Drug Deaths Hit All-Time High In Pennsylvania

New Jersey, 10/13/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Pennsylvania is one of the hardest hit states when it comes to drug use. The opioid epidemic that we see all across the nation is especially rampant in this north-eastern state, and that means that more and more people are dying drug-related deaths. Despite the attempts of Pennsylvania law enforcement and public officials to reduce the epidemic, the number of drug overdose deaths in the state has risen significantly in the last years.

In fact, more than 4,600 Pennsylvania residents died of drug overdoses in 2016, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The DEA will release its report, “Analysis of Drug-Related Overdose Deaths in Pennsylvania, 2016,” by the end of June. However, they have released some key findings and they are staggering. The total number of deaths due to a drug overdose, 4,642, itself is a 37% increase over the total for 2015 and equates to over a dozen overdose fatalities each day.

Officials from the DEA have expressed concern about the state of drug abuse in Pennsylvania. Gary Tuggle, DEA special agent for the Philadelphia field division said, “The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is in the midst of an unprecedented epidemic of drug abuse and drug-related overdose deaths that impacts every corner of the state and all of its residents. The collection, analysis, and dissemination of this data contribute to a robust information sharing environment amongst the fields of law enforcement, public health, treatment, and public policy, all of whom are working together to address the drug crisis in Pennsylvania.”

Opioid drugs, prescription and illicit, were responsible for 85% of the overdose deaths in Pennsylvania. Taking over as the number one killer is fentanyl and fentanyl-containing substances, with over half of the overdose deaths being attributed to the drug. Last year’s number one, heroin, is second in the 2016 report findings with approximately 45% of drug-related deaths resulting from its use. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50-100 times stronger than morphine, and 30-50 times stronger than heroin. It is often mixed with heroin or other substances, sometimes without the users’ knowledge, often causing a fatal outcome.

Other key findings in the DEA report show that those with the highest risks of dying from an opioid-related overdose are in the 25 to 34 years old age bracket, with a 970% increase in their chances of heroin-related death. The second most at risk group is the 15 to 24 age bracket, with a 380% increase in their chances of a fentanyl-related overdose death.

The key findings that have been released provide a preview of the full DEA report that will follow in a few weeks. The full report will provide a breakdown of drug overdose deaths by county. Data that has been released shows that there is a significant increase in fentanyl use in Allegheny County, home of metropolitan Pittsburg. The drug was found in as many as two-thirds of the drug overdose fatality cases in and around Pittsburg, and in about half of the drug deaths in Philadelphia.

The data for the DEA report was gathered from district attorneys and coroners across the state, and the final report is being completed along with the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburg. It’s estimated that there were over 60,000 drug overdose deaths nationwide in 2016.

In addition to Allegheny and Philadelphia Counties, Lehigh and Northampton Counties have also seen a dramatic surge in drug overdose deaths. The 2015 DEA report showed a statewide increase in drug overdose deaths of 23% over the previous year. In Lehigh County, the 2015 overdose death rate was the 15th highest rate among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, with 32 deaths per 100,000 residents.

However, in the 2016 report, Lehigh County’s numbers were significantly higher. In fact, the drug overdose deaths for Lehigh and Northampton Counties in 2016 are nearly equal to the deaths reported for the previous two years combined.

Northampton County reported 58 drug overdose deaths involving heroin or other opiate drugs. That is an increase of one death per week in the county and just one death short of the county’s total for 2014 and 2015 combined.

In Lehigh County, there were 38 opiate-related deaths and 73 deaths that were related to a combination of substances in 2016, making the total for the year 111 deaths. That is close to the 2015 and 2014 combined total of 116 drug-related deaths in the county.

Pennsylvania Governor, Tom Wolf stated that the new data “reinforce that Pennsylvania and the federal government must fight even harder to combat the damage done to our families and communities by heroin and opioids and the disease of addiction.”

“We must continue to put resources into treatment and tools for law enforcement, health professionals and families on the front lines, while also expanding education and prevention programs and ending the stigma of addiction,” Wolf said.

The Governor has called for funding to continue for the 45 outpatient treatment programs statewide, county-level efforts, and dedicated funding for naloxone (an opioid drug overdose antidote). Governor Wolf has also discouraged reducing funding for Medicaid, which he says has assisted in substance abuse treatment across the state.

Car Color Impacts Risk Of An Accident Says Boca Car Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 10/13/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Many cyclists, motorcyclists and construction workers on the nation’s roads wear bright, lime green jackets or shirts. Why? It makes them more visible and reduces the chances a driver may not notice them and collide into them. An Australian study shows that if the color of a vehicle makes it more difficult to see the chances of an accident increases. Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne says being more or less visible may be the difference between an accident and a near miss.

