Should You Extend The Time Between PM Service Calls?

Riverdale, NJ, 09/26/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Ask drivers how often they should change oil in their cars and you’ll likely hear an answer that’s been repeated for generations: ‘three months or every 3,000 miles, whichever comes first.’ The performance of older automobile engines and the low quality of motor oil demanded a short interval be followed to avoid expensive repairs. However, that may no longer be valid as improvements to automotive engines and advancement in oil chemistry has changed the paradigm; saving many companies significant internal or external labor hours and cost.

While car manufacturers are extending maintenance intervals up to 10,000 miles in some cases, that message has not yet reached everyone. Quick in-and-out oil change shops with guilt inducing windshield stickers, are doing their best to insure the 3,000 mile/ three-month oil change remains firmly in place, for obvious reasons.

Oil change intervals are not the only maintenance cycle under challenged due to advanced technology. Recent improvements to HVAC equipment, building automation systems and air filter technology have progressed to the point where the question should be asked: Is it also time to rethink the industry standard of quarterly PM service calls on your HVAC equipment?

Let’s look at just a few recent technical innovations on three key components of HVAC systems and how they give you flexibility when determining the optimum interval between PM calls.

1. Like most mechanical systems, HVAC equipment has benefited from the improved reliability of raw materials in the supply chain. Stress fractures from the vibration of moving parts for example, is less of an issue as the consistency of metals and other materials used for structural supports have become more reliable. Belts, which in the past required regular inspections, now routinely run a minimum of one year between adjustments.

If we look inside at the heart of HVAC systems, new variable speed compressor technology reduces wear and tear by matching the compressor’s operational speed to the demand load. This also reduces repeated startups from a dead stop which is not only hard on equipment, but requires significant energy.

If the compressor is the heart of the system, coils are the veins and arteries. Micro-channel coil technology, borrowed from the automotive industry, utilizes aluminum tubes as opposed to fins. These tubes are much sturdier with a higher resistance to corrosion. The manufacturing technique used to produce these coils has fewer critical inherent failure points which further improves reliability.

2. A maintenance office in today’s world may resemble an air traffic control tower due to the expanded use of building automation systems. It was not all that long ago, the ability to continuously monitor and adjust the performance of your HVAC equipment from a single computer terminal was limited to Fortune 500 companies with deep pockets. That is no longer the case as the widespread use of this technology has brought its benefits within nearly everyone’s budget.

These systems give the user the ability to monitor the current condition of multiple units with the same level of confidence as a visual inspection. As software continuously improves, diagnostic functions and even equipment failure predictions, will allow managers to avoid running equipment to failure between pre-scheduled maintenance calls.

3. The air filter is the final piece of the puzzle. More than the other two components, the service life of the pleated air filter has historically been the primary driver when developing a PM schedule. In the past, air filters would need replacing every three months. The lack of technical innovation to improve service life by air filter manufacturers coupled with service contractors who built their business models on four changes per year, left the industry with their version of the “3000 mile oil change.”

However, according to Camfil USA’s Food and Beverage Segment Manager, Mark Davidson; “While today’s pleated air filters may look the same as they used to, the similarity ends there. Today, you can find structurally strong, water-resistant pleated filters produced from multiple fiber densities with higher MERV ratings. It may be a surprise to learn, but 12-month service life guarantees are now available”

“Be an active participant when selecting air filters that protect your people and your products. Everyone in the supply chain doesn’t have the same motives so it’s up to the user to request test reports or modeling software projections. After purchase and installation, validate those lab reports with actual field testing to confirm performance.”

“Also, demand those service life guarantees,” says Davidson, “and take advantage of those filters capable of delivering higher performance. PM schedules can now be developed after removing the service life of the air filter from the equation. In other words, create PM schedules based solely upon the needs and performance of equipment; not because an air filter needs to be changed.”

