IV Drug Use And The Risk Of Sepsis

New Jersey, 08/16/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Drug abuse of any kind has risks, but some methods that abusers use to take drugs are more dangerous than others. Intravenous, or IV, drug use is the act of injecting drugs into your body. It is one of the most dangerous and invasive ways that drugs are taken. Using drugs in this way can lead to some serious medical conditions like Hepatitis C and the HIV virus, and continued use and repeated trauma to injections sites can lead to sepsis.

Read our previous blog on: What Are The Top 10 Most Addictive Illegal Drugs?

What is Sepsis?

Contrary to most people’s understanding, sepsis is not an infection in itself. It is actually a complication that results from an existing infection. Sepsis occurs when the body releases chemicals into the bloodstream in an attempt to fight the infection that instead triggers an inflammatory response. Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections can all result in sepsis, however, bacterial infections are the most common precursors to the condition. Sepsis is also called blood poisoning because the bacteria or toxins that are produced invade the bloodstream.

Stages of Sepsis

Sepsis is typically categorized into three stages that have the following symptoms:

Sepsis

Sepsis is diagnosed when doctors have verification or reasonable suspicion that an infection exists and two of the following symptoms are present:

Fever below 96.8 F or above 101 F

Heart rate over 90 beats per minute

Respiratory rate over 20 breaths per minute

Severe Sepsis

In severe sepsis, at least one additional symptom from the following must be present:

Heart not working properly

Struggling with breathing

Abdominal pain

Falling platelet count

Altered mental states

Drastic drop in urine production

Any one of the above symptoms may be an indicator that organs are failing.

Septic Shock

Septic shock occurs when the patient’s condition continues to deteriorate. They will exhibit the above symptoms and also low blood pressure that remains low even with attempts to raise it using fluid replacement.

As sepsis progresses, it becomes increasingly dangerous for patients. Treatment must be started as early as possible for the best outcome.

IV Drug Use and Sepsis

Using drugs intravenously can introduce a number of pathogens and toxins into your veins and body, which makes you susceptible to infection. Pathogens are disease causing microorganisms that include viruses, fungi, and bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, as it’s most commonly known) is the most common bacteria to cause infections in IV drug users.

Pathogens are commonly transmitted due to the improper or unhygienic handling of needles. When a person becomes addicted to a substance, his or her need to use becomes so strong that there is little or no thought given to his or her health. The use of dirty or shared needles at this point is common and increases the risks of infection.

Even if you do not share needles, IV drug use is still risky. Many IV drug abusers will use the same needle repeatedly to inject the drug. This is dangerous because bacteria can grow on the needle and then be transmitted to your bloodstream and body tissue. That does not mean that using new needles every time will eliminate the risk of infection. If the injection site is not properly cleaned, you can still be at risk of infection.

Types of IV-Related Infections that Cause Sepsis

There are a variety of infections that IV drug abuse can cause – some of which can be fatal. One of the biggest reasons that these infections are life-threatening is because they cause sepsis.

Some of the infections that can lead to sepsis are:

Endocarditis – This is an infection of the inner-lining of the heart caused by bacteria, fungus, or viruses.

Cellulitis – This is an infection of the skin and underlying tissue that spreads out across the limb.

Necrotizing fasciitis – This infection is commonly called a flesh-eating disease that causes the body’s soft tissue to die and is very aggressive.

While it is true that prolonged or repeated use makes the risk of infection and sepsis more likely, if you use IV drugs, even sporadically, you are exposing yourself to dangerous possibilities; it is possible to contract an infection from even one use.

Complications Related to Sepsis

Because sepsis poisons your body and blood, the longer time that goes by without treatment, the greater the risk of complications, and death. It can become so detrimental that your organs begin to struggle to function properly and may fail. Sepsis, along with the original infection itself, can increase the risk of death even further.