Black cars are up to 47% more likely to be involved in vehicle accidents, according to researchers at Australia’s Monash University reports the Daily Mail. They looked at police data covering 850,000 accidents over twenty years which covered the cars involved, when the accidents happened and the type of accident. Commercial vehicles, taxis and white vans were excluded from the study which was published in the journal Safety Science in 2010.

White, gold and yellow vehicles were found to be the safest. Black, grey, silver, red and blue colors were found to be less safe because they don’t stand out as much against the background of the road, scenery and other traffic. Researchers tried to take into account some drivers may be more likely to take risks and prefer driving cars of a certain color.

Black cars, during the daytime, were up to 12% more likely to be involved in an accident than white vehicles. At dawn and dusk black cars had a 47% greater risk of a collision. Results suggested orange cars may be the safest, but the data wasn’t conclusive.

If everyone started buying white and orange cars their safety advantage may disappear, researchers claim. If a car owner switched from a black car, he or she might be safer but if the majority of vehicles became white and orange there would be less contrast and accidents involving them would increase. Researchers found that although vehicle color could impact crash risk, bad driver habits like speeding and drunk driving have a far greater impact.

In 2013, white was the world’s most popular car color, followed by black, silver and gray, according to reports from PPG Industries and Axalta Coating Systems, reports Edmunds. White was the most popular car color in North America since 2006 and its popularity has spread around the world. Jim Parker, head of exterior color and trim for the Chrysler Group, is quoted as saying color choice normally boils down to one of two things, “It’s either what they feel about themselves or what they think they would like to feel about themselves.” Whether or not white or orange is your style, if safety is a priority you may want to consider colors that stand out.

Philadelphia Motorcycle Accident Attorney – Handling Non-Contact Motorcycle Accidents

Philadelphia, 10/13/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Not all vehicle accidents involve more than one vehicle. Phily accident lawyer wants motorcycle drivers to understand what to do if they are in a non-contact, or one-vehicle, accident. Another driver can be held liable for a motorcyclist’s property damage and injuries when they are responsible for an accident, even if his or her vehicle did not actually come into contact with the motorcycle. The key to these types of cases is whether the other driver was negligent.

What is Negligence in a Non-Contact Motorcycle Accident?

In basic terms, negligence in auto accidents occurs when a driver doesn’t exercise reasonable care. It is based on what attorneys describe as the “reasonable person” standard. This standard is defined as what a reasonable person would have done in the same situation. If a driver does not take that action and an accident occurs, then it is considered negligence. Conversely, if a reasonable person wouldn’t have taken a specific action, then doing that action would be considered negligent.

To determine whether someone acted negligently, a jury (and insurance company) looks at all the circumstances relating to the driver’s actions.

What Are Drivers’ Responsibilities?

Typically, drivers’ responsibilities are twofold – to obey traffic laws and to be aware of what is happening around them. They must keep an eye out for other vehicles, traffic signals or other devices, pedestrians, etc. If a driver doesn’t notice or fails to see what is plainly there to be seen, and then respond reasonably, then he or she will probably be found negligent.

What is a Non-Contact Motorcycle Accident?

There are many ways that a non-contact motorcycle accident can occur. For example, imagine a car and motorcycle are driving in the same direction in separate lanes on a two-lane road, with the car a little bit ahead of the motorcycle. The car changes lanes quickly without signaling or giving other notice to the motorcycle driver. The motorcyclist then has to swerve to avoid being hit by the car, loses control, and crashes. There was no contact between the car and the motorcycle, but there was an accident that occurred due to the car driver’s negligence.

Non-Contact Motorcycle Accidents Are Like Other Vehicle Accidents

Non-contact motorcycle accidents are the same as other types of vehicle accidents. The question isn’t whether two vehicles collided, but rather that someone was driving negligently. The main thing to remember is that if the negligence of another driver causes a motorcyclist to wreck, the driver will be liable for the accident, even if his or her car never touched the motorcycle.

How The Clean Air Economy Can Help Save Your Life

Riverdale, NJ, 10/13/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The Clean Air Act was passed in 1963 and signaled a shift in how the U.S. government viewed and acted against increasing levels of air pollution. The act gave powers to the federal and state government to enact regulations that limited emissions from factories and from motor vehicles.

One of the ancillary effects of the act is that it has created a clean air economy, driven by the formation of businesses focused solely on providing Americans with products that can help lower air pollution at home, at work and even in their cars. The clean air economy has generated billions in revenue, but it has also benefited the public by helping educate them about the importance of clean air.