Based on the advancement in equipment performance, building controls and air filter technology, should building managers rethink the practice of automatically scheduling quarterly PM service calls? It may be hard to say yes to that question, but remember that improvements in the auto industry challenged something as deep-seated as the 3000-mile oil change, and we are all the better for it. Overall cost to the consumer is down, performance is up and we are disposing of far less waste oil.

In the HVAC world, it seems technological improvements now allow PM schedules to be based primarily on the mechanical needs of the equipment and not because the air filters need changing. System performance is improved, overall cost down and far fewer dirty filters shipped to landfills.

CONCLUSION:

For more than 50 years, Camfil has sold value added energy and labor saving air filtration products to commercial facilities.

Camfil air filters remove not only dust, but fine particles down to the sub-micron level.

Instead of just improving the air quality, air filters can also save money through a reduction in energy costs. Without effective air filtration systems, indoor pollutants can cause a variety of health problems.

Clean air is a human right because it is essential for life.

Camfil is focused on creating a better future. Camfil air filtration products today are delivering unmatched results, in terms of both filtration and energy efficiency, but there is still much work to be done.

Video Explains – What Is Dual Diagnosis & Co-Occurring Disorders

New Jersey, 09/26/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Summit Behavioral Health’s Chief Operating Officer, Maria Ulmer MA, LMFT, CAADC, explains what dual-diagnosis is and how Summit approaches the treatment for clients who have it in a recent video on the organization’s website. Summit’s treatment facilities often see clients suffering from dual-diagnosis (also called co-occurring disorders), which occurs when a person presents with two disorders or conditions at the same time.

Ulmer says that having a dual-diagnosis can make treatment complicated. “In our atmosphere, we are looking at addiction or substance abuse disorders in addition to a mental health disorder. Often this might be depression and anxiety paired up with alcohol use. And when the two come together, it creates a complication, where we now have a layering of symptoms.” She goes on to explain the importance of determining which disorder came first and where the symptoms originated, in order to be able to appropriately address the two disorders simultaneously.

Clients who have a dual-diagnosis may have developed an addiction to drugs or alcohol as a result of an underlying mental health condition. Conversely, they may have first started abusing drugs or alcohol not knowing that “some of the side effects are mental health-like symptoms.,” Ulmer explained. Whether the addiction came before the mental health issue or the reverse, it is essential to understand which is the client’s primary diagnosis in order to provide the proper treatment and after-care for long-term recovery.

Understanding dual-diagnosis and tailoring each client’s treatment to his or her specific set of circumstances is what Summit believes is the key to positive outcomes in rehabilitative treatment. Using a combination of cognitive behavioral and emotion-based therapy, traditional 12-step programs, and relapse prevention techniques, Summit aims to meet their clients where they are, and provide the highest level of treatment.

Summit Behavioral Health offers detox, residential, and outpatient options in three states with six locations. The organization has become one of the country’s must-watch health networks for alcohol, drug, eating disorder, and dual-diagnosis treatment.

Summit utilizes an individual approach to treatment, knowing that each client is unique, to compassionately guide them through the challenging first days of sobriety through after-care and to long-lasting recovery.

Located in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, Summit accepts men and women who are seeking help for drug and alcohol addiction and dual-diagnosis disorders.

Globys Payments Automates Invoice-To-Cash With Straight-Through Processing

Seattle, WA, 09/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Globys, the leading innovator in invoice-to-cash solutions, announced today a new release of Globys Payments. Globys Payments adds simplified multi-pay, intelligent remittance automation, and expanded payment gateway support. The new features allow a customer to digitally pay multiple invoices with one payment while automating capture of remittance advice so that it is accurately and automatically applied to each invoice within the accounts receivables of the supplier.

In the B2B invoice-to-cash process, payments and remittance advice from a customer are almost always submitted through different channels. Consequently, an accounts receivable department is left with the challenge of reconciling payments to invoices in order to recognize revenue and close books. This B2B reconciliation is compounded with complexity because of the myriad of billing accounts and invoices corporate customers have. The result is a highly manual and error-prone process that can slow throttle accounting operations.

