tell me you have it-and your doctor will use it-NovaBay will send it to you immediately and it won’t cost you anything,” said Dr. Crew.
Dr. Crew added that the only “downside” to NeutroPhase is “not using it.” However, he said that it has been an uphill battle to convince other doctors of the benefits of the new approach. To get more doctors on board, Dr. Crew has been giving talks around the country and giving interviews to important outlets like Health Media News, he said. “I’m so excited to get on the trail and tell people that this is something that will really save lives and limbs,” Dr. Crew told Messenger.

The National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation (NNFF) is a 501c3 non-profit organization established in 1997 by two survivors of the disease. Since that time, NNFF has evolved to become the world’s leading resource for information regarding necrotizing fasciitis, as well as repository of cases reported worldwide. Its mission is to educate for public awareness regarding recognition of symptoms and preventative measures; to advocate research; to offer resources; and to offer support for those affected by necrotizing fasciitis, so that it may help save lives. The two founders of the organization, Jacqueline A. Roemmele and Donna Batdorff, will soon release a second edition of their top-selling non-fiction book “Surviving the Flesh-eating Bacteria.”
