Choosing The Best Inpatient Fentanyl Addiction Rehab

New Jersey, 10/23/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The opioid epidemic is rampant in all parts of the country; there is no demographic that is not affected by it. More and more people are dying from overdoses of heroin and prescription painkillers like fentanyl. According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most recent dramatic increase follows the pattern that has been going on since 1999 when prescription opioids became ubiquitous in the United States. In the last 16 years, there have been nearly 200,000 deaths caused by overdoses related to prescription opioids, and deaths associated specifically with the drug fentanyl, are definitely on the rise.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is an opioid painkiller that is similar to other opioids like morphine, OxyContin, and even heroin, but it is much more powerful. It is typically used during and following surgery for pain relief, or for the severe breakthrough pain associated with cancer. It has a shorter half-life than other pain medications, working by inhibiting the pain pathways to the brain from the location of the pain. It isn’t like over-the-counter pain medications or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which generally affect the peripheral or local site of pain.

Fentanyl is administered in various ways including as an intravenous injection, a patch that is placed on the skin, a tablet that is dissolved between the cheek and gums, a lollipop or lozenge, and as a mouth spray.

Fentanyl is Dangerous and Addictive when Abused

Fentanyl has a high potential for abuse due to the euphoric effects and pleasurable sedation that it causes. It is commonly abused when users attempt to numb the emotional pain with a rush of pleasure and a high feeling. Continued use causes the opioid receptors in the brain to crave repeated use.

When a person begins abusing fentanyl, they will become increasingly tolerant to the drug. That means that they will need to take more and more of it to get the same effect. Additionally, they will begin to feel withdrawal symptoms if they decrease or stop taking fentanyl. Because of these two factors, fentanyl abuse can cause a person to escalate from wanting the drug to needing it to feel normal very quickly.

Fentanyl is very powerful – about 100 times more potent than morphine – and it can greatly depress breathing. Overdoses that result from fentanyl are caused by respiratory failure. Research shows that women are more likely than men to become addicted to fentanyl because they are more likely to be diagnosed with chronic pain and prescribed the medication and end up taking it longer than it was originally prescribed. Adolescents and young adults are also among the highest fentanyl abusers, typically getting access to the medication from friends or relatives.

Many people who become addicted to fentanyl do so innocently when they are prescribed the medication for a legitimate reason. Unfortunately, due to the highly addictive nature of the drug, they start using more and quickly become dependent on it. When the high that is achieved with fentanyl becomes a daily occurrence, it’s important to watch for possible signs and symptoms of fentanyl abuse and addiction.

Signs and Symptoms of Fentanyl Addiction

Building up a tolerance to fentanyl is one of the first signs of addiction, as is suffering withdrawal sickness when the drug is stopped or doses are decreased. Some of the other, outward, signs of addiction are:

Extreme euphoria and relaxation

Sense of well-being

Dizziness and confusion

Lightheadedness

Drowsiness or sedation

Upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting

Constipation

Drug-seeking behavior, or doctor shopping

Irritability

Decline in activity

Problems sleeping

Increasing conflicts in relationships

Reporting pain medication prescriptions as lost or stolen

Frequent early renewal requests from pharmacists

Increasing complaints of pain

Reluctance to try non-opioid pain medications for pain

Requesting other prescriptions for medications with euphoric effects

Respiratory arrest

It can sometimes be challenging to identify a loved one’s behavior as fentanyl abuse, but if there are several of the above signs and symptoms present, it may indicate that abuse is occurring.

How Long Does Fentanyl Stay in the Body?

This question’s answer has many factors involved. How long it takes for the body to rid itself of fentanyl depends on:

Amount of fentanyl taken

How the fentanyl was administered (patch, injection, lozenges, etc.)

Length of time fentanyl has been used

Genetic makeup of the user

Overall health of the user

History of drug use of the user

If fentanyl is used intravenously, it will be out of the system faster than if it’s used in the patch or lozenge forms. IV fentanyl is usually out of the body within 24 hours, depending on the other factors. Other methods of administration can take up to about two days for the body to get rid of fentanyl. However, that doesn’t mean that the withdrawal symptoms will be gone that quickly. Those can last much longer as the body works to recalibrate itself without fentanyl in its system.

What is Detox from Fentanyl Like?