Benefits of the Clean Air Act

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Clean Air Act was the first federal law related to air pollution control in the U.S. The act created a federal program in the U.S. Public Health Service and gave it the power to develop new techniques to monitor and lower air pollution levels. Since then, several major amendments have expanded the power of state and local governments to create emission standards and regulate toxic pollutants. (1)

“The Clean Air Act was a milestone for the U.S. in terms of pollution control,” stated Armando Brunetti, Camfil Americas Executive Vice President. “It established protocols for analyzing air quality and creating standards to reduce pollution from emissions. Most importantly, it brought the importance of good air quality into the national conversation.”

There are many benefits of the Clean Air Act, but probably the most important one is that by requiring states to lower air pollution levels, millions of Americans were protected from premature deaths and serious illnesses related to poor air quality, such as lung cancer and heart problems.

The EPA reported that reductions in fine particulate pollution and ozone levels had, “avoided more than 160,000 premature deaths, 130,000 heart attacks, millions of cases of respiratory problems such as acute bronchitis and asthma attacks, and 86,000 hospital admissions.” (2)

The Clean Air Act also helped prevent 13 million workdays that would have been lost to absence or illness and prevented 3.2 million lost school days that would have resulted from respiratory ailments caused by poor air quality.

But another huge benefit has been the creation of the clean air economy, driven by thousands of air quality businesses that sell equipment and devices to help Americans improve the air they breathe.

The Prevalence of Indoor Air Quality Products

According to TechSci Research, the U.S. air cleaner industry is projected to grow at a nine-percent rate until 2019. Part of the reason for this steady growth is the emergence of the healthcare and hospitality industries as major buyers of these products. (3)

This isn’t really a surprise because, since the passage of the Clean Air Act, thousands of indoor air quality products have hit the market, designed in one way or another to help eliminate pollutants in the air.

Air cleaners, also known as air purifiers are probably the most common type of indoor air quality product that is sold to consumers. These devices are made to eliminate specific pollutants such as:

Particulates – includes smoke, pollen, dust, pet dander, tobacco smoke, particles created by wood-burning stoves, dust mites, mold, bacteria, and viruses.

Gas Pollutants – includes gas from stoves, vehicle exhaust emissions, tobacco smoke, pesticides, paints, and adhesives.

The majority of air cleaners sold on the market are electronic air cleaners that use an electrostatic charge to attract and trap particles. These types of cleaners are used to remove particulates but do not work well for gas pollutants. (4)

To eliminate gas pollutants, you need to invest in an air cleaner that has a gas-phase air filter, which eliminates gases and odors by absorbing them through some type of gas-moving material that will typically include activated carbon.

How to Keep Air Clean

The clean air economy shows no signs of slowing down, and that’s good news for anyone who is concerned about how to keep the air clean at home or at the workplace. We’ve seen how air cleaners can help reduce the level of pollution, but there are other methods you can implement to improve the quality of the air you breathe.

First, you should check your home or workplace for areas of excess moisture, because wetness can lead to the development of bacteria and mold spores that are harmful to your health. Second, have the lines to your gas stove inspected to ensure there are no dangerous leaks. And lastly, use high-efficiency commercial & industrial air filters to help eliminate many of the harmful pollutants. Consider air filters rated for removal of particulate matter (PM) to address the conditions in a specific environment.

Backed by over 50 years of experience and innovation, every Camfil product is designed to provide high-efficiency air filtration, low energy consumption, and a healthier environment. No matter what your needs, Camfil has a solution that is right for you.

New York City Bus Accident Lawyer – Are Buses Safe?

New York City, NY, 10/11/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

In a country as large as the United States, road trips are quite common. To get from Point A to Point B, many groups and individuals choose to travel by charter bus. Generally, charter buses are quite safe. Unfortunately, there have been several catastrophic incidents in recent years, which has caused many to question if bus travel is truly safe. Additionally, some safety experts have pushed for stricter rules when it comes to charter bus safety.

Serious Charter Bus Crashes

Most of the time, people traveling on a charter bus are headed to a fun destination. The last thing anyone should have to worry about when boarding a charter bus is being injured or even killed.

Sadly, charter bus accidents happen, and they seem to be happening with more regularity. In June 2017, a charter bus carrying high school students on a church trip from Alabama to Georgia crashed on the highway. One person was killed in the accident and at least 20 others were injured.

According to a Time report, the bus overturned during the crash and came to rest on its roof with a car trapped underneath it.