Straight-through processing provides a single channel to both submit payment and remittance advice electronically. Straight-through processing removes operational costs and errors of a fragmented, manual payment workflow by linking payment information and remittance advice together. Straight-through processing replaces the cumbersome multi-step email and document process for B2B customers with an easy-to-use, integrated online experience to help drive adoption of electronic payments.

In fact, a recent Globys survey found that all respondents identified a lack of extensive remittance information and unwillingness for business customers to transact online as top barriers for growth of electronic payments.  Another industry survey showed that less than 10% of invoices are processed straight-through.

The new Globys Payments address the challenge of enabling straight-through processing. The latest release of Globys Payments includes:

–        Simplified multi-pay: Drives adoptions of electronic payments by letting B2B customers easily organize and consolidate invoices and then pay with a single click while automatically submit remittance advice for each invoice

–        Intelligent remittance automation: Removes the guess-work and manual steps of reconciliation by automatically applying remittance advice according to customer specification to invoices within account receivables

–        Expanded payment gateway support: Accelerates deployment with standardized integrations for a growing number of payment gateways

“Research of our own client base shows that large corporates are receiving hundreds of invoices a month from a single supplier, with the average large corporate receiving 70. But they’re not making 70 payments, they are averaging less than 5 payments,” said Matthew Shanahan. “Using traditional reconciliation methods takes hours per customer, but using straight-through processing virtually eliminates the manual intervention that is common place today. Customers get a more convenient payment experience, and suppliers get cheaper, faster, error-free reconciliation. It’s a win-win.”

Globys Payments is available now and can be configured to deliver segment specific payment experiences for small business, mid-market and enterprise business customers.

For more information on Globys B2B Payments, join our webinar event on Thursday, September 28th at 11 am PT or visit https://www.globys.com/products/globys-payments.

The Most Dangerous Highways Are In FL Says Boca Car Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 09/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

You may drive on at least one of them frequently and according to the Auto Insurance Center, sponsored by a group of insurance companies, they are the most dangerous in the country: I-95 and I-10. I-95’s southern end starts in Miami and ends on the Canadian border in Maine while I-10 starts in Jacksonville and goes all the way to Santa Monica, California. They stretch across the country, says Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne, but locally they can be very dangerous.

The Auto Insurance Center (AIC) looked at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics and found that in 2014 I-10 was the scene of 278 deaths and I-95 was where 204 people died.

Florida’s 382-mile stretch of I-95 was the most dangerous road in the country, with the worst rate of fatal accidents, from 2004 to 2008 according to NHTSA reports the Sun Sentinel. Aggressive and distracted drivers along with heavy traffic congestion may have been to blame.

One of the problems with I-10 is that there are long stretches without barriers between those going in opposite directions. If a driver loses control of a vehicle and heads toward those coming the other way there’s nothing to prevent it.

Florida is not listed as one of the most dangerous or safest five states when it comes to fatal traffic accidents. Wyoming is listed as the worst with 25.7 traffic deaths per 100,000 population and New Jersey is the best at 6.2.

The AIC also has a number of other facts:

Motor vehicle crashes killed 32,675 people in the U.S. in 2014, which averages out to a fatality about every 16 minutes.

Driving while impaired by alcohol was a factor in at least 31% of the fatal crashes. The most frequent blood alcohol level was .22%, about 2.5 times higher than the legal limit in most states. Young drivers have the highest risk of being involved in an alcohol related fatality. For those people involved in fatal accidents in 2014, 30% of drivers with blood alcohol content levels of 0.08% or above were 21 to 24 years old.

More than 1,900 (or 6%) of traffic deaths involved drug use. When lab tests were done on drivers killed in accidents marijuana was present in 900 fatal vehicle crashes, almost half of the total. Other drugs found included cocaine (a factor in 241 fatalities), amphetamines (224 fatalities) and methamphetamine (212 fatalities).

Based on five years’ worth of data the most dangerous days of the year to drive are July 4, January 1, September 18, August 4 and August 27. Traffic accident deaths on those days are about five times the average.