Even when a person recovers from sepsis, there can be long-term effects including:

Chronic fatigue

Chronic pain

Limb amputations

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Reduced functioning of internal organs

Sepsis Treatments

It’s crucial that if you believe you have an infection or that you are developing sepsis, that you seek medical attention immediately. It progresses quickly and your life may be in danger. When you seek treatment, it’s likely that you will be administered a broad-spectrum antibiotic first. This is to address the infection and the bacteria that caused it. Once testing is done, your medication may be changed to treat a more specific bacterium.

Other treatments for sepsis may include:

IV fluids

Oxygen

Corticosteroids

Insulin

Pain medication

Sedatives

Vasodepressor to raise blood pressure

If your sepsis is in advanced stages, you may require:

Intubation for breathing support

Kidney dialysis

Surgery

While sepsis can be treated and you can get better, it’s important that you also consider treating your IV drug addiction by entering drug rehab treatment. Rehab through Summit will include therapy, addiction education, relapse prevention, life and coping skills, and psychiatric care (if needed). It will give you the tools you need to stop using IV drugs and to stop putting yourself at risk of developing life-threatening infections and sepsis.

Xanax Use Endangers Motorists Warns Boca Car Accident Lawyer Joe Osborne

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 08/13/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Do you think a prescription drug can’t harm you? If so you should think again. One common prescription drug that can lead to addiction is Xanax (or alprazolam), which by itself, or in combination with other drugs and/or alcohol, can impair a driver’s abilities to the point where he or she is too dangerous to safely drive. Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne represents those injured by drivers impaired by Xanax and other drugs.

Xanax is a central nervous system depressant, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which states these types of drugs are normally prescribed for anxiety, acute stress reactions, and panic attacks. Xanax is considered one of the more sedating drugs of the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It’s often prescribed for short-term treatment of sleep problems. Benzodiazepines are not normally prescribed for long term use because patients run a high risk of developing dependence or addiction.

Side effects of the drug can include drowsiness, dizziness, mental or mood changes (such as hallucinations and suicidal thoughts), slurred speech or difficulty talking, loss of coordination, trouble walking and memory problems, reports WebMD.

It’s not clear how common drugged driving has become because unlike alcohol use, there’s no simple, accurate, quick test to determine the level of drugs in a driver’s system. The state highway patrol and the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s office arrest records don’t separate drivers accused of being impaired by alcohol and drugs, they’re both considered driving under the influence (DUI), according to the Sun Sentinel.

Florida keeps statistics on accidents where drugs are believed to play a role. They were suspected in almost two thousand accidents across Florida in 2015 but drug use was confirmed in only 557 cases. That year there were 16,400 crashes where alcohol use was suspected with 5,522 cases where that use was confirmed.

In 2014, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 21% of the 32,166 fatal vehicle accidents in the country involved a driver who tested positive for at least one drug. That’s a sharp increase from the 12% of the 39,252 fatal accidents in 2004.

At least one driver involved in a fatal, Florida accident claims it wasn’t so much the Xanax use that impaired her driving, it was the withdrawal symptoms she was suffering while trying to stop taking it, reports the Miami Herald. April Thomason faces a murder charge after a 2015 vehicle accident killed a pedestrian in Key West. In May Thomason plead that she was innocent on the grounds of insanity caused by the use of and withdrawal from Benadryl and Xanax.

She claims she was suffering from Severe Anxiolytic Withdrawal Syndrome at the time which caused her to be psychotic and delusional and unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions, including running over the victim. Thomason told police she had been awake for five days and was taking Benadryl and Xanax but trying to stop taking the Xanax.

While alcohol impaired drivers are more common, those impaired by drugs, both legal and illegal, are no less dangerous. If you or a loved one have been injured in a car accident caused by a driver impaired by drug use, contact Boca car accident lawyer Joe Osborne at (561) 800-4011 or fill out this online contact form. You can discuss your case, how the law may apply and your best legal options to protect your rights and obtain compensation for your injuries.

