Q: What key mistake(s) do you think most new family travel hackers tend to make?

“Getting in over their heads with the credit card game and not being able to make the purchase requirements in order to get the travel rewards or not being able to pay off their credit cards every month and bleeding money away on interest. Failing to purchase the appropriate amount of travel insurance prior to their trips to cover things like lost and stolen luggage and medical expenses that can get very expensive.”

Q: After successfully planning and going on countless trips with your family, what would you consider the biggest family travel budgeting mistakes that others can learn from?

“Not planning for extra unexpected expenses in the budget like parking at hotels (which can get very expensive in big cities), tolls on road trips (we spent over $200 in tolls in 24 hours in Japan), hidden added costs to car rental agreements (like extra insurance in Costa Rica which was required but not included in our original price that almost doubled our car rental price for the week).

Become loyal to the chain and join the hotel’s reward program to earn perks like free breakfast, free parking, free room upgrades, access to lounges, etc. We love staying at Hyatt properties because our Hyatt Globalist status always gets us so many fantastic freebies that save us tons of money. With our Hyatt credit cards (one for each of us), we earn reward nights for free hotel stays to make the savings go further. “

” Park Hyatt Maldives, which we’ve visited twice and have saved over $35,000 by using Hyatt points and reward nights “

Q: What’s your secret to making the extraordinary process to pulling off transcontinental vacations with two younger children.

“To successfully travel hack as a family of 4, we have to plan long in advance and be flexible. Flying across the world with young kids is so much easier when you’re flying in premium cabins and everyone can get decent sleep. Then we hit the ground running and exploring and wear the kids out for bedtime. “