The most dangerous time of day to drive is during the afternoon rush hour, between 5:00 and 6:00. Despite this, the most dangerous day of the week happens when most of us don’t work, Saturday, with 5,317 deaths, followed by Friday with 4,658.

July and August are the most dangerous months each with more than 2,700 deaths. The month with the least fatalities is February with 1,917.

If you or a loved one have been injured or killed in a car accident on Florida’s highway system, contact Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. What Coal-Burning Plants Are Doing To The Environment

Riverdale, NJ, 09/29/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Throughout the world, coal-burning power plants are generating the energy required by millions of residences and commercial facilities. But these coal-burning plants are not just providing energy, they are also triggering the release of harmful particulates that are worsening air quality.

In fact, burning coal caused nearly 400,000 premature deaths in China in 2013, according to the New York Times. Coal burning generates 40 percent of the country’s harmful pollutants known as particulate matter (PM), contaminants that include solid and liquid airborne particles. (1)

There are three critical ranges of PM – PM10, MP2.5 and PM1. The latter, PM1 and PM2.5 are the most dangerous to human health because they are very small, smaller that the eye can see, which makes it easy for people to inhale or swallow these contaminants. Once PM enters the body, it can harm the lungs and respiratory passages, and studies have found that long-term exposure to PM1 and PM2.5 can cause decreased lung function, lung cancer and heart disease.

Coal-burning is especially dangerous in China because the country uses as much coal annually as all other countries combined, and coal burning in the country is the biggest source of both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, the leading cause of climate change.

So why is coal such a major contributor to pollution not just in China but also throughout the world, and what steps are countries taking to reduce the amount of coal burned by power plants?

How Coal Power Causes Pollution

Coal is a combustible black fossil fuel that is made of carbonized plant matter found in deep underground reservoirs. It is a primary source of fuel in many countries, especially developing countries, because it is cheap and plentiful.

But as mentioned earlier, there are consequences to using this fossil fuel, which become clearer as you begin to understand how coal power causes pollution.

When coal is burned, it releases carbon dioxide (CO2), which scientists have found helps trap heat and is a primary cause of global warming. But long-term exposure to CO2  is also harmful to human health, because it can lead to dizziness, difficulty breathing, headache and an inability to make logical decisions.

At higher concentrations, CO2 can cause you to become unconscious, and if medical treatment is not available, it can lead to death.

And according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the average coal-burning plant in the U.S. creates 3.5 million tons of CO2 each year, making the U.S. and China the countries with the largest total coal emissions in the world. (2)

What makes coal burning even more dangerous to human health is that it also generates sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, mercury and lead.

Coal burning plants are the biggest generators of sulfur dioxide in the U.S., and sulfur dioxide has been linked with lung disease due to microscopic, acidic particulates that enter the lungs.

Nitrogen oxide has been linked with the creation of ground level ozone that contributes to lung tissue damage, worsens asthma conditions and increases the risk of people developing respiratory illnesses.

Numerous studies have identified PM as a contributor to illnesses such as bronchitis, lung disease, and heart disease. In fact, people in countries where PM is at a high level often experience higher incidences of premature deaths. And to put things into perspective, the average coal-burning plant emits 500 tons of PM into the environment each year.

How to Reduce Coal Pollution

Countries are beginning to find answers to the challenge of how to reduce coal pollution.

In the U.S. for example, CO2 emissions from all power plants decreased 21 percent from 2005 to 2015, driven in large part by the country’s adoption of the Clean Power Plan. (3)

Part of this decrease in emissions has been achieved by a gradual shift from coal-burning plants to plants that generate electricity through natural gas.

China is following the U.S.’s lead and is investing in other sources of clean energy, while also implementing stricter emission standards for coal-burning plants.