Why Clean Air Ducts Could Make You Breathe Easier

Riverdale, NJ, 08/16/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in a home or workplace not only delivers the air that helps regulate the temperature and humidity, but it can also determine the quality of the air that you are breathing. That’s because the outdoor air that is drawn through the HVAC system, and recirculated are filled with dust, dirt and other particles that compromise the quality of your environment.

That’s why clean air ducts are so vital to keeping your HVAC system operating at peak efficiency, but unfortunately, a lot of people just don’t understand how dirty ducts can affect their long-term health, or even how to go about having their ducts inspected.

Is Your AC Making You Sick?

If you or someone in your family has persistent allergies or respiratory problems that don’t seem to have an identifiable trigger, you may want to ask this question: Is your air-conditioning system making you sick?

To understand how this could be possible, it’s worth understanding the basics of how ducts work in an HVAC system.

According to HVAC for Beginners, a duct system provides a controlled path for airflow throughout the home. The system can be made out of sheet, metal, fiberglass ductboard, insulated plastic, or cloth.” (1)

Ducts are simply an air distribution system to circulate cool and warm air through a home or commercial facility.

A duct system has a supply side that distributes conditioned air through the vents in each room, and a return side that sucks air back into the air handler of the HVAC system so that it can be conditioned again and circulated back through the supply side. Ducts are typically rectangular or circular.

The problem is that all that circulating air draws in pollutants such as dust, pet hair, bacteria, dust mites, and pollen, which can become trapped in the ductwork, including the vents, motors and coils.

Once trapped in the ducts, these pollutants are expelled through the vents, filling a home or workplace with harmful pollutants. And the bigger problem is that dirty ducts can go unnoticed for years, which just increases the level of airborne contaminants.

And these contaminants can worsen asthma symptoms, and make allergies worse if they are not eliminated. That’s why clean air ducts are so important.

Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning

But since ducts are out of sight and hard for a non-professional to inspect, what are some of the signs your air ducts need cleaning?

According to Angie’s List, one sure sign that your ducts are dirty is the visible buildup of dust, pet hair and dust on the outside of your air vents. (2)

Another sign your ducts need cleaning is if dust blows through the vents when the air conditioning comes on. That means the debris from the ducts is forcing its way through the vents, which is not a good thing because all of those pollutants are now circulating in your home.

You can also check the condition of your air filters to see if they are extremely dirty, which could mean that they are working much harder to trap dirt from the duct system. Furthermore, you can also check to see if there is reduced airflow from your vents, which is a sign that not enough air is blowing through the ducts because of dirt blocking the air filters or otherwise restricting airflow.

Choosing an Air Duct Cleaner

When choosing an air duct cleaner, one of the most important considerations is to select a company that is a member of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA).

This association requires all members to have a certified Air System Cleaning Specialist on staff that has passed the NADCA certification exam. (3)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also suggests that you don’t hire any company that claims to be endorsed by the EPA, as the agency does not certify air duct cleaners. In addition, the EPA strongly recommends that you check the references of all prospective air duct-cleaning companies and that you obtain a written agreement that details the total cost and exact process of the cleaning before signing the contract. (4)

Benefits of Air Duct Cleaning

Clean air ducts can provide your home with multiple benefits. First, it ensures that any residual moisture in the ducts is removed, preventing the formation of mold, which is not only a health hazard, but is very expensive to remove once it grows in the HVAC system. Second, it improves the efficiency of your HVAC system, which can save money on your power bills. Third, it helps improve indoor air quality by removing harmful pollutants. One other thing you can do is install high-efficiency air filters to ensure that a majority of the airborne contaminants in your home are eliminated.

Philadelphia Brain And Spinal Cord Injury Lawyer Discusses Dangerous Products

Philadelphia, 08/16/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Over the past few years, news headlines have been dominated by stories about links between brain injuries and professional athletes, with particular emphasis on football players. For a long time, the NFL denied the association, however, the league eventually started to accept the claims in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Now, a new report from one of the country’s leading medical publications, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), has stated that one of the largest studies ever published on the subject has found that 87 percent of football players studied in the NFL and other levels of play had some form of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Brain Injury and CTE: What Is It?