In a separate charter bus accident in Oregon in 2012, nine people were killed when a bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. An investigation showed that the driver had worked 92 hours in the week leading up to the charter bus accident.

Safety Experts Say There Are Gaps Between Bus and Airline Safety

Long-haul charter bus trips are common in the United States, but this type of mass transit isn’t subject to the same safety scrutiny as other forms of transportation. Fatal and serious bus crashes have raised alarm among safety experts, who say federal authorities should change the laws to create more oversight of the charter bus industry.

A CNN report points out that it took just one fire aboard a 787 Dreamliner airplane to prompt the FAA to ground every Dreamliner in the country until the problem was investigated. That fire caused one minor injury according to reports. At the same time, however, 17 people were killed and 80 others were injured in bus crashes along the West Coast of the United States. As CNN reports, “Those [accidents] generated a few headlines and little, if any, public outcry.”

Contact a NYC Bus Accident Lawyer

New York City bus accident lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter states, “With airline ticket prices rising every day, a growing number of people are turning to charter buses to get them where they need to go. It’s important for federal and state authorities to ensure that charter bus companies maintain the highest safety standards.”

If you’ve been injured in a new york bus accident, contact an experienced New York City bus accident lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your case.

Artist Santiago Ribeiro Finds New And Unusual Avenues To Showcase His Art

New York, NY, United States, 10/11/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

New York, United States, Oct. 05, 2017– In an attempt to take art to the people en masse – and promote the world’s largest group exhibit of surreal art — Portuguese surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro is teasing the public with flash images of his work in the most famous intersection of the world: Times Square.

Ribeiro’s vivid, colorful paintings will be shown sporadically – flashed on random days at random times  — on the Nasdaq OMX Group screen in New York City until Dec. 31, 2017. They will be up for three whole minutes on the Reuter’s screen for each appearance – ample time for tens of thousands of pedestrians to catch a glimpse.

“As always I’m doing something different and the idea to exhibit in Times Square in New York shows how the mass media are our modern means to show our art,” Ribeiro said.

The Times Square pieces are part of the International Surrealism Now group exhibit, an ongoing project that Ribeiro began in 2010 to showcase the work of surrealist artists from all over the world. He conceived the International Surrealism Now movement in Coimbra with a major exhibit organized by Bissaya Barreto.

As Ribeiro continues planning the project’s next phase, he is testing innovative exhibition spaces such as Times Square. His ambition for Winter 2018 is to launch the largest world exhibition of contemporary Surrealism art in Europe. The initial exhibit of paintings, drawings, digital art, photographs and sculpture — with more than 100 artists from 48 countries participating — is expected to be shown at several museums, monuments and public spaces throughout Portugal.

Ribeiro’s work has been featured at the U.S. embassy in Lisbon, in the Portuguese American Journal, in Digital Meets Culture, Pravda in Portuguese, Diario de Notícias de Madeira, Campeão das Províncias, República Portuguesa, Global.pt; Spain’s Pressenza; France’s Le Parisien, Bel 7 Infos and 75 Agende Cuturel; Don 411 News, Bulgaria’s Novosiane and many other publications. His sponsors include Bissaya Barreto Foundation, Condeixa a Nova House Mayor and MagicCraftsman Studio.

One of Ribeiro’s paintings is on display at Paris’ Galerie JPHT until September 23rd, alongside the work of major surrealist artists from Japan and France.

How To Fight Air Pollution In China

Riverdale, NJ, 10/09/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

China suffers from some of the worst air pollutions in the world. Two of its cities, Baoding and Xingtai, are in the top 10 for cities with the worst air pollution, according to the World Health Organization. (1) China’s smog causes a variety of health problems, and this year saw China’s Jiangsu province receive the country’s first ever red alert for smog. What are the causes of air pollution in China? It’s important to understand the causes of air pollution in China, so solutions to the problem can be devised.

Causes of air pollution in China

There are various causes of air pollution in China, but the main cause is the burning of fossil fuels, including coal. Coal burning is the biggest contributing factor to China’s smog problem, according to the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences.

“Emissions from coal burning plants in China’s most developed regions – Beijing, Hebei, and Tianjin – are five times China’s national average emissions. Much of China gets its energy from coal, and the burning of this coal produces particulate matter,” explains Kevin Wood, Camfil USA Vice President Sales & Marketing. “This particulate matter is responsible for turning the air into smog. These particles can reduce visibility, create acid rain, and damage people’s health.” (2)

The air in Beijing frequently hits 300 and above on the EPA’s air quality guide, representing the worst possible rating on the guide. The EPA recommends that for particulate pollution numbers above 200, those with heart or lung diseases should avoid all outdoor physical activity, and everyone else should stay away from heavy exertion. (3)

The problem of smog becomes even worse during the wintertime, as many rural families and urban communities use coal to keep warm during the winter. Beijing suffers from some of the worst smog, and the problem is compounded by being in a valley between the Xishan and Yanshan mountain regions. If a high-pressure system moves in, the air above the city can’t move over the nearby mountains, and just sits there becoming more polluted.

