Dusk vs Day Shots: Dramatic Differences in Architectural Photography

October 29, 2015 – When considering an architectural photography portfolio, most clients plan only for a daytime photo shoot, not considering any evening shots. However, many dusk shots can create a much more interesting range of images. It’s a good idea to always take the time to experience a space throughout the day and evening to evaluate how the changing light and shadows will affect the shots.

I am constantly educating clients on the importance of timing when shooting interior photography. Virtually the same shot at different times of the day make a huge difference. When you see the space at two different times, it clearly illustrates what light does to the color, texture and drama of a space.

Especially in hotel photography, where photos need to create a particular mood, a dusk shot can be much more inviting, helping the viewer to imagine themselves relaxing in that room. Lighting is crucial here, creating two very different feelings.

Simple changes in lighting make big differences in exterior photography as well. In an exterior shot, shadows and sunlight are very important. Seemingly insignificant additions add life to otherwise dark areas of any dusk photo. Most photographers simply take day shots. Day shots are nice, but dusk shots often tell a more compelling and dramatic story. The extra time spent to get the right dusk image can make all the difference in a portfolio.

To best showcase your property, you need an assortment of interesting images. The investment in both day and evening shots gives you the flexibility to convey a range of moods and uses in your marketing materials. If you are looking to create a distinctive portfolio for your hotel or other structure, please contact me at Architectural Photography, Inc at 888-788-5554. I am committed to creating artistic and impactful images that showcase your property in the best possible light.

FiveEight Apparel: Better Fitting Clothing for Shorter Men

Manhattan, NY – On October 12 2015, FiveEight Apparel launched a Kickstarter campaign for their new line of proportionate, better fitting clothing for men up to FiveEight. The company’s first line features The Five Eight Chino, The 925 Shirt and the Weekender.

“33% of the US Adult male population is under 5’8″ making it one of the most underserved markets in fashion,” says co-founder Elizabeth Stoian, “We are changing that with our first line created of clothing that is proportionately re-designed for the shorter male. We are looking at every aspect of our garment such as the sleeves, length and tapers points to create the best fitting clothing for our market.”

FiveEight came about after some big realizations about the current state of the fashion industry. In today’s fashion world, there is a lack diversity in the representation of size and body type, as well as racial diversity. This lack of diversity leads to an image that is marketed and sold to the masses but is not representative of the diverse world that we live in today.

Designed in New York and made in the USA, this initial line caters to men that are 5’8” and under. This is a first step in the right direction of where FiveEight Apparel wants to be, and the team is inviting the Kickstarter community to join in and contribute to this project.

“We are creating a brand, but more importantly, we are building a platform to celebrate and promote diversity in fashion,” explains Michael Valdez, Founder, “FiveEight Apparel was created with diversity at its core and we are incorporating this principle into all aspects of our business including: models, designers, influencers, decision makers and the clothing itself.”

In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including a #Fashiondiversity campaign bracelet and a chance to vote on the next collection for $10, a campaign t-shirt and bracelet with exclusive pre-order access to the Spring Collection for $50 and more. Backers can also pledge the early bird price of $75 for one pair of Chinos or a button down and $500 for one of every item in the collection!

Always Remember Your Beloved Pet with a Custom Charm from Pets’ Friends Jewelry Company

Murfreesboro, TN – On October 22 2015, Alina Burleyson launched a Kickstarter campaign for Pets’ Friends Jewelry Company, a design studio specializing in custom one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces centered around your pet.

“You send us a photo of your beloved pet and I design a 3D work of art that I place into a piece of jewelry so you can always keep them close,” says Burleyson, “We offer the custom work in two choices either a pendant or charm. You pick the shape of your pendant or charm to put your pet’s image onto. The available shapes are round, oval, or rectangle.”

The inspiration for this project came from the creator’s first beloved pet, a French bulldog named Sam. After receiving positive feedback from her early sales, Burleyson was confident that each of us has or had a special furry friend that you would always want to remember. Now she has turned to crowdfunding to share her unique pendants with a larger audience. With this Kickstarter project there is no better way to memorialize your pet.