Brain injuries come in a variety of forms, from concussions to degenerative diseases like CTE. According to a Time report, CTE is associated with repetitive head trauma, such as the repeat blunt force and contact experienced by football players. Over time, blows to the head have been linked to dementia, suicidal behavior, and declines in memory and executive function. Unfortunately, CTE can only be diagnosed after an individual has passed away.

Brain Injuries Aren’t Limited to the NFL

However, previous studies have only looked at the brains of deceased NFL players. New studies are also finding these serious brain disorders and diseases in football players across all skill levels and all age groups. The new study that appears in JAMA looked at the brains of 202 deceased individuals who had played football from the high school level all the way up to the NFL.

Among the NFL players, 99 percent suffered from CTE. In the group overall, 87 percent had CTE. According to one of the researchers who published the study, “This study more than doubles the number of cases reported in the literature of CTE. It suggests, with a lot of caveats, that this is probably not a rare disease — at least among those who are exposed to a lot of football.”

Are Sports Safe?

The results of the study are shocking — and terrifying for parents of children involved in high school football and other sports. Understandably, many parents want to know if it’s safe for their child to participate in sports, and what schools are doing to ensure kids are safe on the field and on the courts. Parents also want to know if schools have policies in place to address brain injuries when they occur. Far too often, school districts adopt a “head in the sand” approach that leaves families with more questions than answers.

Philadelphia Brain & Spinal Cord Injury Attorney Discusses Dangerous Products

Rand Spear a Philadelphia brain and spinal cord injury lawyer states, “If your child has been injured while playing sports at school, you may not know where to turn. It’s normal for the school, the school’s athletic director, or district administrators to pressure parents to keep these types of incidents quiet. However, research shows that brain injuries from contact sports are not rare events. On the contrary, they are exceedingly common.”

Texas Truck Accident Lawyer Discusses “Truck Only” Lanes

Dallas, Texas, 08/16/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

If you live or work in a large city, you’ve probably seen “bicycle only” lanes or even lanes reserved specifically for buses or other types of public transport.

Now, the state of Georgia is considering designating certain traffic lanes as “truck only” lanes.

As one media report points out, this is a marked contrast to trucking safety solutions in countries like Australia, where the government has banned semi-trucks from using certain highway lanes.

If the proposed project is put into place, the state will construct two lanes designated for truck traffic only along Interstate 75. The project is estimated to cost $2 billion.

Project organizers say the lanes are needed, as the Port of Savannah is expected to grow significantly over the next few years, which will ramp up semi-truck traffic into and out of the port.

Will Truck Only Lanes Lead to “Truck Platooning” and Longer Combination Vehicles (LCVs)?

One possible area of concern the proposed “truck only” lanes raise is the possibility of the lanes leading to the introduction of so-called “truck platooning” or perhaps longer combination vehicles (LCVs).

“Truck platooning” is the practice of two or more semi-trucks driving in a tight line formation together. The lead truck typically handles navigation, with the trucks in the rear communicating at all times with the lead truck.

Proponents of truck platooning say it saves time, money, and emissions. Opponents say that trucks driving closely together have the potential to cause catastrophic accidents.

The truck only lanes could also prompt lawmakers to change the rules about LCVs. Instead of a truck platooning situation, where multiple trucks travel in a group, an LCV involves a single semi hauling multiple trailers — typically two, sometimes three.

Advocates for truck only lanes say the lanes could be a good solution for the truck driver shortage that has been making it difficult for carrier companies to find drivers for their trucks. They argue that opening up lanes for truck traffic makes it possible for trucks to platoon — or for truckers to drive LCVs — without worrying about maneuvering around other types vehicles on the road.