Health effects of air pollution in China

In terms of the health effects of air pollution in China, exposure to the polluted air in various Chinese cities can cause heart or lung conditions, and exacerbate symptoms in people who already have said conditions.

Particulate matter, particles which are smaller than 10 micrometers, can damage lungs and cause heart attacks. It can also kill people who have heart or lung diseases.

“Exposure to these tiny particles has been linked with lung cancer, and the World Health Organization reports that fine particulates are to blame in the 5% of deaths from lung cancer worldwide, or about 800,000 deaths annually,” says Wood. “Outdoor air pollution from coal burning and other sources causes the deaths of an estimated 1.6 million people in China every year, around 4400 people a day. Fine particles can also exacerbate asthma and cause difficulty breathing even in healthy people.’ (4)

Nanoparticles are particles which are smaller than 100 nanometers in size. Current research on the impact of nanoparticles on human health suggests they can even penetrate cell membranes and cause a range of health problems such as damage to the circulatory system and lungs.

Solutions to air pollution in China

What are some solutions to air pollution in China? Air pollution in China can be combated by reducing dependency on coal for manufacturing, energy, and heating. China has a five-year plan to reduce emissions and tighten their air pollution targets. The government will be limiting the emissions of tiny particulate matter from factories by 25%. The Chinese government will also be promoting electricity and natural gas in place of coal, and implementing control measures to deal with air pollution. China is investing in larger wind and solar power projects to cut down on emissions from coal and other fossil fuels. Coal plants are currently being shut down by the Chinese government, in favor of wind and solar power plants. (5)

“Beyond these steps, existing coal using facilities can install air scrubbers to reduce particulate emissions, residents can switch to alternatives for current coal stoves and furnaces, vehicle emission standards should be enforced, and higher-quality fuel can be used for diesel and gas vehicles,” says Wood. “Demand for continued economic growth is slowing down some of China’s anti-pollution efforts. However, if China is to clean up its air, it will have to find some way of implementing these policies despite pressure to continue rapid growth.” (6)

Most Accidents Are At Intersections Warns Boca Car Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 10/09/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

You may fear an accident on the highway because of the speed and possible harm that could happen but statistically you’re most likely to get in an accident at an intersection, whether that’s around the block from your home or across the country while you’re on vacation. If you’re going through an intersection you should be especially alert says Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne.

There were an estimated 2,307,000 vehicle accidents at intersections across the country in 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They accounted for about 40% of the 5,811,000 crashes that occurred in the United States that year. An estimated 7,421 fatalities occurred at these accidents and in 733,000 crashes one or more vehicle occupants suffered injuries.

There are many potential dangers when two roads join together where pedestrians may try to cross. Actions by other drivers are the dangers you need to be most concerned about. NHTSA looked at intersection accident causes, what they called “critical reasons.” Of the 787,236 accidents in or near intersections in 2008, about 96% had critical reasons attributed to drivers, while vehicle or environment related critical reasons were to blame for less than 3% of accidents.

When a critical reason was a driver error:

About 41% of the critical reasons were recognition errors (due to not paying attention, internal and external distractions or not seeing something).

About 34% of the accident causes were decision errors by the driver (driving aggressively or too fast), and 10% were performance errors (overcompensation, improper control).

One of those errors can be deciding to run a red light or driving too fast to stop in time to avoid going through the intersection on a red light. The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) states that in 2014, there were a total of 32,675 traffic accident related fatalities with 8,661 of them happening at intersections.

An estimated 2,675 of those intersections had traffic lights.

There were 710 fatalities caused by a vehicle going through a red light at these intersections, 44 of them were pedestrians or bicyclists.

The FHA suggests that when you approach an intersection you:

Reduce speed

Put your right foot over the brake to improve reaction time

Look across and around the intersection ahead of you so can become aware of the surroundings

Know where you want to go and which lane to use

Look left, right and left again to check for oncoming traffic before crossing an intersection

Use turn signals to show others where you’re going, and leave enough room in front of you so you won’t block the intersection if traffic stops.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a car accident at or near an intersection, contact Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. You can discuss your case, how the law may apply and your best legal options to protect your rights and obtain compensation for your injuries.