Here is how the process works. You send the company a high resolution photo of your pet and they take that digital image and make a 3D model of the photo. The piece is designed using the 3D digital image of your pet that is incorporated into a piece of Jewelry. Once the design is complete, the piece is 3D printed to form a mold and cast it in your choice of metal. The better the photo of your pet the better result and finer the details of the finished piece will be.

“After years of studying jewelry design and working in the jewelry industry I wanted to combine my passion of jewelry design and love of animals so I came up with a concept of bringing my two favorite things together,” the creator explains.

In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including a special signed thank you card from Alina and her dog (Daisy) for $15, a silver paw or bone charm for $35 and more. Backers can also pledge $180 for a silver charm with your pet’s picture on it or $500 for a 14k yellow or white gold charm with your pet’s picture on it.

Turn Bottled Beer into Draft with Beer Kennel

Austin, TX – On October 22 2015, Jeffrey Roberts launched a Kickstarter campaign for Beer Kennel, a CNC machined turbine AC cooled mini-kegerator that will not only tap mini kegs, but turn your bottled beer into draft!

“Beer Kennel makes it easy to bring draft beer into the home,” says the creator, “Our goal is to take the same workmanship which is used in aerospace and medical manufacturing and apply it towards Beer Kennel.”

Whether you want to use a mini keg or turn bottled beer into draft, Beer Kennel is the right solution for you! The stainless steel bottle draft tap easily snaps into bottled beer or you can use the mini keg tap system to securely fit the keg of your choice. Both of these connect to the draft line system to bring CO2 from the tank and serve beer through the faucet.

Now, the team has turned to the Kickstarter community to help fund the final improvements needed to bring the Beer Kennel to market.

“We have a working prototype, but there is still much to be done. However, we know exactly where we are going,” Roberts explains, “When you are a machinist or engineer, every day is solving a problem. So obviously limiting and handling problems in an efficient manner is key to success.”

In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including a titanium bottle opener for $25, an early bird Beer Kennel Basic for $99 and more! Backers can also pledge $175 for Beer Kennel Light (comes with frame and bottle draft system) or $275 for the fully loaded Beer Kennel (that comes with an upgraded draft flow faucet, frame, bottle draft system, turbine system, tank and regulator).

Structurflex Honored with Outstanding Achievement Award for Frame-Supported Structures by Industrial Fabrics Association International

30 Oct, 2015 – Structurflex, one of the world’s leading producers of fabric architecture, was recently recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award for Frame-Supported Structures for work on Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“It is always an honor to receive accolades, but we are especially honored to have received two awards from an organization as prestigious as the Industrial Fabrics Association International. We are very proud of our work on the Corinthians Arena project in particular, as it was a complex, large-scale undertaking that served an integral part in the 2014 World Cup. We were happy to help create a stadium for Brazil’s most popular sports brand, one that will leave a lasting impression on Corinthians fans and soccer fans worldwide,” said Paul Snustead, Business Development and Design Manager at Structurflex.

To complete the project, Structurflex partnered with fabric supplier and producer Ferrari S.A., engineer Werner Sobek, and Architect Anibal Continho, with Structurflex spearheading subcontracting, installation, and project management. The Arena site, located on the east side of Sao Paulo, was converted from a toxic industrial facility to a world class soccer and event space seating 48,000 to 68,000 people that hosted the opening ceremony of 2014’s World Cup. With an objective to create a state-of-the-art sports facility for Brazil’s largest and most renowned soccer team, The Corinthians, Structurflex provided a continuous smooth, thin, and lightweight PVC tensile membrane ceiling measuring 300,000 square foot [28,000 square meters] to visually conceal the roof structure and serve as a projection surface for opening ceremony events. As a fast track design build, the Corinthians project required coordination between several countries – five alone for the membrane portion of the project. Around-the-clock work commenced to ensure the highest quality performance in design, fabrication, and installation. To create a continuous smooth roof, Structurflex developed a custom extrusion, creating the illusion of a seamless panel transition. Installation of the ceiling membrane was particularly challenging; it had to occur from a net, upside down, to produce the desired effect.

In addition to the Outstanding Achievement Award for Frame-Supported Structures, Structurflex was recognized with an Outstanding Achievement Award for Facades for work on Northwestern University’s Visitor’s Center in Chicago, IL.