Like any other opioid, the detox from fentanyl is not comfortable or pleasant. It is also not always safe to do without medical supervision. The effects of withdrawal typically begin within about 24 hours from the last use and the symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable. Some of the withdrawal symptoms are:

Chills and fever

Severe nausea and vomiting

Stomach cramping

Sweating

Trouble sleeping

Body aches

Anxiety and panic attacks

Irritability

It’s recommended that detox from fentanyl is done in a medically-supervised detox facility. Not only is it safer should symptoms become severe, it can also be much more comfortable as there are medications that can be given to help manage the symptoms.

Finding the Best Inpatient Rehab for Fentanyl Addiction

Choosing a rehabilitation facility for fentanyl addiction treatment should be done with the same careful consideration that you use to choose a doctor or a hospital. When you choose the right rehab facility, it makes all the difference in the whole process. Here are some important considerations to look at when choosing an inpatient rehab for fentanyl addiction:

Reputation. To find out the reputation that a rehab facility has, it takes some research. You can easily do some online searches to see what former clients and their families have to say about the facility. It’s important that you find a facility that has a good reputation with both patients and medical professionals. When you find one whose reputation you are happy with, and that has a track-record of satisfied patients who are in long-term recovery, it should make your short list of choices.

Respect. Every patient (regardless of whether they are treated in a hospital for an illness, or in a rehab facility for an addiction) should be treated with respect and should have a say in what their treatment is and how it is administered. That means that your wishes should be carefully considered by the facility staff. For example, if you would like to detox without the use of prescription medication, that desire should be evaluated by your doctor and if it is medically feasible and safe, it should be carried out.

Location. Where the facility is located is worth taking the time to consider. Is it close enough to home that your friends and family can come visit you? Is it in a safe area where you will feel at ease? Is the aesthetics of the surrounding area important to you? The more calm, relaxing, and secure it is, the lower your stress and anxiety will be.

Qualifications of medical professionals. All of the medical staff at the facility you choose should be encouraging, professional, and have the proper credentials. When you take a tour of the facility, don’t be afraid to ask about the qualifications of the doctors, nurses, therapists, and other staff. They should be willing to answer all of your questions without hesitation.

Comfort. Whatever your decision is about the rehab you go to, the facility, program, and staff should be tailored to the needs of people needing treatment for fentanyl addiction. That means that in addition to monitoring withdrawal symptoms, the facility should provide such things as nutritious meals, 24/7 support, and complementary therapies. Patients should be comfortable in private, or semi-private rooms. Also in the area of comfort, patients should feel comfortable with and welcomed by the staff.

Use of medications. There are some specific medications that can be used in detox to make patients more comfortable, and withdrawal symptoms more manageable. For example, buprenorphine is often used for withdrawal from opioid drugs like fentanyl. Other medications may also be used such as anti-nausea medication and over-the-counter pain relievers. Many people who seek help for fentanyl addiction are also diagnosed with co-occurring mental disorders or illnesses like depression or posttraumatic stress disorder. Those patients may be prescribed medication to help with those conditions. Make sure that the facility you choose adheres to the use of medication philosophy that you subscribe to.

Payment options. One of the most common reasons that people with addiction problems don’t seek help is the cost of treatment. However, most rehab facilities do accept insurance and in many instances, insurance does cover at least a portion of the cost. Be sure to see if the facility you are interested in accepts your insurance. You can also check to see if they will accept payment plans for the balance that insurance doesn’t cover, so you don’t have to come up with a large sum of money all at once.

Realistic promises. There is no quick fix of addiction. Detox and rehab facilities that promise a “cure” or a “full recovery” from addiction should be avoided like the plague. Likewise, detox centers that offer “rapid detox” should also be considered suspect. The rehabilitation process should not be rushed, and the process should focus on true recovery and that takes time. The program should enlist evidence-based treatments and integrate the potential for relapse over the course of recovery.

Recovery for Fentanyl Addiction is Possible

Fentanyl addiction is treatable and it is possible to recover from it. Inpatient rehabilitation is typically recommended over outpatient treatment for fentanyl addiction, and ongoing and consistent treatment of some kind is often necessary for fentanyl addictions.

If you or a loved one are using fentanyl and have overdosed or you are concerned that you may be addicted, seek help now to begin recovering. The first step to recovery is asking for help.

Bicycle Accident Lawyer Explains The High Costs Of Bicycle Accident Injuries

New York City, NY, 10/23/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise to hear that New York City has some of the highest rates of bicycle ridership in the country. In a city famous for its heavy traffic, getting around on two wheels instead of four is often much faster and less expensive. According to the New York City Department of Transportation, 34 percent of New Yorkers ride a bicycle a few times a year, and nearly 50 percent report riding a bike “at least several times a month.”