“Coal is an inexpensive way for developing countries to generate the power necessary to meet increasing energy demands,” Kevin Wood, Camfil USA Vice President Sales & Marketing. “But the consequence of coal-fired power plants as well as coal used for household cooking is that it creates toxic pollutants. Countries are beginning to implement clean-energy solutions to lower outdoor coal pollution. They are also implementing public education strategies to help their citizens begin the shift from coal-based cooking to electrical and gas-based cooking.”

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

As countries around the world grapple with how to handle pollution generated by coal-burning plants, government officials continue to urge the public to join in the fight.

You can reduce your carbon footprint by joining a carpool to work several times a week, or if feasible, walking or taking public transportation to your job. You can also invest in Energy Star appliances that save energy while also lowering carbon emissions.

Can You Get Arrested For Laughing At The Police?

Dallas, Texas, 09/25/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Most people know what’s legal and which types of behavior will get you arrested. If you rob a bank, for example, you’re going to get charged with theft. If you punch someone in a bar, you can count on being taken into custody for assault.

However, some allegedly criminal behavior exists in a gray area. In some cases, whether a person’s conduct constitutes a crime comes down to their word against the word of the police officers involved.

Police officers have a tough job. They’re supposed to protect the public, enforce laws, and promote safety. But they don’t have unlimited authority to govern people’s conduct.

Interfering with an arrest is one thing. If an individual tries to stop the police from doing their job, the police have the authority to make an arrest. However, is laughing at the police a crime? Is taunting police officers a criminal offense? A recent case is asking that question.

Former NFL Player Arrested for “Taunting” the Police

In the NFL and other professional sports, players can get fined for taunting the opposing teams, fans, or officials. But what happens when they do it off the field?

In a recent case, one former NFL player is facing charges for allegedly taunting the police during a friend’s DUI arrest.

According to Bleacher Report, former football player Louis Delmas was arrested in Miami for “yelling at an officer while he conducted a field sobriety test on Delmas’ friend.”

The official name of the charge levied against Delmas is “resisting arrest without violence.” He was released on $500 bond.

Tips for Interacting with the Police

In most cases, the police aren’t going to arrest someone for laughing at them. However, if you put yourself between the police and a fleeing suspect, or you are a distraction that prevents officers from fully concentrating on carrying out their job, you could be arrested.

It’s quite possible that Delmas was simply concerned for his friend, or that he felt the police were wrong to stop his friend. However, a better course of action would have been to stay calm and seek legal counsel as soon as possible.

Let Police Do Their Job. Keep in mind that the police are responsible for their safety and yours. If you are distracting to the point that they feel you’re a threat to their safety, a suspect’s safety, or your own safety, they have the authority to take you into custody.

Cooperate, then Call Your Lawyer. If you disagree with what the police are doing, it’s best to be cooperative and to follow their instructions. As soon as you have the opportunity, contact an experienced Texas criminal defense lawyer. It’s much easier to defend yourself if you’re not facing charges for resisting arrest, assaulting police officers, or other charges the police may tack on.

Teen Addiction – Are Your Kids Addicted To Screens?

New Jersey, 09/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

These days, you can’t go anywhere without seeing people looking down at their smartphones. And any home that has kids has video game consoles, laptops, and tablets – screens are everywhere, and our children, who have grown up with them, are becoming more and more dependent on them in their daily lives.

It used to be that kids would go outside and play, ride their bikes, and interact with other kids. Families would have game nights that consisted of board games and real conversations. Unfortunately, those activities seem to be a thing of the past. Kids and adults alike are turning to screens and away from human interaction. It’s easy to start playing video games, using social media, or binge-watch television shows, and spend much more time doing so than you originally intended. And it often becomes more appealing to play or watch than to go do some other activity. There is far less physical interaction with other people, and it’s affecting relationships.

Teens and tweens are especially susceptible to the pull that addiction to screens has, and it’s more than just a behavioral habit. In his recent article in the New York Post, Dr. Richard Kardaras refers to screens as a “digital drug”, “electronic cocaine”, and “digital heroin”. These are scary terms, but they are supported by research that indicates that brains can become dependent on and addicted to using screens. Using them affects dopamine (the pleasure-inducing neurotransmitter) levels in the brain, just as drug use does.