About Structurflex

Among the world’s leading producers of fabric architecture, Structurflex has over 75 years experience in designing, manufacturing, and installing ETFE, PTFE, and PVC tensile membrane structures and tensile facades internationally. Their immense understanding of the intersections of engineering, construction, and architecture ensures high quality, precision, and functionality. Currently, the company has operations in New Zealand, the United States, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and Brazil.

Kansas City-Based Structurflex Wins 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award for Façades for Work on Northwestern University’s Visitor’s Center in Chicago, IL

30 Oct, 2015 – Structurflex was recently recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award for Façades for work on Northwestern University’s Visitor’s Center in Chicago, IL.

“We are honored to be recognized by such a notable organization as the IFAI. Though we are seasoned in the international design, fabrication, and installation of tensile structures and have a diverse project portfolio, we are particularly excited that this iconic project has received accolades in this year’s IAA,” said Paul Snustead, Business Development and Design Manager at Structurflex. “Both the Visitor’s Center and the adjoining parking garage are integral parts of the historic Northwestern’s campus, reflective of the university’s diversity, culture, and innovation.”

Work on the Visitor’s Center was completed with fabric supplier and producer Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corp., and architect Perkins + Will, with engineering, fabrication, subcontracting, installation, and project management handled by Structurflex. The University’s vision for the Sailing and Visitor Center encompassed a state-of-the-art parking structure serving an imminent need for a parking solution while making a signature statement. The tensile façade was designed to blend with the adjoining development of the Sailing and Visitor’s Center. The project features 94 panels, or approximately 10,000 square feet of PTFE membrane, that were custom-shaped to mimic a wave of water, evoking the sailing theme. Structurflex provided collaboration on the design, engineering of the sails and structural support, plus PTFE fiberglass fabrication and installation. Due to the need to avoid conflict with post-tensioned slabs and rebar in the concrete parking garage, Structurflex collaborated with the contractor to devise a solution for placement of the embedment anchors responsible for attaching the structural framing.

In addition to the Outstanding Achievement Award for Facades, Structurflex also received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Frame-Supported Structures for work on Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Wave Goodbye To Excess Baggage Charges Forever With Weigh-to-fly

Kickstarter Campaign Launching for Revolutionary Smart Luggage Scale

It’s time to smarten-up while travelling with Weigh-to-Fly, a revolutionary extendable luggage scale which sends real-time updates to your phone as you pack your case. It is the ideal travel companion to help you avoid excess baggage charges when you fly.

The device has an adjustable, lightweight, telescopic frame that slides and locks to fit whichever size case you want to take. Once the case is placed on top, the sensors in each of the corners send updates via Bluetooth to the traveller’s smartphone, allowing them to see instantly how close they are to their weight limit as they pack. The smartphone app contains details of every major airline’s weight restrictions so the user simply types in which airline they are flying with. It even takes account of the weight of the device (450g) and the scale’s unique “coat hanger” design means it can also serve as a clothes hanger when you get to your destination. Also incorporated is a proximity sensor, which sends a notification to your phone if you leave your case behind or move too far away from your luggage.

Weigh-to-Fly is the brainchild of Software Electronics Engineer Jamie Cruickshank: “One in five passengers are charged an average of £25 for excess baggage at the airport. In the UK alone, passengers forked out over £1.6 billion in charges in a single year. Multiply this globally and it is a huge problem. Not only is it costing passengers dearly but it causes stress, hassle and inconvenience at the airport.”

He added: “There are other products on the market but these have disadvantages. For example there are cases with the weighing mechanism built in. These limit you to using a single case whereas Weigh-to-Fly can be used with any piece of luggage. Other luggage scales can let you down. They give inaccurate results, break easily or require you to lift heavy bags in order to read the weight. Not to mention the repetitive process of zipping up and weighing your bag every time you add or remove something.”

To fund the development the team is launching a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign which aims to raise £50,000. Some of the rewards include early bird deals and a chance to visit the design team to collect your product in person.

For details of the campaign please visit www.weigh-to-f.ly/kickstarter

The retail price of Weigh-to-Fly is expected to be £69.99… a small price to pay to know you are not going to incur excess charges ever again!
