In observance of International Nelson Mandela Day, the Midrand Police and the Church of Scientology in Castle Kyalami went on a tour to donate toys and clothes to orphanages in the Midrand area as part of their commemoration of Mandela Day. 

Celebrated annually, Mandela Day is a global celebration that takes place on 18 of July to honor the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to take time to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles to create a better Mzansi and to make a positive impact in their own communities. No matter how small the action, this day is about changing the world for the better, just as Nelson Mandela did every day.

Wanting to provide relief to the less fortunate and the most vulnerable, the Midrand Police and Church of Scientology collected donations and toys from the community and then isolated key orphanages in the area and embarked on a day filled with smiles from little orphaned children wherever they went. 

With a convoy of sirens, they stopped at several orphanages donating presents, hygiene supplies and toys, bringing joy in the eyes of the children. 

One of the Officers present, expressed his joy during the tour. “We dedicate this day to selfless giving in honor of our late President Nelson Mandela as he was a very giving person, it’s only right that we follow in his footsteps. Sharing is caring, the hand that gives is the one that is blessed. We need more collaboration with the community because we cannot do it all alone.” 

Alice Meiring of the Church of Scientology, also present during the tour said, “Nelson Mandela is an example of dedication and it is our absolute honor to partake in bringing his ideals of a united society to life. The children were excited when they received their gifts and there is nothing more fulfilling than a happy child. We are always happy to work with our local police and community.” 

According to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the inspiration for the internationally acclaimed hero is about spending 67 minutes out and about doing something helpful for someone else. It could require you to step out of their comfort zone, volunteer and practically lend a hand. Alternatively, people may pledge time, money or items to a cause or charity you support. Many people and businesses choose to group together to do something alongside an existing organization. Others identify a need within their community and work out how to address it. It’s about making a difference, inspiring change and ideally taking up something that helps make a positive impact. 

For the Church of Scientology and the Midrand South African Police Service, it was about bringing joy to the orphans and the less privileged.