Unfortunately, the rise in the number of bicyclists is a factor in the jump in bicycle accident injuries and fatalities. In a study published in the journal Injury Prevention, researchers from the University of California San Francisco found that there were 3.8 million non-fatal and nearly 10,000 fatal bicycle accidents in the U.S. between 1997 and 2013. The total number of deaths increased from 588 in 1999 to 855 fatalities in 2013.

Medical Costs Associated with Bicycle Accidents on the Rise

In addition to more riders and more bicycle accidents, the medical costs associated with these crashes has also gone up. According to a Business Insider report, “over the last two decades, the number of people injured in bicycle accidents in the U.S. has been rising and the cost of each crash has also gone up.”

The report cites the Injury Prevention study, stating that researchers used data gathered from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and fatal crash data from the National Vital Statistics System.

The total costs for bicycle injuries are staggering. For the bicycle injuries that occurred in the period between 1997 and 2013, the cost was $209 billion for non-fatal injuries. For fatal injuries, the economic cost was $28 billion. For each year of the study, non-fatal bicycle injuries increased by around 6,500, with total medical costs going up an average of $789 million each year. This is an increase of 140 percent over the course of the years included in the study.

What Bicyclists Can Do to Stay Safe

According to Morteza Asgarzadeh, a researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, there are several things bicyclists can do to stay safer when they ride.

Be well-informed about the risks of bicycling.

Use bicycle-specific infrastructure when possible.

Always be vigilant about watching for drivers on the road.

Give drivers room on the road.

Wear a bicycle helmet.

Asgarzadeh also says that cities can do their part by increasing lighting on roads and bicycle paths, as well as investing in infrastructure that promotes safe bicycling. Dr. Benjamin Breyer, one of the authors of the Injury Prevention study, stated that infrastructure is actually more affordable than paying for the cost of bicycle-related injuries. “In fact, we could build cycling infrastructure in one-sixth of the entire U.S. for the same cost of all these injuries in 10 years.”

Online Solicitation Of A Minor In Texas

Dallas, Texas, 10/23/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Using the internet to arrange or ask for sex or sexual contact with an underage individual is a serious crime under both federal law and Texas state law. Many people view the internet as a sort of Wild Wild West, in which the rules are lax and no one really polices conversations or exchanges.

This is incorrect. In fact, law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels actively monitor what occurs online. Furthermore, you don’t have to actually make physical contact with a minor or even meet a minor in person to be charged with solicitation.

Police Stings for Online Solicitation of a Minor in Texas

Media reports state that police in Texas have been very active in targeting online predators and setting up sting operations designed to catch individuals who attempt to solicit sex or sexual contact with children over the internet.

One report states that police in the Houston area arrested 13 people in a sting called “Operation Broken Heart.” The operation took place over two months between April and May. During the operation, police posed as underage individuals and interacted with men who sought to connect with minors using social media and other internet communication. In total, police arrested 13 men between the ages of 19 and 66. Three of the men arrested were also charged with possession, promotion, or distribution of child pornography.

In a separate operation, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office made at least 15 arrests in child sex stings between December 2016 and April 2017.

In 2015, police departments from Missouri City, Fort Bend County, Katy, and Sugar Land arrested 23 men in connection with a sting involving the online solicitation of minors. In several of the cases, police also found weapons and illegal substances in the men’s vehicles.

Serious Penalties for Online Solicitation of a Minor

Online solicitation of a minor carries serious penalties at both the federal and state level. Under federal statutes, a person convicted of online solicitation of a minor can be sentenced to life in prison under certain circumstances. At a minimum, an individual convicted of federal online solicitation of a minor can expect to spend 10 years in prison. These are felony convictions that stay on your criminal record forever.

Under Texas state law, it’s a felony to use the internet to solicit sex with a minor. The crime can be charged as a second- or third-degree felony depending on the circumstances of the case. If an individual is convicted of a second-degree felony, the prison sentence ranges between two and 20 years. Conviction of a third-degree felony carries a sentence of two and 10 years.

