It was recently revealed that the family of one woman who died of ovarian cancer has turned down a $1 million settlement offer from the pharmaceutical giant, choosing instead to blow the whistle on the company. The family was eventually awarded $72 million in damages. As a result, the Jeffrey Phillips Law Firm is looking into the safety of talcum powder, in preparation for other people filing similar cases.

“We want to congratulate the family of Jackie Fox for their tremendous victory,” says Jeffrey Phillips from Phillips Law Group. “Whenever a case like this is won, inevitably other people start to come forward with similar claims. This is why we have started to investigate the link between Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder and ovarian cancer ourselves. In so doing, we will be better able to represent our clients.”

In 2015, a woman in California was awarded $13 million in damages when she showed that she had developed mesothelioma as a result of the asbestos found in talc powder. The asbestos was subsequently removed by all manufacturers, including Johnson & Johnson. Nevertheless, the link with ovarian cancer persisted in various studies.

In 2003, a review of 16 different studies in which 11,933 women took part showed that the risk of ovarian cancer was increased in those who used talcum powder. Yet, a similar review in 2014 looking at 61,576 was not able to demonstrate the same results.

“The research is still very inconclusive,” adds Jeffrey Phillips. “According to the World Health Organization, talc applied to the genitals is ‘possibly carcinogenic’, but that is the only warning that exists. The Jackie Fox case has set a precedence, however, and there will inevitably be an increase in cases against the pharmaceutical giant, and we want to be ready to take them on.”

Due to the recent verdict, the scientific and legal community are investing far more time and money in researching whether or not there is a link between the powder and ovarian cancer. Jeffrey Phillips will keep clients up to date with findings.