Research on the effects of playing video games is finding that the activity affects the pre-frontal cortex of the brain in precisely the same manner that cocaine use does. This area of the brain controls major functioning including attention, impulse control, motivation, organizing, planning, and the regulation of mood. It is also the area of the brain that is associated with the symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including an inability to focus and impulsivity.

These are truly frightening findings. The fact that the use of screens can affect our children’s brains in the same way that cocaine does is cause for alarm. In addition to video games, watching television – especially binge-watching, which has become the norm, results in brain changes that mimic the same changes that addiction causes, which results in the viewer watching more and more.

In addition to the addiction issue, research shows that the overuse of screens can increase anxiety, depression, poor concentration, and even aggression in our kids. They also show that there can be significant changes in cognitive functioning and brain structure. Even those games and television shows that are considered educational can be addictive and can affect the brains of our children negatively.

How can you determine if your child is addicted to screens? You can take a look at the following list of behaviors to help you make a determination. If you are seeing more than a couple of the behaviors, then your children may be experiencing some degree of addiction to screens.

They are using screens every day for hours.
They prefer to use screens more than they want to participate in other age-appropriate activities.
They become angry or resistant to turning off screens when they are asked to.
They say they will stop, but then don’t.
They use screens when they should be sleeping.
They neglect other things like homework, chores, and friends to spend more time on screens.
They struggle with attention when not using screens.
They are uninterested and unmotivated when they are not using them.
They lose interest in things that they used to find enjoyable.
They experience depression or increased anxiety as their use of screens has increased.
They have difficulty staying present in reality.

Now that you understand the signs of screen addiction, you need to understand how to prevent or reduce it. The following are some steps you can take to help your children break their screen addiction.

Prevent it from happening in the first place. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that children under 2 years of age not be exposed to any electronic media, children 2 to 5 years of age be limited to one hour of high-quality media a day and that parents watch or play with them, and that children over 6 years old have reasonable limits placed on their screen-time and that they are encouraged to participate in other, non-screen activities. The AAP also suggests that children get adequate sleep, have planned screen-free time with family, and get some physical activity each day.
Discuss your concerns, but give your kids a voice. Having a discussion about the effects of too much screen-time is important. Let your kids know about the physical and psychological aspects of digital addiction in an age appropriate manner. Tell them what happens when the brain becomes addicted to something. Engage them in the conversation by asking what they think they can do to prevent or reduce their dependence on screens. Pulling them into the conversation and encouraging them to come up with solutions will empower them and make them more likely to follow your plans.
Limit screen-time. Setting limits and enforcing boundaries is part of our job as parents. Dealing with screen-time is not exempt from this. Set reasonable limits on just how much screen-time is allowed and be consistent in enforcing it. Make sure that they complete important tasks like homework and chores before they engage with screens.
Prohibit screen-time. If your kids are already in the throes of screen addiction, you may have to prohibit their usage for a period of time. Just like the drug addict must maintain abstinence to recover, the screen-addict may have to as well. The difference is that screen-addicts don’t have to abstain forever. As their addiction eases, you can begin allowing them to use screens with consistent limitations.
Encourage social interaction. This may mean setting up play dates for younger children or actively encouraging your older children to spend time with friends doing things that don’t require screens. Make teens feel comfortable about asking friends over for dinner and encourage them to participate in conversations.
Set a good example. You are the role model for your children, so they notice your own screen usage. If your smartphone or tablet is never out of your reach, you can’t really expect them to think that there is anything wrong with their own usage. Limiting your use of screens will help your kids limit theirs.

Camfil Announces Support Of New ISO 16890 Standard For Air Filtration

Riverdale, NJ, 09/28/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Camfil is pleased to announce its support of a new ISO 16890 standard that is an alternative to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 52:2 standard that has been used in the U.S., and EN779 that was used in Europe and other parts of the world. ISO 16890 creates a global standard that brings harmony and unity to the way air filter efficiency is measured.