Texas Truck Accident Lawyer Discusses Truck Only Lanes

Leading Texas truck accident lawyer Amy Witherite states: “If the Georgia truck only lanes project proceeds, it will be the first of its kind in the United States. Because these types of lanes have never been tried in the U.S. before, it remains to be seen whether they will make the roads safer. Researchers will need to keep a close eye on the lanes to determine if they cut down on semi-truck accidents.”

If you’ve been injured in a semi-truck crash, or you have lost someone you love in a truck accident, compassionate and experienced legal help is available today. Contact a Texas truck accident lawyer right away to discuss your rights and options. Why Rising Air Pollution Will Kill You

Riverdale, NJ, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Rising air pollution levels throughout the world are not just an environmental concern. Scientists have known for decades about the link between worsening air pollution and an increase in the risks for heart disease, lung cancer, and reduced lung function. But it’s only recently that the link between air pollution levels and life expectancy has become more obvious. And that link is stronger in poorer countries, because of lower air pollution control standards, and the lack of sufficient health care to battle the illnesses caused by poor air quality. This is an issue that affects everyone because pollution is a problem in nearly every country in the world. Therefore, it is important to understand how pollution directly shortens lifespan, and how to improve outdoor air quality.

Also Read our blog on :  The Surprising Impact of Air Pollution on Exercise
Why Air Pollution Cuts Life Expectancy

The reason why air pollution cuts life expectancy is that the particles that are released into the air are very toxic.

According to News–Medical.Net, a new study by researchers in Denmark has found that, on average, an increase in pollution particles in the air of 10 micrograms per cubic meter cuts victims’ life expectancy by 9-11 years – more than previously thought.” (1)

The Denmark study used a sample of 100,000 people and their estimated mortality rates by age. Researchers then simulated the effects of long-term exposure to increased air pollution (of 10 micrograms of small particles per cubic meter) on mortality.

The study found that the average age of an air pollution victim is 78.9 years and their average loss of life expectancy is 9-11 years – much longer than a frequently cited estimate of 1-2 years.

The particles that were used to simulate the effects of long-term exposure to air pollution are commonly known as particulate matter (PM), and they are formed from emissions generated by vehicle exhaust, coal-burning factories, smokestacks, fires and construction activities.

Some forms of PM such as dirt, dust, and soot are visible to the naked eye, but others are very small and cannot be detected except under a microscope.

And it is these invisible pollutants, categorized as PM10 (particles 10 micrometers or smaller), PM2.5  (particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller) and PM1 (particles 1 micrometer or smaller) that pose the greatest health risks because they are easily inhaled and swallowed and can lodge in your lungs.

PM has also been linked to heart and lung disease, irregular heartbeat, decreased lung function, worsening of asthma symptoms, and difficulty breathing.

Given these realities, countries throughout the world are struggling to find ways to lower rising air pollution levels.

Reducing Emissions of Air Pollutants

Reducing emissions of air pollutants is a long and difficult process, but countries such as India have started taking steps to improve outdoor air quality.

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, India’s largest sources of rising air pollution are indoor cooking stoves, traffic congestion, and industrial factories and plants that burn fossil fuels. Another more intractable source of pollution is the common practice of burning waste in the open. (2)

To reduce emissions, the Indian government has initiated a clean air campaign that includes proposals to shift residents to clean energy sources (such as solar power) for indoor cooking stoves, public transport, and industrial processes.

Furthermore, the government is trying to lower vehicle emissions by increasing fuel taxes and parking fees and establishing no-car zones to encourage walking and bicycling.

“India is the perfect example of a country that is taking big steps to reduce its harmful emissions,” stated Kevin Wood, Camfil USA Vice President Sales & Marketing. “You have to go to the source of the air pollution problem and find ways to lower a number of contaminants that are generated. Improving air quality is a challenge, but it is not without real solutions.”

Protecting Yourself from Air Pollution

With rising air pollution becoming a problem across the globe, protecting yourself from air pollution is vital to your future health and perhaps even to your life expectancy.