What’s The Link Between Indoor Air Quality And How Smart You Are

Riverdale, NJ, 10/20/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

For years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has sounded the alarm about the importance of improving indoor air quality, because people spend as much as 90 percent of their lives indoors. And in fact, studies have found that residences and workplaces with high levels of pollutants can worsen asthma conditions, reduce lung function and even lead to serious illnesses such as lung cancer.

Learn About Cities with the Worst Air Pollution in the U.S.

Let’s take a look at the link between indoor air quality and cognitive function, and see how improving air quality may not just make us healthier, it may actually make us smarter.

Pollution Affects Cognitive Function

We know that exposure to pollution has a direct and often adverse effect on our health, but recent studies have begun to show that pollution affects cognitive function in human beings.

According to Alternet, a Harvard study found that normal indoor levels of carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds [VOCs] negatively impact human cognitive function and decision-making. (1)

The study analyzed 24 participants who spent six, eight-hour days working in a controlled office environment.

During the study, some of the participants were exposed to high concentrations of VOCs, while others were exposed to low concentrations of VOCs.

At the end of the eight-hour day, the participants were given a 90-minute computerized cognitive assessment that measured their aptitude in nine functions, including crisis response, information usage, strategy and task orientation.

Participants who spent their day in the environment with a low concentration of VOCs scored 61 percent higher than the participants who spent their day in the environment with high concentrations of VOCs.

In addition to finding that carbon dioxide and VOCs negatively affect worker performance, the study also found that when the environment with high VOCs was exposed to increased ventilation, the cognitive function of participants working in that environment improved.

These results are in line with another major study, which found that air pollution affects brain function in primary school children.

Researchers analyzed cognitive function in 2,715 primary school students and found that children in schools with high levels of pollution scored lower on cognitive tests that included working memory, superior working memory, and attentiveness. (2)

Common Air Pollution Ailments You Need To Know
Reasons Pollution May Impact Brain Activity

But what are some of the reasons pollution may impact brain activity?

According to Science, the answer may lie in a series of studies conducted by a pair of neuroscientists at the University of Southern California (USC), who exposed mice to dirty air.

The results showed that microscopic pollutants could travel into the cerebellum at the rear of the brain and trigger an inflammatory reaction. (3)

Scientists theorize that this inflammation could interfere with cognitive function, and prolonged exposure could even accelerate mental health illnesses such as Alzheimer’s.

While more research is needed to determine the exact reasons why pollution affects the brain, it’s clear that poor indoor air quality can definitely impact human cognitive ability.

Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Given the dangers of pollution, it is important to find ways to improve indoor air quality. One action that some employers are taking is to convert their offices into green buildings.

The EPA defines the green building as increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use and harvest energy, water and materials…and protecting and restoring human health and the environment through design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction.

But even at home, you can take steps to ensure that you breathe cleaner air, such as opening your windows to lower carbon dioxide levels and to ensure that fresh air blows in from outdoors.

The type of air filters used in your building to remove contaminants can also have a major effect on the indoor air quality. Air filters are available to remove both particulate and gaseous pollutants.

You should also limit the use of indoor barbecue grills and indoor wood-burning fireplaces, and use a dehumidifier to keep the humidity level below 50 percent because excess moisture creates bacteria and mold.

“We know that indoor air quality is a vital aspect of overall health,” Kevin Wood, Camfil USA Vice President Sales & Marketing. “But the issue is even more urgent now that we understand some of the cognitive problems that arise due to long-term exposure to pollutants. The HVAC systems within a residence or commercial facility are the keys to improving indoor air quality. Proper ventilation can help reduce pollution and installing high-efficiency air filters rated to eliminate 99.97 percent of contaminants, can help protect your long-term health and mental well-being.”

Boca Personal Injury Lawyer On Johnson&Johnson $417 Million Powder Cancer Award

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 10/20/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

The link between baby powder and cancer has been in the news in recent years. In August 2017, a California jury awarded a woman $417 million in a personal injury lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. The jury’s award includes $70 million in compensatory damages and $347 million in punitive damages. Juries and judges award punitive (punishment) damages in cases where they want to send a message to companies and other defendants about wrongdoing.

Does Baby Powder Cause Cancer?

In the California case, the plaintiff was a 63-year-old woman who said she used baby powder as part of her feminine hygiene routine since she was 11 years old. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007. She also claimed she stopped using the baby powder in 2016 after hearing stories of women who had suffered ovarian cancer in connection with talcum or baby powder. The woman said she would have stopped using baby powder for that purpose if there had been a warning label on the bottle.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), baby powder is classified as a cosmetic, which means it does not have to undergo the type of FDA review required for pharmaceuticals. As CNN reports, “Some other talc-based powders on the market carry labels that mention possible risk of ovarian cancer after frequent application in the female genital area.”