Test Drive: Camfil Air Filters – Quick Cost Comparison

“We welcome the new ISO standard, because of its worldwide application to air filtration efficiency,” stated Kevin Wood, Camfil USA Vice President Sales & Marketing. “To this point, there has not been a global standard that eliminates confusion between countries as to which of the standards in use are superior. This was a decision that was made with the cooperation of all countries involved, which shows the need for a standard that all stakeholders could agree was necessary given the challenges we face fighting pollution across the globe.”

The ISO 16890 standard – which took effect on December 1, 2016 – creates new guidelines for air filter efficiency with values that replace the old ASHRAE standards’ Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). In the past, ASHRAE 52.2 and EN779 were a cause of confusion among air filter consumers as they were unsure how to compare efficiency rates in countries that did not use the same standards.

“This new standard clears the field for both air filter consumers and air filter manufacturers,” added Wood. “With ISO 16890, comparisons are now useful, because every filter is subject to the same standards. Therefore, consumers can compare air filtration products and devices on an equal basis, and decide what works best for their needs. In the long run, this will also benefit consumers because it will drive out some of the lower-quality products from the market.”

The ISO 16890 Standard also rates the ability of air filters to trap ultrafine particles, referred to as PM1, that are one micron or less in diameter. Furthermore, air filters are now tested for efficiency when they are new, and also after their electrostatic charge has faded or been removed. This secondary testing is important because studies have found that electrostatic charges artificially enhance air filter performance during lab testing. The requirement of a second test now provides a true analysis of an air filter’s capability to trap hazardous particles.

Drug Addiction Expert Breaks Down The Up-tick In Adolescent Overdoses

New Jersey, 09/22/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

When it comes to acknowledging the Opioid Epidemic, the US has been faced with some harsh realities over the past several months. Most notable of all is a recent report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) which cites findings that the leading cause of death for Americans under 50 years of age is now Accidental Death by Drug Overdose. The 2016 count of lives lost exceeds 64,000 and is a 19% increase from the previous year’s 52,000. These figures are heartbreaking.

Can Drug Companies Be Held Accountable for the Opioid Crisis?

Perhaps a more important statistic to notice is that overdose deaths for adolescents (the 12-17 year old demographic) are up as well: A striking similarity, 19% increase in the past year. This information is significant. Not just in the alarm that this news creates, but it also begs a different approach in how to address the problem.

Several governmental actions have been taken to curb the effects of this devastating crisis. Many states have adopted Good Samaritan Laws, which encourage bystanders to call law enforcement for help, if there is concern for a potential overdose, without fear of prosecution for being involved in illicit activities themselves; federal regulations hold heavy sanctions on misguided prescribers who may be buffering their revenues by pumping out scripts for prescription opioids; the release of the overdose-reversing drug Narcan and subsequent funding for free community trainings, with ease of access through your physician or local pharmacy…These efforts are worth mention and are certainly needed, however, do not address the full picture.

Where is the haste toward prevention?

In my 13 years working in the mental health and addictions counseling field, I can list over a dozen adolescent treatment programs (that I was personally acquainted with) that have closed simply due to lack of census. Services were being offered, but few were using them. Some of these programs, responding to an increase of young adults (18-26-year-olds) in need of treatment, converted their juvenile programs to fit the business’s needs, says Paul Lavella Director, of Alumni Services with Summit Behavioral Health

Alongside the trend for more young adults seeking treatment, service providers continued to see further declines in adolescents accessing services. In essence, what we are seeing is a decrease of identification in teens and an increase as they transition into adulthood. There’s something horribly wrong with this picture. As a culture, we are being reactive to a crisis as opposed to placing efforts to be proactive. This, unfortunately, is a making of the tragedy we see on the news each and every day.

