As a new-generation blood thinner, it was met with a lot of excitement upon its release to the market, however, it was not long after its release that patients began to experience potentially life-threatening side effects related to dangerous and sudden instances of uncontrollable bleeding.

Patients have used a number of studies that have been conducted on these various side effects to support their cases in court. One such study was done by two doctors of their own prompting. Judy Hun and John Hwang began to notice that many of their patients taking Xarelto began to suffer from episodes of eye bleeding, otherwise known as “spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage.”

After their own investigation, they concluded that the risk of eye bleeds could be increased in patients who had switched from using traditional blood thinners to Xarelto.

Another study conducted over the course of almost two years beginning on October 1, 2010, and concluding on March 31, 2012, evaluated the potential linkage of excessive bleeding to Xarelto. The study evaluated almost 46,000 users of blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin, Pradaxa and Xarelto. The primary conclusion was that the use of Xarelto produced much higher numbers of uncontrollable bleeding episodes than the other blood-thinning drugs included in the study.

September 27, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the status of the current Multidistrict Litigation (MDL 2592) that consolidated the more than 2,800 Xarelto lawsuits filed against the subsidiary company of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Bayer AG. The MDL is being overseen by the Honorable Judge Eldon E. Fallon in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The plaintiffs involved in all the cases in the MDL are making similar allegations against the drug’s manufacturers that the blood thinner Xarelto can induce very sudden and spontaneous internal and external uncontrollable bleeding that has resulted in many fatalities as well. Judge Fallon has set a target date of spring 2017 to commence the first 4 bellwether trials against the defendants to be selected out of a pool of 40 cases. As the MDL inches toward the beginning of the litigation process, 400 more cases were added to it just in the month of August 2015 alone.

The cases that are the focus of the MDL are not the only ones that are progressing forward as a group litigation. The Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, PA has created a mass tort program comprised of 550 cases with all of them naming Janssen and Bayer as defendants, claiming similar allegations related to uncontrollable bleeding.

Xarelto plaintiffs are somewhat encouraged in their efforts based on actions taken with Pradaxa, another new-generation blood thinner that experienced the same kind of public scrutiny that Xarelto is now receiving. Pradaxa was released on the market by Boehringer Ingelheim in 2010, and it quickly became the focus of more than 4,000 lawsuits because of thousands of adverse event reports that were filed, 750 of which were reporting fatalities. Xarelto plaintiffs are hopeful that what happened with Pradaxa will occur in their situation. On the eve of the start of the trial Pradaxa’s manufacturer agreed to a $650 million settlement in lieu of going to trial.

He goes on to say that this is where these fish will begin to school up and feed on the large schools of menhaden as they make their way down the bay and into the ocean for their winter migration, ensuring success for anyone on a Virginia Beach fishing adventure. Depending on the water temperatures this winter, many of these fish will stay in the bay and work their way back up to spawn after they have fattened up on the menhaden. But, the Captain says, before that happens there will be a great opportunity to experience the rush of winding in a big rockfish.

The company’s limit will be two per person between 20 to 28 inches, however, one of those two may be over 28 inches. The season will run from October 4th to December 31st, and fishing will be done out of Reedville to maximize run time to the fish and get them as they move down the bay.