The International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization, has conducted studies on baby powder and found it to be “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

5,500 Baby Powder Cancer Claims

The $417 million verdict is not the first of its kind—nor is it the first time Johnson & Johnson has faced a lawsuit related to cancer and baby powder. As Bloomberg reports, there are currently over 5,500 cases on this issue pending against Johnson & Johnson across the country. Bloomberg also reports that the company has lost four previous jury verdicts totaling $300 million.

Court records show that the Cancer Prevention Coalition put Johnson & Johnson on notice as early as 1994 that baby powder poses “a serious risk of ovarian cancer.” Evidence also shows that a Johnson & Johnson medical consultant circulated an internal memo in 1997 stating that “anybody who denies” the link between baby powder and ovarian cancer is “denying the obvious in the face of all evidence to the contrary.”

Boca Personal Injury Lawyer Discusses Cancer Risks in Products

Boca personal injury lawyer Joe Osborne explains, “Manufacturers of products have an obligation to warn consumers of known risks associated with using their products. Chances are, most Americans have used at least one Johnson & Johnson product in their home. No one should have to worry that their personal hygiene products can make them seriously ill.”

The Evolution Of Marijuana – NJ Addiction Rehab To Host Lunch & Discussion

New Jersey, 10/20/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Summit Behavioral Health will host a lunch and discussion session for professional counselors titled, “Drug Trends: The Evolution of Marijuana” on Friday, November 10 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Summit Outpatient facility at 4065 Quakerbridge Road, West Windsor Township in New Jersey.

The session will explore how the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana will affect counselors now that much of the stigma of using the drug is no longer a factor. Some counselors are concerned that public perception of marijuana as a dangerous drug has changed because of the prevalence of medical marijuana facilities in many states.

Paul Lavella Jr., Director of Alumni Services at Summit Behavioral Health will lead the discussion. Lavella Jr. has a Master’s Degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology and is licensed as a Professional Counselor and Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He interacts daily with teenagers, adults, and families impacted by addiction, and is focused on helping them through the long process of recovery.

“The big challenge for professional counselors is convincing marijuana users that long-term smoking of the drug has damaging physical and psychological consequences,” Lavella Jr. stated. “Marijuana use has gone mainstream, so in states where recreational use is legal, counselors may face more resistance from people who don’t see anything wrong with smoking marijuana.”

But the debate about the legalization of marijuana is not one-sided, as some counselors believe that legal status of the drug will not impact the number of people who will seek treatment to help them stop smoking marijuana. As an example, they cite the fact that the legality of drinking alcohol has not stopped people who drink to excess from seeking to counsel.

“That’s why we are having this session,” Lavella Jr. added. “There are many sides to this debate, but there’s no doubt that public perception of marijuana use has changed over the past few years. We want to explore how that affects our role as counselors, and whether or not we will face more resistance with patients, and whether or not legalization will cause more people to seek treatment. It’s time we get up to speed on this current trend.”

Seating is limited, so anyone interested in attending the discussion should contact Jayme Poalise at (609) 471-7922, or send an email to rsvppj@summithelps.com.

Florida Car Accident Lawyer – Do’s And Don’ts Following A Car Accident

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 10/20/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Boca car accident lawyer, Joe Osborne, recently shared advice about what drivers should and shouldn’t do when they have been involved in a car accident.

What Should You Do After a Car Accident?

1. DO seek medical attention. If there are serious injuries, to you or a passenger, call 911 immediately. Don’t be afraid to allow an ambulance to take you to the hospital. If you do not have serious injuries that require immediate attention, you should still see your doctor as soon as possible.

2. DO contact the police. Even when a car accident isn’t serious, you should still call the police, wait until they arrive, and get a police report. Otherwise, if a claim is filed, it will be your word against the other driver’s.

3. DO gather evidence at the scene. If you are not seriously injured, take photographs of the accident scene and the damage to your vehicle immediately. Document the names, contact information, and statements of anyone who saw the accident.

4. DO report the accident to your insurance company. You are required to let your insurance company know when you are in a car accident. However, you are not required to go over every minute detail. Give them only the facts about the accident. The more information that you provide the insurance company, the more chances there are for the insurer to deny or decrease your claim.