Yes, prevention does exist, however it is fragmented at best. Most common prevention efforts take place in the school setting. One of the most frequently used school-based prevention programs has been empirically suggested to be ineffective, and yet the program gets renewed year after year in some states. Some states’ education departments require that school boards employ a specialist to handle substance use and other crises in their students, however, these professionals often occupy several roles within the district and their time is often stretched too thin. Programming targeting parents to provide information on current trends and concerns regarding substance use are lightly attended. I’ve facilitated many of these workshops myself; in a student population of 1200, if you can get 20 parents to attend, you’re in luck!

One thing is blatantly clear: when we are not appropriately addressing substance use and addiction in adolescence, we are inundated with young adults literally fighting for their lives shortly thereafter.

“It’s not that the approach we are taking to the Opioid Crisis is wrong, rather that it is incomplete. We need to start the conversation about drug use and addiction at an early age. And no, Just Say No is not an acceptable means of prevention. Just Say No is something that we feel more comfortable doing. We can just check it off the list, say that we ‘had the conversation,’ and be done with it. In order to create change, we have to be okay with getting uncomfortable. This is how we’re going to save these kids lives,” says Paul Lavella Director, of Alumni Services with Summit Behavioral Health

Talk to your families about substance use. If you have a family history of addiction, all the more reason to – your children may have a predisposition. Go to prevention programs offered in your community. Most, if not all, are free. Bring your kids with you. Talk about the program on the drive home. Have family dinners once in awhile. Bring up any pop-culture or media references to overdose deaths and listen to their reactions. Reach out and call the school your child attends to find out how they address prevention. Acquaint yourself with the personnel who coordinates it. Introduce your child too. Research other agencies in your community and participate or volunteer in their events from time to time.

There are limitless ways that we can make small impacts in our families and our communities. Stigma usually holds us back. Stigma also adds to this crisis. However, if we are more active in our prevention efforts, not only will we see a reduction in adolescent overdoses, over time we will not have an opioid epidemic on our hands.

The Link Between Childhood Brain Injury And Adult Depression

New York City, NY, 09/29/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Researchers have found that children who sustain brain injuries are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and related disorders as adults.

Brain injuries are always difficult to cope with, but brain injuries in kids are especially devastating. For kids and parents alike, dealing with a childhood brain injury is stressful, costly, and emotionally challenging.

Study Links Brain Injury in Kids to Anxiety and Depression as Adults

The study was conducted by researchers at Monash University School of Psychological Sciences in Melbourne, Australia. Researchers found that children with serious brain injuries had a higher likelihood of experiencing long-term psychological disorders, such as anxiety, phobias, and depression.

Compared to children who had not suffered any kind of brain injury, children who had experienced a brain injury were five times as likely to have an anxiety disorder in adulthood. Individuals who had suffered a brain injury as a child were four times as likely to have panic attacks, depression, and phobias as those who had never suffered a brain injury. People who had suffered a moderate-to-severe brain injury exhibited the highest rates of anxiety disorders and had a higher chance of suffering multiple anxiety disorders.

Concussions on the Rise Among Kids

Whether a child plays sports, is involved in a car accident, or sustains a brain injury in another type of accident, brain injuries are always a serious matter. In recent years, healthcare professionals have learned that even a so-called “mild” concussion can be dangerous in children. Even a single mild concussion can make a child or adolescent more vulnerable to subsequent brain injuries.

As many as 2 million children suffer a concussion every year. Researchers also say that up to 1.2 million childhood concussions go unreported every year, either because parents don’t realize their child has suffered a concussion, or because doctors fail to diagnose concussion.

Signs of concussion in children and adolescents include:

Headaches
Fatigue, drowsiness
Insomnia
Lack of energy
Blurred or double vision
Sensitivity to noise or light
Dizziness, lightheadedness
Nausea
Trouble concentrating
Sudden poor performance in school
Irritability, overly emotional, other personality changes
Memory problems, forgetfulness

Any time a parent suspects their child has suffered any kind of brain injury, including concussion, it’s important to see a doctor as quickly as possible.

Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer for Brain Injuries in Kids
