Immortalitea Announces New Study Suggesting Gynostemma May Delay The Adverse Side Effects of Some Parkinson’s Medications

GRANDVILLE, MI / ACCESSWIRE / May 27, 2015 / This month Korean researchers announced in the journal BMC Neuroscience the results of a study into the effects of the herb Gynostemma Pentaphyllum when used in conjunction with the most common treatment of Parkinson’s Disease (PD), L-DOPA. 

L-DOPA is a chemical compound produced in the human body that facilitates the body’s production of dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline) collectively known as catecholamines. L-DOPA is the most popular and effective current treatment for Parkinson’s disease and is sold under the trade names Sinemet, Parcopa, Atamet, Stalevo, Madopar, and Prolopa.

Ironically, one of the adverse side-effects of this popular treatment is a condition known as dyskinesia which clinically appears similar to the motor tremors caused by Parkinson’s itself and which have a similar adverse effects on patient lifestyles.

The medication initially helps the condition but as effectiveness wears off and dosages increase, the medication causes irreversible involuntary muscle movements or “tics.”

The herb Gynostemma pentaphylllum (popularly known as Jiaogulan) has been shown in previous research to have therapeutic benefits for neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinsons. In this study researchers at the Center for Bioresource and Health in Korea investigated the effect of co-treatment of Parkinsons with Gynostemma and L-DOPA medications.

The researchers report in the April Edition of BMC-Neuroscience that Gynostemma significantly reduced the development of L-DOPA induced dyskinesia without compromising the beneficial effect of L-DOPA for Parkinsons disease.

Dr. Lynch’s university tours help Houston-area students prep for college

University of St. Thomas professor is seeking funding so that needy students can participate.

Dr. Brenda Lynch of Houston is a lifelong educator who is dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults. In 1999, Lynch and her husband, Norman, founded Love & Truth Ministries, a nonprofit organization that organizes activities for students, including annual out-of-state college tours for high school students.

“I have a passion to help as many children as I can during my lifetime,” says Lynch, a psychology professor at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. “In addition to teaching, I help school children by preparing their teachers to become school counselors. I’ve always worked hard to prepare children for a successful adult life.”

For the past five years, Love & Truth Ministries has enabled high school students to take extensive college tours, helping them learn about their options in higher education. The tours include colleges not only in Texas & HBCU’s, but and have taken students from as far away as Yale University in Connecticut and Stanford University in California in previous years.

Lynch ensures that the bus ride itself is an educational experience by making the vehicle a “Rolling University,” in which students watch DVDs and learn about transitioning to higher education as well as the history of the areas that are visited.

This summer’s tour will focus on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Because the organization is a nonprofit and receives funding from donations, the cost for the tour is just $650. That includes bus transportation, meals and hotels.

Still, some students lack the financial means to participate and miss out on this opportunity. “Those who need it most can’t afford to go,” says Lynch. “Every year, we leave behind busloads of deserving but poor students who can’t pay the fee.”

Donations of any amount are welcome and all donors will receive a letter qualifying the contribution for a federal tax credit. The goal is to fund 10 students ($6,500).

A $100 pledge gets your name on the website and communication from the funded student during the tour.

“Although our goal of $6,500 for 10 students, we can – and really need – to take many more students,” says Lynch. “This is a very valuable opportunity and we’re trying to extend it to as many students as we can.”
