Are donors more inclined to consider a fundraising appeal featuring someone who looks like them—sharing their race, ethnicity, and/or gender?

Grey Matter and Infinity Concepts dug into this issue in the newly released report Race & Gender in Fundraising: Exploring Potential Bias Among Evangelicals.

Researchers tested ad layouts showing children of different racial/ethnic backgrounds and both genders, using a technique known as monadic testing. Respondents were divided into four equal segments; each segment saw one ad, and their responses were compared with other segments. In this way, people are not directly asked to choose between supporting a boy or supporting a girl, for instance.

Race and Ethnicity

The national sample of 1,010 evangelical Protestants was shown the same ad, but the child pictured was either Asian, Black, Latino, or White.

“It is common in advertising to believe people want to see others like themselves portrayed, and that may be true in a pure consumer context,” said Ron Sellers, President of Grey Matter Research. “We simply do not find that dynamic when people are asked to help hungry children in the US.”

“In a fundraising context, evangelicals do not find pictures of children of their own race or ethnicity more compelling than pictures of other races,” explained Mark Dreistadt, President and CEO of Infinity Concepts. “Nor do they find pictures of their own race less compelling. Race simply does not make a difference.”

While there was no preference for images based on the race or ethnicity of the child, the race or the ethnicity of the adult viewing the image did make a difference.

“Black evangelicals found the ads substantially more compelling than others—no matter which child they saw,” Dreistadt continued. “Black evangelicals were less likely than others to call all the ads discouraging or easy to ignore, and more likely to find them hopeful, realistic, believable, and relatable.”

Boys and Girls

When asked to help children, race/ethnicity does not impact how compelling an ad is. But does gender make a difference? In a word: Yes.

“Men are slightly more likely to rate the ads with the boy as extremely compelling than they are to say this about the ads with the girl,” Sellers said. “Was this just a case of men favoring their own gender? No—women are even more likely than men to feel the ads with the boy are compelling.”

Those differences held true no matter whether the child was pictured smiling or despondent. This finding could have a significant impact on a fundraising campaign.

Takeaways

Regarding race and ethnicity, the report encourages fundraisers not to get caught up in stereotypes.

“What evangelical Protestants really want is to help people, not to help people of their own race or of any specific ethnic background,” Dreistadt said.

But what about gender?

“We would need considerable further testing to know whether the gender bias we saw would exist with images of different age groups, races, and types of organizations,” he said. “At the moment, however, organizations should not consider de-emphasizing images of females but putting forth images, stories, and information that make it clear their work is critical to males and females.”

Or, as Sellers put it, “When an apparent bias exists, ethically, fundraisers should do what they can to help correct that bias through education and communication, not pander to it in hopes of better results.”

People and communities of Wales are invited to celebrate Wales’ flora and fauna in a week dedicated to nature. Wales Nature Week features nature walks, talks and activity days taking place throughout Wales, organised by a range of organisations and individuals coming together for Wales Nature Week. Running between 22nd-30th of July, the theme of this year’s Wales Nature Week is ‘Celebrating Nature’s Treasures.’ Participation is easy, and the majority of the events are free. With a range of events to choose from, there’s something suitable for complete beginners to the more seasoned nature lover.

Announcing this year’s programme of events, Sean McHugh of Wales Biodiversity Partnership said: “Wales Nature Week is a celebration of our oldest heritage – nature. We are inviting people to celebrate Wales’s nature treasures from the iridescent details of a starling’s plumage to our awe-inspiring Welsh landscapes. Nature is for all of us and connecting with nature and sharing our experiences of nature is good for our physical and mental well-being.” We are encouraging people to discover and enjoy nature that and to share their experiences across social media, using the hashtags: #WalesNatureWeek and #NaturesTreasures. 

As well as a coming together of Wales nature lovers on social media, the week of events are highlighting nature-based events being held by many different organisations and groups. Bat walks, red squirrel talk, wildflower spotting, butterfly counts, mini beast hunts and porpoise watching are among a selection of events to enjoy. 

In celebration of Wales Nature Week, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Visitor Centre will be hosting a week-long exhibition of the Park’s Nature’s Treasures. Meet the Neath Port Talbot nature team at the Gnoll Country Park on the 22nd, and the popular Go Wild! festival in Tredegar on the 29th are additional highlights. A flagship nature day at Nantclwyd y Dre, Ruthin on the 30th will be attended by a host of nature conservation organisations and rounds of nature week. “With your support and participation, Wales Nature Week can grow-drawing on your appreciation and love of nature to encourage present and future generations alike to cherish and protect our precious natural heritage”. Bluewater is keeping thirsty fans enjoying the golf at Royal Liverpool hydrated with two of the company’s innovative mega-sized ‘Water Wall’ hydration stations, plus a range of other water stations deployed throughout the venue designed to provide visitors to The 151st Open with a refreshing and sustainable way to quench their thirst without the need for single-use plastic bottles.  

“Gone are the days of lugging around toxic single-use plastic bottles or constantly searching for drinking fountains,” says Philip Russell, Managing Director of Bluewater’s Event organization. “Thanks to Bluewater’s strategically sited 16 hydration stations around the Royal Liverpool venue, players, fans, staff and volunteers will be able to refill with purified and chilled drinking water across the Championship.” Bluewater has also supplied a range of customised stainless steel refillable bottles, which will be available for purchase on site. 

Bluewater’s Water Wall hydration stations have been specially developed for premium events and venues to combine a mass drinking water dispensing solution with a unique brand activation platform. The Water Walls incorporate 55” high-bright TV screens with full content customisation capability. Two Water Walls will be in operation at Royal Liverpool this week: an 8-metre Wall in the main Spectator Village next to The Shop, and a 7-metre Wall directly adjacent to the Mastercard Club.

Unique collaboration 

Mastercard, an Official Patron of The Open, has proudly supported The Open Water Project since 2021. The project, created and instigated by The R&A in collaboration with Bluewater, saw The Open become one of the first major sporting events in the world to completely eliminate single-use plastic water bottles. For every Bluewater stainless steel refillable bottle sold on site, a proportion of revenues are directed towards Priceless Planet Coalition tree planting projects. Mastercard founded the Priceless Planet Coalition in 2020 as a platform for combatting climate change by planting 100 million trees by 2025. Golf fans on site at The Open are being encouraged to make donations to PPC tree planting using the QR codes and tap-and-donate modules integrated within the Water Walls. Direct donation is also available via TheOpen.com/Mastercard