To reduce your exposure to bad air, make a habit of checking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Air Quality Index, which gives you a daily measurement of harmful pollutants. That can help you limit your exposure to outdoor pollution, especially if you have asthma. You can also invest in air purifiers for your home or workplace to eliminate particles that are bad for your health. And finally, you can ensure that your HVAC system has high-efficiency air filters that can also trap many common pollutants before they can be inhaled or swallowed.

Camfil air products can be used to filter and clean the air in any indoor environment. Our products represent the very best in air filtration technology and innovation.

Federal Drug Trafficking Attorney Discusses Meth Trafficking

Dallas, TX, USA, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

There have been recent reports about a 16-year-old boy who died after US Customs and Border Protection agents told him to drink from a bottle containing liquid methamphetamine. The boy was crossing the border from Tijuana, Mexico to San Diego, when agents inspected his backpack and found two bottles of liquid they believed to be liquid methamphetamine. The boy told the agents it was apple juice. The agents challenged him to drink from a bottle if it was really apple juice. He did, and he went into convulsions and died shortly afterward, reports federal drug trafficking attorney John Helms.

So what is liquid methamphetamine (“meth”)?  When I was a federal prosecutor in Dallas, a lot of the meth cases we prosecuted involved local “meth labs” in which individual “meth cooks” made meth in houses or even mobile trailers using ingredients like cold tablets, matches, camera batteries, lye, and ammonia used in making fertilizer. Times have changed since then.

Now, most meth comes from “super labs” in Mexico that produce large quantities of meth that is cheaper and of higher quality than what local meth cooks make. In recent years, more and more of the meth coming from Mexico is in liquid form. It usually has a dull gold or amber color that looks somewhat like apple juice. The liquid meth is smuggled into the United States, converted into crystal or powder form locally, and then sold, adds Dallas drug defense lawyer Helms.

Smuggling meth in liquid form makes it easier to disguise. It can be put into bottles and disguised as a drink, like juice or tequila. Sometimes, liquid meth is put into large containers for antifreeze or other automotive liquids.

Vehicles crossing the border are sometimes inspected by x-ray or by pinging parts of the undercarriage with a hammer to see whether something is solid when it should not be. Both of these methods are good at detecting hidden compartments or solid masses that should not be where they are.

Liquid meth allows smugglers to hide the meth in places where liquid should be expected, like windshield wiper fluid containers and gas tanks. Smugglers sometimes modify gas tanks by partitioning them so that liquid meth is in one part, and gasoline is in the other. Since liquid meth is heavier than gasoline, it is also possible to fill the bottom of a gas tank with a liquid meth solution and have gasoline float on top. The vehicle then siphons off the gasoline from the top layer.

The laws against distributing liquid meth are no different from those against distributing crystal meth. The fact that someone is driving a car or truck with liquid meth hidden inside does not automatically mean that the person is guilty of distribution. The government still has to prove that the person was aware that they were transporting illegal drugs.

Sometimes, a person may be recruited to drive a vehicle across the border to someplace in the United States without knowing that it contains drugs hidden inside. After all, if the drugs are hidden to prevent law enforcement from finding them, then they may be hidden well enough so that the driver does not know about them.

Law enforcement has a lot of ways to find circumstantial evidence that a driver knew or had to know what they were doing. In defending people accused of transporting illegal drugs, it is important to know about the techniques used to recruit people, the techniques for hiding drugs, and how law enforcement tries to prove that the accused was aware of the drugs. Of course, it is also critical to look at the way the accused was stopped and how the drugs were found to determine whether law enforcement violated the Fourth Amendment rights of the accused against unreasonable searches and seizures.

As a former federal prosecutor and a criminal defense lawyer, I have seen the tactics of both drug distribution and law enforcement change over the years. I have also closely studied and applied changes in the law of searches and seizures.

Drug distribution is a very serious crime. It can result in very long prison sentences that may get even longer due to changes under the Trump Administration. Anyone accused of drug distribution should have an experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable drug defense lawyer to make sure that their rights are thoroughly protected.