5. DO hire a personal injury attorney. The insurance company will likely tell you that an attorney is not necessary, that you and the insurer can handle the claim. In reality, when individuals try to handle it on their own, they don’t receive as much compensation as they do when they hire a car accident attorney.

What Shouldn’t You Do After a Car Accident?

1. Don’t let the other car drive away. Not everyone is honest, so you need to make sure that the other driver is there when the police arrive so you know that they are providing accurate information.

2. Don’t assume that your injuries are minor. You may not feel the complete extent of your injuries for days or even weeks after the accident, so don’t downplay them or be afraid to seek medical attention.

3. Don’t accept a quick settlement from an insurance company. It takes longer than a couple of days or weeks to fully understand the scope of your injuries. If you accept a quick settlement from the insurance company, you will not be able to collect further compensation should your injuries cause you more medical expenses.

Store Here Completes Transaction Of 27 Properties Across 6 States

Orange, CA, USA, 10/20/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Store Here, LLC, a joint venture between certain affiliates of Westport Capital Partners LLC (“Westport”) and Store Here Management LLC, has sold 27 assets in Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Indiana, Kansas and Texas.

“In less than three years, we were able to execute a bold plan. We believed we could assemble a well-positioned portfolio of properties with high value upside; I am also so proud of all the hard work our team has put into creating our world-class owner/operator platform. Working alongside Westport Capital Partners, we applied our seasoned storage experience and have proven to be a viable force in the industry.” said James J. Hanrahan, Acquisitions Director of RHW Capital Management Group, LLC.

“Because of the nature of the fragmented market, we felt taking the programmatic approach to acquiring a portfolio was the best route for our platform. Partnering with Store Here Management for our entry into the self storage industry proved to be a great partnership and one we look forward to continuing,” said Sean Armstrong, Principal at Westport.

“The sale is the culmination of hard work and belief in a vision that the market would have a strong appetite for our portfolio,” said Russel Bernard, Managing Principal of Westport. Starting in March 2014 with an acquisition in San Antonio Texas and finishing in March 2017 with a transaction in Shreveport Louisiana, the venture created a group of quality assets with over 1.6 million rentable square feet and over 12,000 storage units.

What If My Child Is Injured At A Friend’s House?

Boca Raton, FL, USA, 10/18/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare — getting a phone call informing you that your child has been injured in an accident. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unintentional injury is the leading cause of death and serious injury among children between birth and age 19. Each year, over 12,000 children die due to accidental injuries, and more than 9.2 million are seen in emergency rooms for non-fatal injuries.

After a child is hurt, many parents don’t know where to turn for help. Obviously, the first priority is always getting immediate medical attention. Once your child has been treated, the next step is speaking to an experienced personal injury lawyer about your legal rights. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Always Report the Injury

When a child is injured at a friend’s house or relative’s home, parents sometimes hesitate to report the incident. Understandably, they don’t want to strain relationships with close friends or loved ones. However, failing to report the injury can hurt a personal injury case down the road. The defense counsel, who is usually hired by an insurance company, will invariably argue that the delay between the incident and reporting the incident means the child could have sustained an injury during the gap between the accident and the report.

You should also avoid reaching any kind of informal agreement or “settlement” with the homeowner. If you accept compensation from the homeowner, it could prevent you from being awarded money in a personal injury case. Although you may be reluctant to report the incident, you never know how much an injury will cost over time. Keep in mind that homeowners insurance exists for a reason. If you end up having to file a lawsuit against the homeowner, the insurance company will take over and defend it. This means you won’t be forced to go to court against a friend or relative.

Homeowners Insurance Will Probably Cover the Injury

Many people worry that reporting an injury at a friend’s house or relative’s home will burden that person with debt. However, the majority of homeowners have an insurance policy that protects them in the event of an injury on their property. If you receive a settlement, the money won’t come out of your loved one’s pocket. Just as with motor vehicle insurance, homeowners insurance covers people against lawsuits brought about by negligence.

Boca Raton Personal Injury Lawyer Discusses Kids and Injuries

Boca Raton personal injury lawyer Joe Osborne explains, “If your child is injured at school, it’s especially important to contact a personal injury lawyer right away. Because most schools are public entities, you may be required to file a formal notice of your intent to sue. In most cases, the time window for serving this notice is very short. Don’t miss your chance to get the compensation you deserve because you waited too long.”