If you or a family member have been charged with a federal drug crime or any other drug related crime in Dallas or the nearby counties and have any questions about drug laws, contact federal drug trafficking lawyer John Helms at 214-666-8010 or fill out this online contact form. We can talk about the situation, how the law could apply in your case and the best legal options to protect your rights and maintain your freedom.

1-800-CAR-WRECK® Reports Fatal Car Wrecks Are On the Rise And Here’s Why

Eberstein Witherite LLP 1800 Car Wreck Fort Worth, 08/15/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Fatal car wrecks continue to be a major problem in the U.S., and according to Fox News, an estimated 40,000 people died in car accidents in 2016, a six percent increase from 2015, and a 14 percent increase from 2014.

If these numbers hold, it would mean that 2016 was the deadliest in the U.S. since 2007. (1)

What makes theses figures even more concerning is that fatal car accidents increased 7.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, which was the highest percentage increase since 1966. And it is estimated that the total number of vehicle miles driven is also set to increase, pointing to one of the major causes of fatal accidents in the U.S.

These numbers should grab the attention of all drivers because without understanding the major contributing factors in these accidents, it will be impossible to implement strategies to lower car accident fatalities.

Fatal Car Accident Causes

The challenge of improving fatal accident rates was highlighted by a recent survey taken by the National Safety Council (NSC), which found that: (2)

83 percent of drivers believed driving presented safety issues
64 percent said they were comfortable driving above the speed limit
47 percent said they were comfortable texting manually or through voice activation
13 percent said they drove after smoking marijuana
10 percent said they drove after consuming too much alcohol

These attitudes make it difficult for motorists to change their dangerous behavior, even after learning that these behaviors are part of the fatal car accident causes that continue to make auto safety such a challenge.

“I think most drivers understand how some of their activities may contribute to car wrecks,” stated Amy Witherite, partner at the personal injury law firm of Eberstein Witherite, LLP. “But knowing how something elevates a risk does not mean that drivers will necessarily change long-standing behavior.”

In fact, the biggest fatal car accident causes of 2016 were very similar to the contributing factors that caused a majority of fatal car wrecks in 2015, including:

Speeding – more than a dozen states have increased speed limits on interstate highways during the past three years, contributing to the natural tendency of many drivers to exceed speed limits by five to 10 miles per hour.
Driver Distraction – this includes behavior such as texting while driving, using electronic devices such as a tablet while driving, eating, chatting with other passengers, applying makeup, and reaching for fallen objects on the floor.
Alcohol and Drug Impairment – significantly compromises reaction time, focus, concentration and a driver’s ability to make sound decisions.
Drowsy Driving – this can be caused by exhaustion, or by drivers who take prescription pills. Drowsy driving robs motorists of focus and reaction time and it can also cause a person’s eyes to close, which can have devastating consequences.

Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Also a Factor In Fatal Car Wrecks

In addition to these main causes, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified vehicles miles traveled (VMT) as another contributor.

VMT is calculated as the total annual vehicles miles traveled, divided by the total population in a state or in a country, and is expressed per 100 million miles traveled. (3)

A robust economy has lead to the creation of thousands of more trucking jobs, which has directly increased VMT figures. And has also created more discretionary income, spurring millions more Americans to take road-trip vacations, which also impacts VMT.

The more cars and trucks that are on the road, the greater the likelihood of more accidents, which is evidenced by the fact that VMT has increased steadily over the past few years.

What To Do After A Car Accident

While fatal car wrecks continue to rise, there are still thousands of accidents in which survivors must grapple with their change in circumstances.

There is no easy answer about what to do after a car accident, but one of the most important first steps is to talk to a reputable personal injury law firm, such as the team at 1-800-CAR-WRECK.

“I have been in car accidents before,” stated Amy Witherite, “So, I can put myself in the shoes of my clients who have suffered injuries in these wrecks. And I know from my own experience, that I needed someone else to handle the little and big things for me because my life came to a complete stop. That’s why our team is so focused on keeping your life running after a wreck.”
